Wheel of Time series: What do you think?
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:06:03 am »
So guys and galls,

A quick search on the forums didn't give me too much hits on this topic so:

What do you think of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series?

My own opinion (and I am only up to book 4 or so) is that it has some great highlights, cool setting and some cool characters and "races" (the word race isn't really applicable here I know) but that it has it's serious flaws as well. I do enjoy it though.

well i am currently reading them as well, I'm on book 6. My favorite character is Perrin, but i wont say much about him as i can't remember what happened exactly where you are at. I do like his struggle between being a blacksmith and an ta'veren.

Rand is a jerk, and for the story being centered around him, he is my most hated main charatcer ever in a book. Morraine has her moments of being a human, but mostly just is annoying. Nynaeve and Elayne are kind of disappointing too, as they act too similar. Ever notice that Robert Jordan uses the same things to describe stuff the same way all the time. Sweat seems to be a huge thin for him too.

The Trollocs are a neat variant/ replacement to trolls and ogres in most Sci Fi/Fantasy series.

I am going to finish this series out, and am mostly enjoying it despite a few complaints of repetition. However, when you think about writing 12 books each being around 1000 pages, you are bound to repeat yourself a few times. This is allowing for the slight recapping that happens in every book and is understandable.

I think I stopped at book 9.  The series quickly goes downhill after book 4.  Like one entire book seems like it's 1000 pages about how silly women are....and that's it.  I kept reading the new ones hoping that it would pick up again, but I've pretty much lost all faith in it now.

"The Wayfarer Redemption" series by Sara Douglass and "A Song of Fire and Ice" series by George R R Martin pretty much smoke The Wheel of Time nowadays.  In fact, one of the reviews on the back of "The Wayfarer Redemption" (the first book) sums it up pretty nicely: "There are few absolutes in making judgments of commercial fantasy, but let's just say it's a bit better than anything by Robert Jordan." (Australian Book Review).

Back on topic though, I really enjoyed Perrin and Faile (I think that's his wife's name, right?) and the events surrounding them in the Two Rivers.

The Wheel of Time series is a waste of time after the fourth book.

This is the series that never ends, it goes on and on my friends, once you started reading you can never really end, cause it's the series that goes on and on my friends.

crippits:  yeah, i've read halfway through book ten, and in the latter half of the series they ALL turn into *******s.  to sum up (SPOILERS): rand becomes more and more of a jerk; that's it.  egwene gets brainwashed by the wise ones and now she can chuckle childishly while putting hits on her political rivals.  elayne and nynaeve are now sucking up to her. perrin accepts his role of leadership and accordingly he becomes a jerk also.  we lose the whole dynamic of him using a weapon only as long as he can keep hating it, and now he comes to like killing; at the same time there's no sense of him having a moral failure as the narrative seems to approve of his actions.  Moiraine is replaced by someone bitchier than herself.  with these main characters rising to promenance, we get a view of what life is like under their rule... suffice to say, it's utter fascism, but again the narrative approves.  institutional coercion, systematized treachery, stalinesque purges are presented as entertainment.  a significant portion of one of the latter novels involves a member of the black ajah being slowly broken and mentally enslaved by the shaido, for no apparent reason beyond gratuitously revelling in her suffering.  it occured to me a while ago that robert jordan might not be entirely well.

I've never read any of them, but I did manage to find a signed paperback copy of the first one in a secondhand bookshop for a pittance.

I keep hoping the author will die so i can sell it on Ebay for a small fortune.

Does this make me a bad person?

I've done some reviews of the prequel book and the first two books as I am still in the middle of book 3.  http://hgamerreviews.blogspot.com/  <--- Link to my reviews blog.

Now I like the books and post on a couple WoT boards.  I don't believe they are second only to Lord of the Rings as a lot of people push them off as.  Jordan (who I've met and lives within 30 minutes of my current living space) is great at fleshing out a world.  What he is horrible about is heaping details onto details that make parts of his books dry as all can be.  Now that is something you notice in the first three books no doubt.  Now if you go and read the prequel, New Spring, the story is faster paced and I actually enjoyed it a lot more.

