That's something I wouldn't half mind seeing in Spore.

Whats even coller is the defense that japanese honeybees have against hornets. They dont sting them, they bundle around the hornet, then flap their wings so fast that the hornet overheats in the centre and dies. It would be dissapointing not to have swarms in spore at some point...

well, it was said somewhere (i forget where exactly, the interview maybe?) that you can make your creature more social and have them be like packs or herds, and its only a short step from a pack to a swarm mentality :)

Thats a huge leap.  Packs of dogs aren't anything like swarms of bees.  I would assume that we won't see any swarms though I do think there will be quite large packs if you do things just right.

What about dogs with bees in their mouths that shoot bees at you when they bark?
There is a method to my madness. That method is in and of itself quite mad, but it is method nonetheless.

true swarm mentality in action is distributed decision making, the individuals that make up a swarm need not communicate but by acting in concert they are able to do some amazing things

Boids are pretty good examples of what simple rules acheive.
or this 3D version

swarms and swarm like group action can do incredible things
"6.4 Um's per minute" or "The Speed of Wright

An adventurer in the land of who gives a ****

The idea is to mix one ingredient that will burn very fast with a second ingredient that will supply enough oxygen for that burning. This burns so fast, it's an explosion.

Locusts are crazy. They actually have a trigger that causes them to swarm. Not sure if other swarming species have their own triggers, but in locusts it has something to do with repeated contact to their hind legs.

But these are all insects, is there anything larger then a bug that swarms?

Zombies. they swarm. The intelligence of a zombie horde is a result of the mindless action of its component zombies, just like insect swarms.

The only creatures that I think swarm are mice and lemmings.

i assume you mean predatory swarming as opposed to vegetarian herding?  piranhas.  also rats like doggyspew said.  snakes swarm while mating.  and zerg.
