Short poems...
« on: February 21, 2006, 06:50:52 pm »
Ok, I was looking through some really old newsgroup posts of mine and found a poem that I love. Now, just as then, I do not know who wrote this and I've had little luck finding out. So if you know, please post it here. Since these posts derail fast, please post additional short poems if you feel the urge...

14000 Pounds of God

The Ocra's fanged dignity
Fills me with humility
One is wise to genuflect
To seven tons of self-respect

I have one that I memorized in school and I'm surprised I still remember it... it is kind of sad and not that short

Little Boy Blue (author unknown)

The little toy dog was dirty but sturdy and staunt he stands
The little toy soldier was red with rust and his musket molds in his hands
Time was when the little toy dog was new and the soldier was passing fair
That was when the little boy blue kissed them and put them there

"Now don't you go till I come" he said "And don't you make any noise"
And off he toddled to his trundle bed and he dreamt of his little toys

And as he slept the angels song awakend the little boy blue
The years are many and the years are long but the little toy friends are true
Faithful to the little boy blue they stand, each in the same old place
Awaiting the touch of a little hand and smile of a little face

And wondering while waiting the long years through in the dust of that little chair
What ever happened to the little boy blue who kissed them and put them there.

I still remember the intro to Canterbury Tales from 10th grade, but I can't spell any of the words since it's all Old English...

I was looking for this poem, not quite the original one I wanted but close enough. I think its something good to remember, love is best given to the living. -M
-----------------------------------------------------

Love Me Now

If you are ever going to love me,
Love me now, while I can know
The sweet and tender feelings
That from true affection flow.

Love me now
While I am living.
Do not wait until I'm gone
And then have it chiseled in marble,
Sweet words on ice-cold stone.

If you have tender thoughts of me,
Please tell me now.
If you wait until I am sleeping,
Never to awaken,
There will be death between us,
And I won't hear you then.

So if you love me, even a little bit,
Let me know while I am living,
So I can treasure it.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

-Robert Frost

Something that I remember from the Army. I don't remember why, but Frost was part of the training cycle.

Do not fear the walkings of the reaper,
Abandon your terror for it has no use,
This is no malevolant creeper,
He comes, and the great sleep will induce.
Take his hand and he will lead you back,
To his chariot of the souls,
Feel your eyelids growing slack,
And draws you into a night as black as coals.
Off you go then to the house of doom,
But do not go in anger my child,
It is merely a work of fate's spinning loom,
The seas of death are not rough, but mild.
Now your soul must drift into the eternal slumber,
As your senses grow number and number.

--

When the dawn sun is clad in rust
And the moonlight no longer shines
When all the plants have crumbled to dust
Will the earth forgive me?

When all the trees are wrought from steel
And the apples become spheres of iron
When the wind has a metallic feel
Will the earth forgive me?

When my breath becomes blackened smoke
When my blood has turned to mercury
When upon foulest rust I choke
Has the earth forgot me?

When the clouds are castles of lead
Upon a sky of polished silver
When all about me is dead
Has the earth forgot me?

When my breath becomes forever undrawn
My eyes forever unfocused
When all my children are a forge's spawn
Does the earth now hate me?

--

As you lay there, your back on the caressing fresh grass,
You seem to become ignorant, of the many hours that pass.
Feel the sunlight that warms the earth's every life,
Let it fall upon you, let it burn away your strife.

Insects mill about the skies, Bees visiting each bloom,
Birds singing peacefully from above, casting out thoughts of doom.
See the trees, the great pillars of wisdom that own the world,
Tall, watching forever, all their leaves out in the sun, uncurled.

Cats laze in the mid-day heat, peacefully taking in the light,
You feel quite at peace too, there is no need to use your might.
Nothing to do but lay there, lay there and feel the wind play on your face,
The gentle breeze's kiss, just lightly cooling all in this serene place.

Soon the sun shall set, and the skies of azure will turn to indigo,
The moonlight beams shall watch over, as all the animals lie low.
The serene silence of the night, when all creatures are at peace,
Think: I am natural too. I am one. I am not on humanity's leash.

--

Days like these get you down, dont they?
Trying to beat you down in every little way.
A load of rubbish tipped with hectic stress,
To be honest we all know its one hell of a mess.

Now, lie back on your bed, your pillow,
and feel it beneath you become soft, soft as willow.
See how dark and quiet it is now,
Before it was blinding noise, grinding like stress`s plough.

