Syndicate Wars
« on: February 01, 2006, 04:26:16 pm »

Anybody remember Syndicate Wars?

It's such a pity Bullfrog went under. They had so many great games. Magic Carpet, Populous and The Syndicate series (Syndicate, Syndicate Wars) were awesome.

Syndicate Wars is probably my favorite game of all time - a bleak cyberpunk dystopic filled with ambience, cyborg agents and a terrorist cult...

I wish someone would make a modern version. Thankfully we can download SWARS from Underdogs or Abandonia.

Who did you prefer to play as? Eurocorp Syndicate or the Church of the New Epoch?

hell yeah! I loved this game, as well as all other Bullfrog games.
Magic Carpet was one of my dad's favourite games.

I even remember when my mate introduced me to syndicate wars, I think i was about 14 at the time.
Have you got a link to where I can download it?

You cant download it, it is prohibited by the ESA.

There for, posting a link will be an illegal action.

Oh, I have Syndicate Plus (Syndicate + the American Revolution expansion) on a CD here, along with Strike Commander, Wing Commander II, and Ultima VIII - This CD came with a SoundBlaster 16 back in the day.

I never really got into Syndicate, actually - My agents just got killed repeatedly and rapidly. It's been yeeeears though, maybe I should try it again sometime.

(And I've never played Syndicate Wars, nor heard of it until now)

www.theesa.com

They say whether it is right to download programs that haven't yet been officially released as freeware. Usually a developer notices that an old product is being distributed, they run to the ESA, tell them about it, then the ESA emails every abandonware site that "plays by the rules" (no pun intended) a memo with the list of games that cannot be downloaded. The only reason The Underdogs has it is because they have so many games (close to six thousand I believe) that they cant update the site fast enough. Abandonia has it listed correctly as a "No Go, by the ESA" but underdogs are lagging behind. Also, the Underdogs is so old, much of what they have is "grandfathered in" meaning that because they were distributing before certain laws were passed, they maintain the ability to distribute certain titles, so this might apply to to Syndicate Wars.

I dont have any moral objection to it, but people should know that the ESA has already officially banned the free distribution of this game as abandonware, just be aware.

Wow... I used to play the first Syndicate on my SNES, I loved that game so much... I never really played any of the other versions, but I'd love to see an updated one released!
Currently playing:

Rocket Slime (DS)             Guitar Hero II (PS2)
Resistance (PS3)               Zelda (Wii)

So many good games, so little time...

Almost as if to mock us, the original Syndicate is still under ESA protection  :o

I do remember the original Syndicate when it came out for the PC. It had a real "Blade Runner" feel to it. When you've finally upgraded your agents to the max and their toting mini-guns, things really start getting fun. Didn't Bullfrog do the excellent Dungon Keeper (1 & 2) series?

Bullfrog did the excellent Dungeon keeper and the decidedly crappy sequel if thats what you mean. They also made them park and theme hospital, which were both fantastic.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

I wonder if anyone has bought up the rights to these games? Does anyone know?

Yeah, Syndicate and (to a much greater extent Syndicate Wars) really did have that Blade Runner / Cyberpunk feel. That was one of the things I loved about it.

Populous was the first ever God Sim too, I believe, and the rightful ancestor of Spore!