The dry material aside Jordan really knows how to kick it in gear.  For example the ending to book 2 was some of the best fantasy reading I've done in a while, but there is a good chunk of that book that is just flat out boring.

So Jordan is a writer you have to be patient with.  You definately get a COMPLETE world which is a failure of a lot of fantasy writers.  You get rich characters with varying plotlines(Mat is by far my favorite character so far).  Jordan is not shy about fleshing out a characters storyline and making it a large part of a book ignoring the main plotline all together.  But you also get a lot of dull filler :/

Now Jordan is writing the last book as we speak.  He has already stated thats the end of the story he envisioned.  Now he will be going back for 3 (or maybe 2 not sure) prequel books like New Spring which I honestly think may be the best of the series :)

I think after book 3 I will be taking a break from the series for some Song of Fire and Ice since all I hear is absolute LOVE for the series.

wow, you put a lot of thought into that. I like the series, and Robert Jordan is a good author. As i am an author as well, or trying to be, i know how hard it is to bring  life into it. He does do that. However, have you noticed that many characters are just carbon copies of others with just a slight twist?

Have you noticed a lot of people in real life are the same?  When you just glance at them they are John Doe #118324.  Now if the books revolved more around them you would probably pick up on a lot of their differences.  The main characters are all quite diverse IMHO, but not to the point where they don't fit.

the reason that i brought it up is that Nyneave and Elayne are very similar. Granted one is all for Lan, and the other for Rand. But they are both very arrogant, and childish. The act so much alike they could be sisters. Yes their backgrounds are different, one, the Daughter-heir of Andor, the other a former Wisdom. But they both are used to things their way, bot expect it their way and both have the same ideas of the other. If it weren't for Aviendha's involvement i don;t think things would have changed.

I'm in book 3 right now and Elayne is more like an admirer of Nynaeve and I've noticed more of a "big sister/little sister" relationship forming.  Granted I don't know how it changes over time and later in the series, but early on it feels very much like Elayne wants to be "just like Nynaeve".

sorry i should be a bit more non spoilerish. looking back though, the characters really do change quite a bit. I am currently re-reading the first of the series, Trying to regain some of the adventure and the feel of the danger and ominous menace of the Dark One.

I'm on book nine right now. I can understand why some people hate them; it takes a lot of work to read them only to discover it may not be what you had been hoping for. Thankfully I'm not one of those people. TWOT's plodding and sometimes meandering storyline is my cup of tea; yes I know that make me something of a freak/geek. A lot of people particularly hated Winter's Heart, the book I'm reading, but I've actually found this one particularly enjoyable so far. If I had to pick a favorite it would be a toss up between The Shadow Rising and The Path of Daggers. Oh, and Perrins my favorite character too.

Book # 10 really, really sucked, but the new book, Knife of Dreams(#11) was the best one in years, Some of the story lines finally get wrapped up and it Has a awesome fight that show how powerful Rand could be if he knew how to control more of saidin.

There is no queston the best chartater in the series is Matt, I would love a book with only Matt,Tuon, Rand, and Perrin chapters and leave out the annoying chapters with Nynaeve, Elayne, Min and Aviendha.

Cant wait for the next book in the series which I think is the last one and Rand will finally fight the Last Battle.

i have spoken with different people who have read the series, and both men and women find those four annoying. So it's not just a "guys want fighting and action" thing. Each character started out being very neat, and well tought out. They provoked you to make a decision concerning them. However, as the story grows broader, and with more events happening right on top of each other, i feel that Robert Jordan lost his focus on the specific people. Characters that were once bold and full of colour, have turned pastel and bland.

I have bought the 1st book of this series twice and tried to read it twice. And I simply cannot get into it. Something about the way Jordan writes doesn't appeal to me at all, and I found myself struggling inside of the 1st couple of chapters. I'm glad others seem to like it though, though I also sometimes get the impression that people are reading them just to read them at this point. Like: "Hell, I've already read this far into the thing; I should probably keep on going."

