Asking this particular community...hehe.  I think the poll is going to seem a little biased.  :D

They haven't marketed the game yet :-\.  The way I see it, them not marketing it yet (and it shouldn't be marketed yet, it's way too early) may have got the people already interested in the game dying to know more, but in terms of gaining more sales and attention (the whole point of marketing..), than no, it hasn't.

Your topic is called "Has the small amount of spore marketing paid off?", but the poll question is "Will you buy spore when it is first released?"  A bit misleading if you ask me.

For the topic name: I don't think they should be marketing yet, so it can't not pay off.  Deciding to not market when you should be, now that's when you ask if it can or can't pay off.  If you get me.

Until more concrete information is known I would wait to buy the game even if it came out tomorrow.  There is so much hype around the game from fans that it can't possibly live up to all of it.  I want to see what the game is and can do first.  If it turns out to be 10% evolution, 80% city/space, 10% future/cybernetic/genetics evolution then I don't know if it will be as exciting as it might be.  Sadly, we don't know yet how it will all play out.  Besides for a big game, whats the harm in waiting a month or two before playing it?

Quote from: A poll I conducted on the internet
How excited, on a scale of zero to ten (zero being you've never heard of it, one being you couldn't care less, andten being you cannot live another second without it) about the upcoming PC game called Spore?

(76.8%) Zero

(3.2%) 1 to 3

(7.4%) 5 to 7

(5.3%) 7 to 9

(7.4%) Ten

(95 total responses to this question)

23.2 percent of people who took this pole have heard of Spore. I'd say that's a lot.

Only 95 people though. That is a very small percentage of the gaming community. I think the lack of marketing is a good thing, and I think the lack of hype is a very good thing. However, once the game gets shown at E3, it's gonna get hyped by the gaming media. People will be coming out of whatever official demonstration that Maxis holds and they will be saying things to the effect of "Oh my God, Will Wright is a mother****ing GENIUS!"
OH MY CRAP IT'S E3

Well most games are really advetised more when they are a week away from coming out, and then they get more and more advertising from people who have played it and can write information about it.  right now it's too early to advertise a lot for this game.

But there has been advertising, why do we know about it! The GDC event, for example, would have been mainly a PR event to get people excited and filter out throughout the internet, through people such as Steve.

You do realize you're being ridiculous, yes?
