You know come to think of it... I've never really given Gamecube a chance. I should get it again and try it out. :)

how come xbox and gamecube both have refernces to rectangles in their names...very original.  and the only reason i think gamecube isn't as popular is because it releases the SAME games for every one of its systems.  it's either mario, pokemon, kirby, zelda, metroid, sonic, etc.  there probably are some awesome titles for it but it just seems like a "kiddie" console compared to all the adult-themed games out for other consoles.

and i have to say the best system has to be the playstation 2.  it's not a huge CUBE or BOX especially since they released the new slim version (my pride and joy).  i like it alot because it has backwards compatibility with my ps1 games (and ps1 was the first console game out so i have quite a few games for it).  who knows, maybe if gamecube could play some of my sega or nes games i would buy it.  you can connect online quick, easy, and for free (you don't have to subscribe a service like xbox).  and the controls are awesome, most of the games on the n64 only used about 2-4 buttons and the controllers had about 9+ buttons on them.  and again, it just has most of the popular titles on it.

I'm gonna say that PS2 is the best of the consoles right now because of its huge gaming library, which is sort of what solidmetal said. It has all the good games for PS2 (ignore the massive volume of crappy games. go to Gamestop and you'll see that GC and X-BOX title libraries are getting filled with crap now too), and all the good games for PS1. Like Einhander. :D

I say that different consoles are different seas and that you need to sail in one that floats your boat. <_<

First of all, I think the whole thing about getting Wind Waker with new Zelda graphics is a joke... apparently it was in the april issue of the magazine (april-foolsing bastards :D) though I personally love the style.

It seems like each console has it's own niche. The gamecube's all about interesting gameplay dynamics. Pikmin, Mario Kart, Crystal Chronicles and 4 Swords are all based on origional gaming mechanics, love 'em or hate 'em. I tend to think of the Gamecube as the most progressive system, while still maintaining an artform that's the most accessible to all groups of people.

The Xbox packs the most hardware, and is the most capable system. I'd actually argue that the PS2 is the weakest of the three because, while it has lots of enjoyable titles, i can't think of any games that really tried to push the concepts of what makes a game a game (except maybe for Ico, which I absolutely loved).

Ultimately the Gamecube seems like the most social of the systems, so if you play a lot by yourself or are a hardcore gamer I will agree with you. Then again, nothing beats hours of Super Smash Bros. with some good friends. ;D

I think if you beat any game 100 times and have nothing to do that game'll get boring... regardless of the console. And anyway, like I said, the Gamecube's more of a social system. It's more fun the more people you have involved. Then again, since your first post was asking what the good games are, let me ask what games do you have already?

I also realized that I do the majority of my gaming on the pc instead of consoles. Things are probably a little different if you do most/all of your gaming on console systems... I really don't know *shrug*

SSBM was all about the multiplayer man. I've played my GameCube so much I have games it flat out refuses to play anymore, like James Bond: NightFire.

Hehehe, there is no limit to the number of threads that bash the Gamecube. Why? Because they can't see outside the box (*cough* Xbox *cough*).

Oh well, in my mind the Xbox has as few titles as the Gamecube does. The PS2 being the great equalizer. It has so many titles that it's just the most enjoyable system to get if you're not interested in choosing sides.

"Nintendo acknowledged that the Gamecube wasn't going to have the raw power of the PS2 and X-Box"

Who says the GameCube is inferior to the XBox and PS2? People may think it is, on the outset. It's relatively small, it doesn't play DVDs, and it uses mini-discs. I think the mini-disc is where most people start to think of the GCN as inferior, although that's extremely ridiculous. Yes, the mini-disc does NOT hold as much memory as the DVDs that XBox and PS2 can hold. But it's still more then enough to hold most games. And if it isn't then they can just put it on two discs instead of one, no problem. (Although, I can only think of two games off the top of my head that do have two discs...) Some people may find two discs are annoying, but seriously. How much time does it take to swap them? Ten seconds, top?

But actually that's the only disadvantage of the mini-disc, as opossed to the advantages. For one, they allow for extremely fast loading times. Since the disc is so much smaller the time it takes for the laser to "search" the disk is much shorter. Another plus is that they are much cheaper to manufacture. Oh, and they are much harder to pirate.

But all of this is a mute point, anyway. Isn't it the games that REALLY matter? I personally think the GCN has the best library of games, followed by the PS2, and then the XBox. I know most people would disagree, but that's my opinion.

Wow, I can do a whole podcast on this post (which I trimmed) but I agree with you. A few tidbits that I know a bit about.

1) Nintendo used the mini-disc (and the cartridge as well) for two reasons. First, they make money by "producing" the games for the publishers and getting a fee for that service. By keeping a proprietary medium for their system they totally control the production of the discs. Second, the amount of piracy on CD/DVD-based systems (Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox) is rampant, especially overseas. In fact, I went to a talk about this problem a few years ago at the GDC and Sega said that they believed that more than half of all the games being playing on the Dreamcast were pirated copies. Again, Nintendo used the mini-disc to make piracy much more difficult.

2) Time and time again I find myself playing my GameCube because they have games you just can't find anywhere else. In the past games either came out for the Nintendo 64 or the PS1, and rarely did the two meet. Today most games either come out for the GCN or the PS2/Xbox. The Xbox has mostly become a secondary release platform for PS2 games but with better graphics (which is one of the main reasons why Microsoft is going to force Xbox 2 developers to use their new universal interface system, which will make it harder to port games between platforms). GameCube on the other hand, has truly unique games which are some of the best ever made. Personally I want to play the best games I can, and I don't care what platform they're on.

3) Even if the GameCube doesn't have the "raw power" of the PS2 and Xbox time and time again the graphics in the GameCube are simply spectacular. Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, and Zelda (even if you don't like the style of the graphics) are some of the most beautiful games ever made. Xbox also has some amazing stuff, but there are also a lot of "rough corners" in their games. PS2 graphics? Well, some of their games look good, but even their best games don't look as good as those on the GameCube.

Ah, I can go on and on but I really like my GameCube. But I also really like my PS2 and Xbox as well. I just hate it when people put down the GameCube and yet they never played it or any of the games on it. Oh well, their problem, they don't know what they're missing!
