What do you do while listening?
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:31:01 am »
What do you you do while listening to the podcast?

I listen to GamingSteve (and other podcasts) while playing games!  I play World of Warcraft and have Steve on too - luckly I have a keyboard with pause feature for Windows Media player - makes it easy to pause if I get interrupted or need to concentrate on the game.

My friend puts it on his iPod and listens to Steve in the car as an alternative to the radio.

But what do you do?

I drive to and from work listening to Steve on my MP3 player. Definitely makes a long drive go by faster.

I usually listen with my iPod in the car or while mowing the yard in the summer but sometimes I listen on the computer while browsing the forum. I often listen to it twice to make sure I caught everything.

I'm usually working, chatting, or doing household chores, since I only ever listen via winamp and speakers.  I do have an mp3 player (possibly the only one of 2 people who don't use an ipod), but I rarely use it for more than simple file backup and transfer space.

I'll either be playing a game, console or PC.  That or just on various forums or gaming websites.

Usually I listen to it while browsing the internet, or doing homework.

And Steve, since I've been listening to your podcast, I've been getting straight A+! *wink wink*

I'm usually gaming. Like the Wow player said above, my keyboard has a pause function, so I just load up FEAR (which I am, I'm ashamed to say, too afraid to play without the sound muted) and soak up all the gaming info.
The reason I hate/Boycott Sony: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a Rootkit is, so why should they care about it?"

I don't know how people listen to music or poscasts while they play games. That totally defeats the purpose of playing for me. When I play a game, I want to be IN the game...lost--but if I'm having to focus on what Steve is saying, or am killing Nazis as I listen to Tears for Fears...it brings me out of the virtual reality I'm purposefully trying to get lost in.

Not to mention, I play a lot of competitive games like CS, BF2, or COD...I NEED to hear every footstep, and the direction from which it came. Listening to music will get you killed...in fact, I'd go so far as to say not wearing headphones weakens players...not to mention jamming to music or listening to podcasts.

I want to hear that crow caw in the distance. I want to hear the grunt of a Charr in a nearby camp. I want to hear the enemy player drop down from a box, and make a slight sound alerting me to his presence behind me. Sound engineering and awareness is half the game experience.

Anyhow.

eXistenZ: I agree I couldn't play BF2 or CS with the podcast going, but a game like WoW or EQ2 is very playable that way.  The in-game audio for MMO's generally just doesn't add much like it does in single-player games.  Of course, if you end up in an instance and a scripted encounter, there might be voiceovers and that does get confusing.

Games like Civ2 or Rise of Nations also don't have much soundtrack worth worrying about - the podcast makes a good background for that as well.
