Your favourite movie villains.
« on: January 29, 2006, 05:38:43 am »
We all have characters we love to hate.

Who are your all time favourite movie villains?

Two characters stand out for me.

Don Logan played by Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast, a truly terrifying psychopath, and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in Wizard of Oz.

In both cases what stands put for me is just how much the actors put into the roles, they really gave heart and soul to the job,and it shows.

in armageddon, when they try to make the asteroid into the villain.. that was great - NOT.

cowboy bebop isn't a movie* but i have to say Vicious ranks among my all time favorite villains.  he's completely evil, but somehow in a believably human way, and has his own powerfull alure.  also he isn't a pushover.  it's vital that the villain not be a pushover, but for some reason they usually make them weak... then again i liked baron harkhonen from dune, even though he was killed by a small child.

*technically there is a movie, but vicious isn't in it, and vincent isn't as good as vicious
I have been told
not by one but two of my lovers
that I've got a heart of gold
but I'm unable to share it with others
They call me a poet who'll never have a poem
a tiger with no taste for bone
I'm the wonderful wonderful wizard who's waltzing alone

speaking of evil asteroids i thought that zorg or whatever his name is that Gary Oldman played in the 5th element was great.

The hitchhiker from 'The Hitcher' (Rutger Hauer)
John Doe from 'Se7en' (Kevin Spacey)
Agent Smith from 'The Matrix' (Hugo Weaving)

I should have more, but I'm drawing a blank.

Don't know if it counts - Tyler Durden from Fight Club.  The Emperor from Return of the Jedi (love the last scenes with Luke and Vader).  Must admit Hannibal Lecter was a cool villain as well.

This guy's not in a movie (as far as I know) but I pick Achilles from Ender's Shadow.

It's cliche but Darth Vader is still one of the most fun villains to watch and has a whole lot of nostalgic pull for me.

To be hip and cool though I'll also Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' Steerpike in the Gormenghast series.  Absolutely chilling. -leeman

Donald Pleasance as Blofeld in 'You only live twice'. He started the scarred supervillain cliche!

Nobody mentioned the parody of him?  Dr. Evil?

Or Megatron?
Jack Torrence from The Shining?
Cruella DeVille?
Sauron?
Cypher from The Matrix?

A few I really like but I don't know about "best ever":
Steve Martin as the dentist in Luittle Shop of Horrors.
Mr. Huph from The Incredibles
Bruce the great white in Finding Nemo.
Do the weird aliens in Abyss count as villains?
The Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail

My favorite at the moment:  Godzilla
