cool hydro for putting these ones up, i haven't seen these ones before, and u can see in the first one he walks on his hands and uses his "feet" as graspers, so cool.  Also, u can see that weird alien in one of the background shots from the GDC 05 video (he runs really fast and has 6 legs and 2 heads and 2 pairs of giant pincer things)  It looks kinda like the 3dsmax interface and trying to figure out animations or something...?
The last one looks like a fish man or something and you can see on the trees, in the first pic, the orange fruit is on the tree and in the next, it is on the ground, so i wonder if the trees like can lose their leaves and fruit or have seasons..

well this is a really early prototye, at least a year old. as for the fallen fruit, that would make sense as plants do spead thier seeds that way, but since its from over a year ago, we don't know if that will be implemented.

What's the word for when a particular feature develops independently in two seperate populations? I forgot, and now it's going to bug me all day.

Convergent evolution, maybe?

yes, it is convergent evolution, one example would be the tasmanian wolf and the typical wolf, they evolved for the same ecological niche but are totally different, there are more examples but I can't think of any right now.

its called a tasmanian tiger too by the way..lol (they are extinct now because of man)
I think a better example is the bat wings and birds wings, two similar structures evolving in two entirely different species.  Also the flying possum in Australia and flying squirrel in America (they don't actually fly, they glide), however, this is convergent evolution as well, two entirely separate species evolving similar traits.

Falling fruit would make a very good source of food for herb- and omnivores. I want forests/plants to have actual uses and benefits from lingering close to, rather than just existing. :D

;D Astounding stuff! These are some seriously overwhelming images. Thanks to all who found them!

The tortoise is pretty nifty. Maybe Maxis are kind of saying to the community that it's OK to make real-life things after all.....I'm still sticking to out-there zaniness, though. Walking on hands is awesome!

Only trouble is, they're Whose Line Is It Anyway points, which are infamously not worth anything.

There are heaps more prototype images on the powerpoint file.
I can't be bothered to extract them at this hour, but anyone who wants the .ppt file can PM me, and I will upload it on my site or something.

wonder what would happen if you made a creature with no mouth...  o.0   neither herbivore nor carnivore...

weird though it may seem, I hope we have the ability to make these kinds of dead-end mistakes.

no mouth = can't eat and dies
no graspers = can't use tools, can't evolve into civ
no limbs = limited movement (unless streamlined as a snake or eel is)

why cant they just give us the editor so when we are in da game e can load them up like will did in the gdc video no wasted time thinking what to make eh?

A couple of reasons.
The biggest is that of course the editor may not be ready yet. There'll still be a lot of development to do in the game, and it's unlikely that the editor will be finalised until close to the release date.
Secondly, if they release an editor now, many people might get bored after they find its limitations. Without the game to play it with, the editor will only be fun for a shortish period. If they release it early it will be close to the release date to offset this problem.
There are a few others, but those are the most important.