Come, come to the darkness, into the peace,
Into the silence, quietness, feel your body ease.
Gentle now, let the darkness be your cradle,
Dreams float in like mist, let the silence be your guide.

Conciousness fades away, drains from your body to the dark,
Dreams gently enter, your body goes limp as darkness makes its mark.
Feel your mind enter another world, leaving your body behind,
Unreality creeps in, no more does real life grind.
--

Revered liege, hailing from a distant land
His body ornate with decorations of gold
His might reaches across the burning sand
And enthralls all wanderers who dare to behold

Upon his mighty throne he is seated
Hailed as a god by his followers loyal
His kingdom, under the sun, super-heated
Under a sun of gold, ornate and royal

His mighty pyramids, sticking from the sand
Monuments to his exhalted rule
Built in burning toil, by many a hand
Never to be plundered by a greedy fool

Now he sleeps with his treasures of worth
Silent in his tomb, but listen to this verse..
Though he sleeps within the sands of the earth
All defiling his sleep will fall to his curse.

--

Silent is the eternal night,
In which our kin doth sleep,
Mortal emotion doth take flight,
When in passing a soul doth creep.
They return, then, to that from which they came,
Much to the grief of grasping mortality's hands,
Among the living, take flight does grief and blame,
Whereas those released do naught but tread time's sands.
They care not for anger and hate,
That those still material are willing to trade,
They know that it is merely a work of fate,
Cruel is not the word for the reaper's blade.
But the warmth and love from those who adore,
Are theirs to treasure forevermore.

--

Silent, Hush now, the day is done,
All the work, stress, anguish, happiness joy and fun.
The day itself grows weary, into shadow has it gone,
Look at the moon, sleep's twinkling jewel, sleeps now does the sun.

Listen to the silence, Look at the dark,
Nothing to disturb you, not even do birds the serenity mark.
Close your eyes, rest in your blanket of dreams,
Peace, dark and quiet - It claims all now, it seems.

Hush now, tarnish the peace not,
Let it absorb you, now in the peace you are caught.
At rest, at peace, feel your body slide away,
Rest now, sleep and dream, till the dawn of the new day.

--

I think that should do, for now...

It's not short but it's good.

      Oh, give me a clone
Of my own flesh and bone
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And after it's grown,
      Then my own little clone
Will be of the opposite sex.

      Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And when I'm alone
      With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

      Oh, give me a clone,
      Is my sorrowful moan,
A clone that is wholly my own.
      And if she's X-X,
      And the feminine sex,
Oh, what fun we will have when we're prone.

      Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And when I'm alone
      With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

      My heart's not of stone,
      As I've frequently shone
When alone with my own little X.
      And after we've dined,
I am sure we will find
      Better incest then Oedipus Rex.

      Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And when I'm alone
      With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

      Why should such sex vex,
      Or disturb or perplex,
      Or induce a disparaging tone?
      After all, don't you see,
Since we're both of us me,
When we're having sex, I'm alone.

      Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And when I'm alone
      With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

      And after I'm done
She will still have her fun,
For I'll clone myself twice ere I die.
      And this time without fail,
They'll be both of them male,
And they'll each ravage her by and by.

      Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
      And when I'm alone
      With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

Charge of the light brigade

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not tho’ the soldiers knew
  Someone had blundered:
Theirs was not to make reply,
Theirs was not to reason why,
Theirs was but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to the right of them,
Cannon to the left of them,
Cannon in front of them
  Volleyed and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell,
  Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air,
Sab’ring the gunners there,
Charging and army, while
  All the world wondered:
Plunging in the battery smoke,
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre-stroke
  Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not—
  Not the six hundred.

Cannon to the right of them,
Cannon to the left of them,
Cannon in front of them
  Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that fought so well,
Came thro’ the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
  Left of the six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
Oh, the wild charge they made!
  All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made!
Honor the Light Brigade,
  Noble Six Hundred!
What have you got against intellectual midgets? They're quite smart little guys as far as i can tell.

For three and a half year I ran something at work we called the 'hotseat'. All problem ticket regarding computer issues came through me and I either fixed them or sent them to the site tech to address. At 20,000 pages a year it got to be a handful. Here is a list from my insanity in the form of Hiaku.

