Great photo and episode Steve!

The only thing that bothered me a bit was about the PS 3 Hub (the PS 3's online, though I doubt that name is real), is that a Sony CEO (I think it was a CEO) has said they have been working on the PS 3's online since they finished the PS 2's, meaning what, four, five years?

don't stop the reviews !!!
if you don't have time to do it, maybe you can ask somebody else to do the reviews for you.
you still select the game and do the basic review but let another person do the extended reviews/previews

I like the podcast, especially the news section (including the financial - business and so)
but I do miss a bit more previews-reviews and retroreviews.

My opinion about reviews and your show.

I've been listening since episode 2 so ive been a longtime fan. Back then i could deal with a super long show because there weren't many choices. But now with TOO MANY other gaming shows then i quit listening from start to finish due to time and lack of interest.

Here's my Gaming Steve schedule:
- Open show notes and look at whats happening
- Skip theme song (it grew on me a little but its too long)
- Listen to news section (roughly 30 minutes)
- Skip review. Even if its something interesting its just way too long for audio.
- Skip Spore talk. I care but not as much as everyone else.
- Skip retro review. I try to listen to these but again. You know what, its just way too long and redundant.
- Skip name that game. The prizes don't interest me so i don't bother.
- Listen to your mailbag (roughly 30 minutes)

Its a good show and blah blah blah, but if you want my opinion on how you can shorten it then here it is. Focus on your strongpoints. No offense, but your reviews aren't very compelling since you tend to go on and on. Where your real talents lay is your insider perspective on the industry and your dedication to help people. Getting the news can be done anywhere, but getting the news with a brilliant opinion can only be found here. Same with emails. You really do a great job with answering questions so thats a major draw to your show. Your reviews and everything else is just fluff and if you occassionally needed to cut it out then it wouldnt be missed by many people.

Anyway, hope you dont take offense to anything. I really appreciate the timestamping because without it then i probably wouldve cancelled and missed out on the great info you provide.

I have no problem with your feedback ... I did ask for it! ;D

It is tricky as I realize that many people really love the News and the email questions, so often those two sections are by far the longest (usually well more than an hour long just for those two segments). The review, sporetalk, and retro-review are usually no longer than 15-20 minutes long at most.

On the other hand, I know people who just love the retro-reviews and sporetalk and don't listen to the other sections. Hence, I try to put a little bit of everything in and allow the people the option to skip around. I figure it's a bit easier to do this rather than take out entire sections.

Also, something interesting I have been noticing is that many of the "other" gaming podcasts are starting to get longer and longer! I have been talking to some of them and THEY get emails all the time saying that they should make their podcasts longer, and they're starting to listen as they add more content to their podcasts. Strange how that is all coming full circle.

But thanks for the feedback. Anyone else have some?

I agree that you should focus on your strong points (althogh i disagree with the notion that you should shorten the podcast).
Your really strong points in my eyes:
  • News: you give us news other sites/podcasts don't give (like games selling in japan, financial info, etc.)
  • Your personal opinion on games: this applies to both review and retroreview: all the hard facts can be read on the bazillion other sites on the net; what makes these sections worth to listen is the background info and your personal view on the game. Shorten the part where you introduce the game and go right to the part where you tell us what you like and don't like
  • final thoughts: this point is mostly a copy of the last point: your view of the world is interesting.

Keep up the great work !

Pfeh I think you should leave them in, I believe people are capable enough to just browse trough your time stamps you very conveniently deliver with the posting of the new podcast.
You just can select from what it says there and only listen that, simple.

By what you said steve, its all a matter of how long it takes YOU to do the show. Again your time is much much appreciated by all of us, and as you said everyone has their own parts they like/love.

-I love the opening song and intro songs. I dont know how hard it is for you to get together with the guy who does the tag lines, but theyre great.
-Everyone should love the news section, please keep doing it, it's your best part. If anything, add a few more articles per week ;D.
Now it comes down to the tough stuff.
-Skip spore talk, maybe do it once every few weeks to a month. Maybe designate a couple of spore holidays each month, where you compile good questions/ideas. That way it will feel a bit more fresh, and you can spend time polishing this part. Not saying it needs to be polished right now, but you know what I mean.
-Keep the previews, maybe keep them a bit shorter, 5-10 minutes or so is good, depends whats coming out, I suppose. A good, long preview can always sub in for a review, in my opinion, if its something big. If thats the case, cut the review off to save some time.
-Keep the reviews/interviews. NOTE: what Alphager said in his post about your opinions. I very much agree.
-Skip the retro review, theyre fun, but if i had to choose to cut something totally, itd be this.
-Keep the mailbag, but keep it short and sweet every week.
-Name that game is always fun,and only takes a few minutes, no need to even consider cutting it
-Your final thought is just that, no way to cut this. Theyre always interesting anyways.

That's what my opinions/ideas are, thanks steve.

Noooo! Keep the retro reviews whatever you do. How else are we young'uns goignto learn about important games in video gaming history. If you need to cut something (not that I think you should) then cut the mail :P.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

I love the podcasts how they are, they're perfect. If you do end up making changes to shorten time spent, I guess you could try leaving out the review every week (since it takes you the most time to prepare and cover, right?), maybe a monthly review in its place... if needs be.

Being that your podcasts are pretty much why I'm here and staying, I can't complain really. I also can't compare like so many on this forum have, I really don't even bother with podcasts, until well now, so you must be doing something right. I was a bit shocked when I listened to the 2 hour long podcast, but it was something completely different to me and it filled my head with ideas. You're doing a great job and I'll probably be around for a while.

Oh, one small suggestion is the possibility of slicing up the podcast into small 'pieces', mostly for people with slower connections, ~50 mbs is a pretty scary download for them. I don't have the problem, but a friend I tried to get to download refused based purely upon the size of the file. Silly I know, but I remember having a slower connection and having similar habits of avoiding files that were even somewhat large as it cut down on what else I could do on the net during that time.

Well... how about this...

Keep the Podcasts the same length, people can skip around when they want to and you aren't forcing them to listen to all of it.

But this does not solve your problem with the Podcast taking up your time. So how about you take breaks? I am sure none of us will mind if you stop recording for a while so you can go and do something, and then plop one of your transitions over the spot where you stopped recording. We probably would never even notice.

That way everyone gets what they want, and you don't have to kill yourself every week.

Thats what I would do.

When you talk about popular MMORPGs on your Podcasts, when you said Lineage, did you mean Lineage II? I thought that game had a horrible grind and when you died you lost like 11% of your exp moving tword your next lvl. That was not a casual game. WOW is more casual, but lineage II is basicaly a treadmill lvl grind game.
