What program do you use to download the podcast?
« on: February 24, 2006, 06:36:52 am »
Hey all, I'm trying to get an idea of what podcast aggregator program you use. Or, in simple English, what program do you use to download and listen to the show? Some examples include iTunes, Juice, Doppler, and so forth.

If as many people as possible could answer I would really appreciate it, thanks!

I just download it using firefox from the direct link when it gets posted on the frontpage.

Yeah, me too. Maybe you should add a poll to this (Steve, not swerv)?

I didn't poll it because there are too many options. I would rather that people just write in what they use.

I used to just rip it with my browser, then I downloaded iTunes and started listening to it while I post in these forums.

On a related note, I have been on these forums for 7 days and ten hours. :D

I use iTunes, even though it's terrible (seriously, it uses up 100% cpu resources just to update a bunch of RSS links?!)

Depends, really. If the episode's news segment is mostly about PC gaming, I'll use iTunes, since I then listen to the whole thing. If it's mostly console news, I download the MP3 so I can use the segment timing from the announcement to skip past the news. (If there's no news segment, like this last episode, which I still need to get to listening to, I use iTunes too.)

At home I use Juice, at work I download with the browser. I listen to the podcast on my Samsung MP3-player while commuting or during my lunch break.

BTW: as everybody is always going on about how great and popular the Ipod is and I'm sick of hearing about it: just read in the paper yesterday that the market share in the USA is 78%, but only in two other contries (Japan and Australia) higher than 50%. Great satisfaction for me, because I think there are a lot of other MP3-players out there that are just as good or better than Ipods (how about listening to radio, recording stuff, deleting stuff) and there have been multimedia players around for years with much bigger screens than the video Ipod!

I use Juice to download it then listen to it on my Zen while catching the tube to/from work.

Totally off topic but I would be very surprised if the market share of the iPod was below 50% in the UK, everybody seems to have them (yes myself included, although its an old 3G one which has recently been replaced by said Zen)

I use iTunes as it is the only way for me to transfer it to my iTunes phone (slvr).  Well there is another way but it is much more complicated.  iTunes is great for being simple but it always runs useless processes on your PC even when you are not using iTunes (same with quicktime) which is a waste of resources.  Once I get a new mp3 player, maybe the Zune, I will probably get rid of iTunes.  (I hope that WMP 11 comes out with a way to subscribe to podcasts)

In case you were still looking for data on this, and in case anyone else hasn't mentioned it (I didn't read all the pages), I use Mozilla Thunderbird for all my RSS and email needs (though it doesn't do Flash, which is kind of annoying). It's a great thing to open up your email program and discover that your only new emails are spam, but oh look! There is a new Gaming Steve article on the RSS feed, or a new White Ninja or XKCD comic to possibly titter over.

My scroll wheel gets a good workout in Thunderbird, I <3 RSS - thanks Steve for making your feed links so obvious and accessible, and in many different formats. Syndication is great, and it's the only way I will ever visit a site again... I don't manually surf to sites, or use Bookmarks religiously... in fact, I detest when I find a great webcomic that doesn't have an RSS feed, because it means, practically, that I will never see it again.

Oh, and as far as what I play it on, I use my Creative Zen Vision:M. I love the bookmarks feature for those long podcasts you can't listen to in just one sitting (or one train ride, etc).

Even if I wanted to use iTunes, it doesn't work in 64-bit Vista.
