My first creature
« on: February 18, 2006, 05:59:27 pm »
Name: Whulk
Type: Cetacean
Lifestyle: Solitary carnivore (though there are exceptions; occasionally as many as a dozen will gather to feast on schools of dahtahroh, small, fast fish).
Habitat: Deep ocean.
Size: Up to 15 m long.
Weight: Up to 10 tons.
Diet: Pretty much anything smaller than it, including other whulks.
Hunt/Forage Success Rate: 60-70%
Armor: None.
Defenses: Size.
Weapons: Massive mouth.
Tools: Bioluminescence concentrated on the tips of projections on the chin.
Method of Eating: Uses aforementioned luminescence in deep water to attract prey. When prey is close enough, the whulk rapidly expands its large gullet, inhaling the prey. Muscles in the gullet crush the prey and expell water, while a sieve-like tongue prevents small prey from escaping.
Lifespan: 90 years at least.
Reproductive Rate: One young every 5 years.
Gestation: 12 months.
Offspring Survival Rate (before age of maturity): 99% (mother whulks gaurd young fiercely).
Offspring incubation: None (live birth).
Appearance: Long, eel-like body, with dorsal and ventral fins that run most of the body length, starting at the first pair of pectoral fins, which are used in maneuvering and ambush propulsion. Up to 3 pairs of smaller fins are located aft of the primary fins, likely vestigal. Coloration is typically a dark bluish grey, with splotches of lighter and darker color.
Description: Evolved from smaller dolphin-like creatures that found a niche in the deeper waters.

Another picture (I love artpad) of the whulk on the attack. I still have no clue how these things would become a sentient species, but my guess is thy'd become smaller, and their primary pectoral fins would become multi-digit hands.

I'm hoping that the picture actually shows up. It didn't work for me, but here's hoping it works for other people.

Same here.

For the sentient creature, just try to imagine a 2-D picture of your creature, then draw that  :)

Bah, figures. I spent a lot of time on the second drawing too, with glowy effects and all that... Maybe I'll do another one later...

Very cool! Maybe you should check out a real drawing program? You seem to be pretty skilled.

Thats interesting.  I remember a scientist telling me the reason why ants haven't taken over the world yet... its because they eat each other.

It is true that ants are the only other species on the planet that wages organized warfare. Maybe aliens observing earth are hoping humans keep it up so they don't take over the universe.  :P

Very cool creature, I liked how you showed it drawn out, I've never see that before.

But I really would be intrested to know what it would be like on land, how does his way to baiting prey work on land... hmmm.

Cool though

Ug, I got a stupid pink unicorn, hope next is better.

If I ever create the whulk in Spore, I'll probably keep it aquatic. I don't know if bioluminescence is possible (probably not) but I like the concept.

LMAO... I can see the aliens now sitting (or whatever they do ;) ) up there saying "You know the only reason humans haven't taken over the universe is because they kill each other"
