Which Pratchett first?
« on: January 30, 2006, 09:57:17 am »
As a sucker for Geek novels I absolutely have to read some Pratchett books. What I am not sure about is wheither I would have to read them chronologically (written) or in another order. All you Pratchett-a-holics help me!

Reading them in order can be good because they get progressively better and it can be a little painful reading the earlier ones after reading the first ones.  I personally recommend reading Mort before reading anything else because it's a good indicator of whether you'll like the series.  Also, if you read any of the guard books, read Guards Guards! first.  Other than that, there is an order to the books but only within their specific sections like Guard books, Death books, Witch books, etc. -leeman

Start at wyrd sisters and work your way chronologically through the rest. All books before WS are pretty meh.

I'd start with the City Watch novels with Vimesy and the crew - Guards! Guards!, Men At Arms, Feet Of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch and then Thud!

Very closely followed by the antics of the witches - Sourcery, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies and Maskerade (I have a feeling I missed one of the witches ones out there, but my books are in storage at the moment, in the process of moving)
You forgot Carpe Jugulum, but dont worry it was pretty forgettable. It was basically just lords and ladies with Vampires instead of homicidal elves. Maskerade is my personal favorite out of those, but it helps to have seen The Phantom of the Opera musical to appreciate most of the jokes.

For some reason I've never been as interested in the Witches mini-series as I was in the others. MY favorite ones are definitely the Watch books. I also like the Death books with Rincewind coming in 3rd. Then there's all those other Miscellaneous books
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

I like the Watch books, and all the stand alones. They have an excellent flavor to them. The Truth and Going Postal are two of my favorite books.

Its mostly the standalones that have them but I love the books with the faculty of the Unseen University. I think Moving pictures is the first one and the most recent one has been The Last Continent. Theyre basically a bunch of very intelligent but also incredibly childish wizards who keep bickering over things and spend half their time concocting really awful gags.

I'd try Good Omens first.  Possibly Strata, too, as it sorta leads you into the Discworld novels.  I found Dark Side Of The Sun quite enjoyable.  The Discworld novels are worth reading in order, though some of them can stand as sets of their own.

Dark side of the sun and strata i didnt really enjoy that much (ok, i enjoyed dark side of ther sun). Theyre a lot more straight sci-fi and by the standard of other sci-fi they arent that great. Good omens is a masterpiece, read it or regret not reading for the rest of your life!

I say start at the beginning, "The colour of magic". Excellent book, and it does a good job introducing you to the discworld.

Mort. I always give people Mort to read first. You have to work your way up to COM and LF (though if you can read them first, it's always a bonus).
