All right, here are your numbers to start with.

Starting serfs: 50
Serf growth: 1 per 10 per day (so you start with +5/day)
Starting gold: 100
Gold income for idle serfs: 1/day (builders, workers, and trainees aren't idle)
Initial crates: 50 (crates are the measure of industrial output)
Initial soldiers: 6, your commander makes 7

Costs and effects of Level 0 buildings:
Merchant Stall: 75 gold, 3 crates, 3 people. One person turns 1 crate into 10 gold.
Merchant Hut: 250 gold, 5 crates, 5 people. Two people turn two crates into 25 gold.
Earthen Ramparts: 100 gold, 1 crate, 25 people. 30 HP.
Wooden Ramparts: 200 gold, 10 crates, 30 people. 50 HP.
Training Hut: 100 gold, 10 crates, 5 people.
Research Area: 100 gold, 5 crates, 3 people. Six people turn fifteen gold and three crates into 50 research points.
Farm: 20 gold, 1 crate, 5 people. 3 people produce 1 gold and 6 crates per day.
Windmill: 300 gold, 10 crates, 20 people. 5 people produce 3 gold and 10 crates per day.

Costs for level 0 military items:
Soldier: 50 gold and 5 crates. Permanent loss of 1 peasant.
Four-Sword: 6 gold and a crate. Research for half gold cost and bonuses.
Spear: 6 gold and a crate. Research for half gold cost and bonuses.
Bow: 6 gold and a crate. Research for half gold cost and bonuses.

Costs for level 0 research:
Four-Sword: 300 points
Bow: 300 points
Spear: 300 points
Level 1: 1000 points -100 for every level 0 research

Remember to buy maps from natives, ask questions everywhere (here especially), and wear sunscreen.

Crates are generally produced by Industrial buildings, although there are a few other methods.

2. do the crates build up over time or are they simply your industrial capacity in a given period, in other words use them or lose them?
Crates accumulate over time, but they're also consumed by construction, market and miscellaneous buildings, and your armies (under certain conditions). If you have enough of any resource (crates, people, gold), that resource will decay for a while.

3. is the industrial building specifically a farm or a windmill, or some sort of special industrial tech?
The buildings are the second Level 0 buildings (the windmill, wooden ramparts, or hut).

4. are you using clubs or something if you have no weapons research?
If you have the technology for a level, you can produce all of the items under that tech level. Researching something can give better prices and improves that item.

Cash. Lots of cash.

Bonus: Can i get horses?  if not i'll get sword.  i've now decided my people are communist AND cossack, so i might be a bit more militaristic.
Geography: mainland (this means coastal, yes?)

Description:  "Our soil is proudly stained with the blood of oppressors"

should have asked this before: do the merchant and industrial structures produce that much TOTAL, or for each person?  total seems better for most, except the windmill and merchant hut should have a better labor-efficiency to make the initial cost worthwhile.

With most of the worker-comrades hard at work with simple horticultural farming and foraging ("idle" my ass) Comrade Filburt has determined that enough Light Materials (we don't use gold remember) have been stockpiled to begin constructing a Merchant Stall.  Comrade Filburt and two volunteers begin gathering the construction materials and building the stall.  meanwhile another group of Worker-Comrades begin work on a Farm.  Comrade Nick and the Soldier-Comrades patrol the surrounding countryside, getting in some good training in stealth and wilderness skill.