FOr it to make more sense:
Remedy - Software used to handled problem tickets called in by users.
ECN - Equipment Control Number. Company issued tag to identify a device.
Novell - Netowkring software, our backbone, run on Windows XP
eDirectory - Piece of Novell, refered to when we want to remote control a computer, often broken.
Respin - Erase harddrive and start over. OS is thrashed.
DIS - Desktop Information Services (the techs)
DTR - Desktop Technology Request - basically a form to buy new toys (like a CD burner or a mouse)

Screen is dark again
Novell is not your friend here
Reboot or Respin
-Hotseat Haiku

Again and again
This PC likes to repeat
Here we go again
-Hotseat Haiku

Sending to site tech
Geese are not fun to hunt wild
Palms Ipaqs, same thing
-Hotseat Haiku

Linux is answer
The question is a hard one
Reboot or Respin
-Hotseat Haiku

Trays are not stable
Much time lost fixing this type
Hammer is best tool.

Tired PC sleeps
Please wake up this block of chips

Yeah, I know, double-post. I wanted to break this up. I found this in a file next to my haikus.

These are taken from a Rhyme Zone site where there's a competition for writing the most romantic first line and most unromantic second line...
Here are a few of the entries...

Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss
But I only slept with you, cause I was pissed

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you. But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head.

Of loving beauty you float with grace
If only you could hide your face

I thought that I could love no other
Until, that is, I met your brother

 Kind, intelligent, loving and hot
This describes everything you are NOT

I want to feel your sweet embrace
But don't take that paper bag off of your face

I love your smile, your face, your eyes-
Damn, I'm good at telling lies!

Every time I see your face
I wish I were in outer space

I saw your face as you walked by
But then I saw a better guy

My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you screwed up my life

I see your face when I am dreaming
That's why I always wake up screaming

My love you take my breath away
What have you stepped in to smell this way

My feelings for you no words can tell
Except for maybe "Go to hell"

 What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime

Felis Cattus,

is your taxonomic nomenclature,
an endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature?

Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
a singular development of cat communications

that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion,
it often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot,
the complex levels of behaviour you display
connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.

And though you are not sentient,
Spot,
and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Braaaaaaainnsssssss.....

    Christmas Day On The Somme

’Twas Christmas Day on the Somme
    The men stood on parade,
The snow laid six feet on the ground
    Twas twenty in the shade.

Up spoke the Captain ‘gallant man’,
"Just hear what I’ve to say,
You may not have remembered that
    Today is Christmas Day."

"The General has expressed a wish
    This day may be observed,
Today you will only work eight hours,
    A rest that’s well deserved.

I hope you’ll keep yourselves quite clean
And smart and spruce and nice,
    The stream is frozen hard
But a pick will break the ice."

"All men will get two biscuits each,
I’m sure you’re tired of bread,
    I’m sorry there’s no turkey
    but there’s Bully Beef instead.

The puddings plum have not arrived
But they are on their way,
I’ll guarantee they’ll be in time
    To eat next Christmas Day."

"You’re parcels would have been in time
    But I regret to say
The vessel which conveyed them was
    Torpedoed on the way.

    The Quartermaster’s got your rum
But you may get some yet,
Each man will be presented with
    A Woodbine Cigarette."

"The Huns have caught us in the rear
    And painted France all red,
Pray do not let that trouble you,
    Tomorrow you’ll be dead.

Now ere you go I wish you all
    This season of good cheer,
    A very happy Christmas and
    A prosperous New Year."

-Leslie George Rub, Australian Great War Soldier

EDIT: Someone might want to kick this on over to art.

    OZYMANDIAS

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Messing around with MS Word and wrote the last verse first -

Everything's Okay Inside

I can't stand it any longer,
Protected from the plagues outside.
Out there is cold, the death toll's rising,
But it's so warm inside.

The corpses won't stop piling up,
An endless rising tide
God knows I'll be soon to die,
At least it's warm inside.

The stench is getting fouler,
an odour of formaldehyde,
And smoke rising from flaming pyres,
It's getting warm outside.

When death comes knocking at my door,
I'll take it in my stride.
For the world is dark and full of weeping,
And I'm so cold inside.
No way dude, you're trolling me.

Here's an old one of mine.. just because I felt like it.

Tears of Mercury

Silver colored streams
Run down her face
Metallic ellipses fall to the ground

Insanity Drops
Tears of Mercury
Messenger wings of sadness

Drops of pain
Drops of sorrow
Tears of Mercury run

Sobs of pain released as
Tears of Mercury run
Down her raw face.
