What do you do while listening?
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:31:01 am »
What do you you do while listening to the podcast?

I listen to GamingSteve (and other podcasts) while playing games!  I play World of Warcraft and have Steve on too - luckly I have a keyboard with pause feature for Windows Media player - makes it easy to pause if I get interrupted or need to concentrate on the game.

My friend puts it on his iPod and listens to Steve in the car as an alternative to the radio.

But what do you do?

I drive to and from work listening to Steve on my MP3 player. Definitely makes a long drive go by faster.

I usually listen with my iPod in the car or while mowing the yard in the summer but sometimes I listen on the computer while browsing the forum. I often listen to it twice to make sure I caught everything.

I'm usually working, chatting, or doing household chores, since I only ever listen via winamp and speakers.  I do have an mp3 player (possibly the only one of 2 people who don't use an ipod), but I rarely use it for more than simple file backup and transfer space.

I'm usually gaming. Like the Wow player said above, my keyboard has a pause function, so I just load up FEAR (which I am, I'm ashamed to say, too afraid to play without the sound muted) and soak up all the gaming info.

I don't know how people listen to music or poscasts while they play games. That totally defeats the purpose of playing for me. When I play a game, I want to be IN the game...lost--but if I'm having to focus on what Steve is saying, or am killing Nazis as I listen to Tears for Fears...it brings me out of the virtual reality I'm purposefully trying to get lost in.

Not to mention, I play a lot of competitive games like CS, BF2, or COD...I NEED to hear every footstep, and the direction from which it came. Listening to music will get you killed...in fact, I'd go so far as to say not wearing headphones weakens players...not to mention jamming to music or listening to podcasts.

I want to hear that crow caw in the distance. I want to hear the grunt of a Charr in a nearby camp. I want to hear the enemy player drop down from a box, and make a slight sound alerting me to his presence behind me. Sound engineering and awareness is half the game experience.

Anyhow.

eXistenZ: I agree I couldn't play BF2 or CS with the podcast going, but a game like WoW or EQ2 is very playable that way.  The in-game audio for MMO's generally just doesn't add much like it does in single-player games.  Of course, if you end up in an instance and a scripted encounter, there might be voiceovers and that does get confusing.

Games like Civ2 or Rise of Nations also don't have much soundtrack worth worrying about - the podcast makes a good background for that as well.

I understand your viewpoint, and in some cases it would apply to me. However, we differ in what we think is important in a game. I personally like to hear the grunt of Charr, or the clang of swords over a hill not visible to me, or even my own subtle footsteps on grass, dirt, wood, or metal.

I know, I may be wierd and in the minority--but I like ALL my ambient sounds. MP in a no-brainer, you HAVE to hear every little noise. But the crazy thing is, there are people that run around playing CS and BF2 with music on, or even worse, NO SOUND! People are bad enough FPS players, they certainly don't need to drop another 45% efficiency because they are deaf.

I suppose the first step to getting good in a MP game is to have a competetive streak in you. So that when you get owned from behind for the 10th time because you didn't hear homeslice enemy dude open the door behind you, you will get tired of this, stop playing music, and try and become a better, more efficient soldier.

But hey, I'm a FPS fanatic...play how you will, enjoy yourself, but be warned, I am the guy who knifes you from behind because you crank the volume on the chorus to "Hit Me Baby One More Time!"

I tried doing other things while listening, but I found that if I do anything other than listen to Steve, I missed what he was saying. So now I tend to devote time specifically to Steve. Since the only freetime I ever have is late at night, every single Steve podcast in recent history (about half a year) has put me sleep. This I find to be a good thing, as I have trouble sleeping otherwise. From that point of view, I'd like a podcast every day, but it generally takes 90+ minutes for a podcast to get to me to sleep.

Mostly play Mario Kart or Animal Crossing I dont find I need to listen to Mario Kart to properly play it. Sound really isn't essential for most upkeep of town. If you do things like fishing sound helps even then it doesn't need to be to loud and you can concentrate on both But just genral up keep of town such as finding fossils weeding talking to neighbours isn't sound required although things like reading the text sometimes is hard to do while concentrating on steve's podcast its only small amonts of text.

I listen to it in my car while driving to and from work, and also at work, while fixing laptops.

And if a podcast gets released in the weekend, or I just dont get around to it untill the weekend. I'll listen while playing Civ4 or someother strategy/rts game, might even get baked at the same time which is always fun

That's definetely a great deal.  I find it extremely difficult to do ANYthing while listening to a podcast like gamingsteve's, as I can't pay attention to both things at the same time.

I've tried different things (don't like sitting 2 hours in silence staring at my computer screen, fees like wasting my time), I eventually tried playing chess, ... , for a few seconds.   Really I can do nothing but listen.

I have a part-time job delivering papers, so I listen to Gaming Steve while walking. That sure makes the 3-4 hours of constant walking much shorter.

Ok, don't play it on your 360 while playing a game. It will stop at a cut scene (good thing), but then it starts over after it (bad thing)

I usually grab some snacks prop up a pillow, turn it on and flip off the screen. Its much more relaxing that way, and I can actually concentrate on what hes saying. Sometimes though if I can't understand whats going on, sort of like with the Spore interview, I'll just listen and read along at the same time, makes it easier.

It's called a 'Pod'cast because its for your i'pod' which is an mp3 player which can play podcasts, cause podcasts are mp3's!
OMG it all makes sense now!!!

Recently now I have my new job I started listening to music from my 512 memory stick. I have also started putting steve's podcast on the memory stick as well. When i rock into work I plug my headphones into the PC put the stick in the USB port and try hard as heck not to start singing steves intro out loud so the whole office can hear.

I better go grab my memory stick now before I forget so I can upload the latest episode that I downloaded earlier.

What do I do while listening to Steve's podcast? Why, I touch myself inappropriately! Of course!

Seriously.

;)

[In truth: I'm usually playing WoW, writing, or using my DS. Sometimes I'm munching at the same time or talking to friends. Hmm. I should probably show Steve more attention, but I like to keep busy and I understand most of what he says anyway. He liked the PS3's pricetag, thought Nintendo's showing was weak and unoriginal, and felt the 360 needs more fighting games. Right?]

Nothing - I find if I do other things that the words go right over my head.

I clean my room.  The longer between podcasts... the messier my room!

I actually work while listening to Steve (my job is typing, so I get the pleasure of listening to podcasts all day).

Always listen while commuting, a good two hour episode gets me to work and back again quite easily...

I clean around the house while listening.  Sometimes I listen while downloading, er, pictures of women, which doesn't require a great amount of my concentration.  So while my reptilian brain concentrates on mammary glands and such, my Neo Cortex can be stimulated by Gaming Steve's soothing tones.

Who said the male brain can't do two things at once?

Along with several other podcasts I listen to and the one I do, I put them on a CD and listen in my car. It plays MP3's and makes driving around town a lot more enjoyable.

I stock groceries for 7-8 hours every night (overnight) and I spend that entire time either listening to Major Nelson or Gaming Steve, or listening to music.  I have an iRiver H10, and I would have already been dead without it.  ;D
