Bonemouse's Creatures (Borark and more)
« on: February 18, 2006, 04:43:31 pm »
Hi everyone. I've been lurking this board for a few weeks (pretty much since I found out about Spore) and all your cool creatures inspired me to do one of my own.

I did these while I was bored at work. I'm pretty happy with how the final creature turned out, but I think the evolution stages need to be reworked. I actually should be getting back to work, so I'll post my description later as well as some revised drawings.

I'm thinking a pale yellow. But that's because it reminds me of the Alien/Human hybrid in Alien: Ressurection.

Another incredible artist graces the boards.  ;D

I like 'em. Unfortunately, whenever I look at them I can't get the sound out of my head that the Hoppers in the Spore demo made.  ::)

The hoppers in the spore demo were my inspiration. And these guys are quite small, so I expect they'd have a rather high pitched vocalization as well. But I imagine them being more musical. Like a mix between a frog and a song bird. They're social predatory animals, so they'd need a fairly wide range of sounds. More then the chirp that the hoppers made.

By the way, thankyou all for your kind words. :D

Very good drawings. It's also fun to see it's not only Hydro who has a logic behind his names...  ;)
And you know what? Chances are good that thing is createable in Spore.

A random thought just struck me: do they actually hop, like the creatures in the game? 'Cause those elongated limbs suddenly made me think they could walk on their toes, like the tripodal Willosaurs. Then their ankle/shin could widen out and provide them with a natural seat while they walk on tiptoes.  ;D

Very cool drawings and interesting name. I does sort of remind me of a one legged Gollum.

Thanks. :D

Yeah, it does look like Gollum. Kinda creepy, kinda cute.

As for the walking versus hopping thing. They do walk on their toes but instead of running they hop. They also hunt avians in packs. They hide it tall grasses and wait for one to fly overhead and they jump up and use crude hooks and ropes to bring it down.

Click for a bigger image.

Here's a picture of their earliest aquatic ancestor. These guys use a similar hunting technique as the modern Borark. They use the use their claws to drag themselves along the seabed waiting for prey to swim over head. At which point the use the powerful tails to give themselves a powerful burst of speed to take down their target. These guys feed mostly on large herbivore animals that graze in herds. They attack simutaneously to seperate the weak and young from the rest of the herd for easy pickings.
