In some screenshots from the Powerpoint presentation, it has a button which says "Export to Maya".
Maybe we can also Import from Maya, and create with Maya before the game comes out..  :-\

Exporting to a 3D program for rendering makes perfect sense for an early editor prototype that was not connected to any sort of rendering engine. Proprietary 3rd party products will not enter into Spore's creation process, period.

They did something like this for the release of The Sims 2.  I say it's a great idea, but make it really limited so that you'd be almost forced into getting the game.  I mean, don't let the creature be textured, don't give them all of the features.  Just something to say wow I want this now.  Almost like a mini demo of sorts.

whaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!   I want textures too!!!!!

actually, I think releasing an editor with limitations could be shooting themselves in the foot.  If people are displeased with the editor they'll be less likely to buy the game.  Look at the Sims Bodyshop, fully functional.  :)   The thing making people buy the game is that the editor is only a small part of the game.  Plus, we're going to have the creature editor but that says nothing for item, vehicle, building or plant editors.

Also... it would be super sweet if we could have a texture editor as well  :D  (an in-game paint program) just in case  ;)

I think the plant editor would be great for them to release since it will be the last editor for the player to have access to and thus there will be very limited plant content

Yes, the plant editor would give a person the idea of the game.  If the plant editor is cool, what would they think about the creature editor.  They would be sold.

Good idea. Plants are harmess enough; if you've spend two hours creating a creature in a demo editor, and you cannot play it, then you'd be disappointed. Plants aren't that emotional.

I'd love to be able to export to Maya or another common format. What harm would it do? You wouldn't be able to -import- from it, and then people like me could make little movies and stuff with their creatures. Which means more gamer-created content. Which means more interest in Spore.

Even if it's just a little hidden menu option, or a seperate program, that'd be great.

I think this would be solved by giving us the vehicle/building/tool/plant editors.  That way we have WAY more then we could handle but we don't have to deal with the microbe->creature transition, we just buy our stuff when we get to our stage with it.

I'm betting on a vehicle editor or the early, 2D editor.

Maybe they will give us an editor, but not so early. Probably one month before the game.

I would hope it would be early.  They just have to make it really limited so that you will want to buy the game.

Let us make vehicles and buildings that animate, but don't let us put them into actual worlds where they can server purposes and blow sh!t up, that's reason enough.  Don't limit creativity, limit functionality.  If you let people make WHATEVER vehicle or building they want, they will buy the game just to see it in it.

I surely hope they go through with something like this.
