Condranid - My New Creature
« on: March 05, 2006, 09:51:43 pm »
Rather generic bipedal dragonoid. I'll upload some more info later, as well as a skinned model with a bit more detail and less artifacts.

*snip*

(edit: Removed the old picture as it was horribly done)

Nice creature. It's Lord Dracula.
A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. Let there be one ruler, one king.

Argh! My Auto UV skills are very subpar. I got the eye to look pretty cool though. Actually texturing this thing looks like a massive project... I may just end up pseudo-texturing it in photoshop.

Reworked the entire model using quads, making it a bit more pleasent looking in the process. Should be easier to texture now.

One question: Why has he got no knees and calf muscels on the front of his legs?

He has backwards jointed legs. The first texture will most likely be red. I'll update with anatomy and the like this afternoon.

A couple anatomical peculiarities:
These are largely derived from the massive ammount of weight from the wings added onto the back of a bipedal creature.
1) Backwards jointed legs: shifts the center of gravity forwards to make balance easier. Wing wings are fully deployed while standing, natural balance will result in the creature crouching to shift weight in line with the feet. When wings are retracted, the creature will be able to stand fully erect. What makes this particularly interesting, is that when the creature comes in for a landing, it will stand such that it is only five feet tall, and as it pulls its wings in, it'll stand to seven feet.
2) Large prehensile tail: in most species of creature a tail can be either largely mobile, or large, but not usually both. With the added ammount of weight on the back, and the fact that the center of gravity shifts so much, in order to be able to balance effectively, a tail that is both large and easily moved is needed. The tail should be relatively straight out when the wings are pulled in, and dropped to the ground or pulled up when the wings are deployed. In addition, the fin stretching from the nose horn to the ip of the tail allows the tail to be used as a rudder in flight.
3) Three digits on the hands and toes: One that isn't based on the added weight from the wings, directly at least. The fin across the body used as a rudder needs horns in verious locations to provide support, or else it would just collapse back into the body. If you look at the head, the ear fins also require these horns. This results in a three horn system across the head. This three bone system is repeated throughout the body in many locations, such as the feet, hands, and wings. This simplification results in less genetic material needed to build a condranid from a single cell, cutting down on the number of chromosomes, and thus the room for negative mutations.

General information
Diet: Carnivorous
Dimensions: 6'-8' tall with a bell curve centering around 7'. Wingspan of 10'-14' directly proportional to height. Tail length of 4'-5' diameter at base of 8"-1'.
Average Maximum speeds: 8MPH Ground, 24 MPH Air (Cruising)