Im currently on Fires of Heaven and im still enjoying it.
I like the more aggressive subplots, like the Aes Sedai Civil War and The Black Ajah stuff.
The bit im on at the moment is all about Aiel and Egwene learning stuff. This is frankly boring.
My favourite book so far is The Eye Of The World or The Shadow Rising.

I've trudged through all of them so far, mostly because many aspects of the series give me ideas for my own writing. They vary in quality. I agree that the latest one was the best in a long time. My favorite character is definately Perrin, although he seems to decrease in depth as the series progresses.

I have to admire RJ for producing such a lengthy series without going bat-**** insane. One of my biggest problems is I can't progress very far without rehashing every detail in every part of my writing until it feels perfect, and I also get extremely side-tracked by other projects.

Join the club. I keep around half a dozen projects in production at any given time and shift back and forth between them. I find it keeps me fresh. The only thing is that you have to keep focused on those stories, on those products, and not get tangential with any others that pop into your head in mid-development. That said, I wish you luck. :)

Pity he's dying. He says there's something like ten or more books left until the end of the series, but he's not sure he'll live long enough to complete them, espeacially now that he's been diagnosed with amyloidosis.

I just finished Fires of Heaven and i disagree with the people saying it gets worse after 3. Fires of Heaven is currently my favourite book. I loved the various battles and twists, and it was a major page-turner. Looking forward to Lords of Chaos.

There are not ten books left in the series, there are ten more books he'd like to write but there is only one more book left in this series (supposedly, it's rumoured it'll be 1400~ pages and maybe split in two like Tad Williams "Green Angel Tower").

Anyways Book 11 was infinitly better then book 10, it was definitly the best in the series since book 6.

Well, I can see why some people hate it, definitely. There is a lot of great material there, but other than that there are just chapters on chapters on chapters of complete boredom in which nothing moves forward in the plot.

I'd have to agree that the series declined after the second book, which was my favourite, but it's still worth reading. I'm on book 6, but am currently taking a break from the series. You know what? It will probably be a lot more interesting when I pick it back up, sometimes if you stick to one fiction for too long you can get burned out on it.

All in all, I think it's a pretty good series, at least up to where I've gotten. Better than most, that is.

As for my favourite character? I'd have to say Mat, although Perrin comes in a close second.

Well, I'm surprised you think so.

I'd have to agree with what other people are saying. I've read the first 8 books, and they really feel like a chore to read after a while. I know every character should have a backstory and everything, but I really don't give a **** about hearing the life story of each and every virtually inconsequential character who shows up maybe three times in the entire book. Jordan's books would be a lot more readable if he could simply discern where to go into minute detail and where not to.

I'm nearly finished with book 10. To be honest, the series has lost some of its charm for me now. The furthr in you get the more dificult it is to keep track of the endless wave of names and faces. I've noticed particularly in the last two books that Jordan his been getting into the habbit of giving overly long introductions to minor characters early on in one book only to not bring that charcter back up untill much later on with almost no reintroduction what so ever.

I can clearly remember enjoying each book as I fenished it wondering to myself why people where so harsh on the books after 4. I think I'm beginning to understand. After book 4, looking back, it becomes defficult to make heads or tails of how those books' events had any baring or impact on the progression of the story as a whole. Books 1-4 where much more clearly structured so that even ten books in you can easily remember why those book where fun to read and important to the story's progression. Can any one whose read atleast eight or nine of the books remeber why book 6 was important? Book seven? Eight? While the books can be enjoyable while reading them the later ones begin to lose those tangible points that your memory can cling onto so that you can remeber why each book was good and important to the series as a whole.

I just began reading book 3. I'm guessing that at the speed at which I read, ill be done with the entire series next summer. So far I love all of the books, although sometimes im like "wtf? Why didnt he just...", but then again, its a fictional world. For now, Robert Jordan and Robin Hobb are my favorite writers.
