2017 Election
« on: May 11, 2017, 10:54:04 am »
The Britbong one.

All us Eurotrash waded into the American election topics and oversimplified everything and made a mess so here is the chance for the Americatrash to get revenge. Ask the bongs anything you want about our election and speculate wildly about the results and implications.

Who is Russia's candidate?  Have any party leaders been photographed eating trash commoner food in a silly manner?  Does the Queen still get to give the losing party leaders a swift kick in the crown jewels, or has that tradition been phased out?

I think at this point both of the major parties are probably fine by Russia since the Tories will pursue a hard Brexit which will probably help weaken both the EU and Britain, but on the other hand they'd keep defense spending high and being best buds with Donald.

Labour would probably aim for more unity with Europe post Brexit but Corbyn is openly anti-nuclear and has suggested things like not putting nukes in our nuclear subs and so on so the Russians. He'd also probably be pretty devisive if he were by some miracle to win (In  Brnie Sanders way not a The Donald way) so the Rooskies would probably be happy for a slim chance of the UK going into meltdown for a bit.

Trash food: See above, the ciagrette and the special brew are shopped but the rest of the image is real.

The Queen's kicking has only got fiercer with age.

I heard on the radio today that Corbyn's party's secret manifesto was released and it talked about nationalizing industries and other fun stuff. Also one party leader's car ran over a reporter trying to get away from the press and another fell down a flight of stairs. The BBC reporter on NPR described it as "Veep" on steroids.
Probably not a Goat, either.

More to the point, the issue of nationalisation is mainly about railways. And for me, the comparison is between rail in countries with national/government led railways (i.e. Euroweenies) where the fares are cheap and the services actually work, compared to paying £40 to get to Nottingham from London and not even getting working WiFi (which you have to pay for). Nationalise these incompetent poobrain rail charters into oblivion, I say.

Leading country opinion ATM is "Corbyn is a big nasty red who wants to install gulag trains across the country, better vote for May who is a woman and therefore Thatcher :^)"

Yeah according to a Real CanadianTM I know, Trudeau talked big during the election had gave out a lot of positive vibes but he hasn't really been following through on most of the reforms he promised.

Soo... What do people see in the conservatives in UK? They seem silly to me.

(Or is it just that Labour has been so much crap for so long that no one can take them serious ether?)

I can't really shed light on either answer. Not even the people I know who used to vote Conservative like them any more or can give any explanation for their current behaviour.

I guess a lot of the people who love May and want Brexit are fixated on "Nationalist Common Sense" above everything else and take it for granted that regardless of any other factors, a country must be 100% self-sovereign and everyone should support their country's actions and achievements *because* it's the best country in the world (rather than thinking your country is the best *because* of its achievements)

May is not taking a page out of North Koreas book now is it? After all that is North Koreans whole national ideology. Be self sufficient no matter what.

I am guessing it is good old tribalism showing it head again. Politics is more like supporting a sports team now adays then actual politics. Hmm... Maybe if I start a party all my strategy should be taken from how to build up a strong supporter group rather then traditional politics...

Yeah basically between Brexit and Jeremy Corbyn Labour tribalism has been broken while the Conservatives can still rely a bit more on the tribal vote because it's basically only the better off urban Tories that didn't want Brexit to happen and most of the heartland Tory voters live in Hobbiton.

I'd say Trudeau is doing okay considering the amount of time he's been in office.

The big one that hurt him was electoral reform, which i agree needs to be done in both US and Canada... and the UK. FPTP is dumb and he's dumb for defending it. But otherwise he seems to be maintaining most of his word in a good way. Better than our **** show, or Britains, by ****ing far.

FPTP would be a good system if we got rid of political parties.
Political parties would be a good idea under a more proportional voting system.

Not surprising, seeing as (at least going by their strategy) the Tories have called this election pretty much just so they can lose it.

Which is a terrible plan because historically speaking stuff changes, therefore the anti-change conservative political factions always lose in the long term.

Which is why the Conservative Party mutates every 30 years to fit whatever ideas are in fashion. In the 1920s they were old school Imperialists, in the 1950s they were Keynsians, the 1980s Thatcherites, the 2010s they're slightly more socially progressive Thatcherites/posher Blairites.

Well it's been well known for years that Theresa May wants sweeping digital surveillance powers. When she was the Home Secretary she was behind the "Snooper's Charter". Unlike making the elderly and infirm sell their houses so they can buy precious fuel, this policy probably won't anger her base because most of them don't know how the internet works and those that do probably think its ok if everyone's emails are being read as long as it leads to some brown people being locked up.

Tessa was mad at Donny not because blabbing who the Manchester bomber was could hurt the investigation, but because it revealed that he was a jihadist that the UK foreign office had provided a "no questions asked" visa to go to Libya and help the 'insurgents'. He was in Libya, he was on the GCHQ watchlist and he was a repeat favourite on the anti-terrorism hotline - so why is Theresa looking for him on the internet?

Shutting down the internet is more important to Theresa May than stopping terrorism.

Gee that sure seemed reasonable and balanced until he only gave reasons why the EU is bad and absolutely no reasons why it might be good.

Like, if the only way to get out of a ****ty fisheries policy means also suddenly having to pay tarrifs to trade with the bloc that makes up 45% of our trade then maybe that's not a price worth paying.

Labour. I'm lucky to be in one of the few seats where Labour, Lib Dem and Greens all have a fairly equal chance, where the Tories have basically none (under 10k last election).

In any other election, I'd have done a proper analysis against the three. But this is the only chance to give May a bloody nose, and I want to leave her reeling even if she eventually wins.

My Facebook feed has been entirely Labour (with a couple being Green) and I think a lot of people are setting themselves up for disappointment. My one hope now is that the curtain has been pulled back on May to reveal she's a soulless automaton with no actual leadership skills, and that Labour don't have another civil war. Corbyn actually seems to care about other human beings and willing to listen.

Facebook feeds can be deceptive. There often echo chambers. I do hope that Labour do advance however.

Labour will win without a doubt if, and this is a big if, people go out and vote. The big reason why Brexit won was due young people staying home and not voting. And that was with a slim margin. Every vote counts and generally any vote not cast can pretty much be seen as support for conservatives. Same thing here in Sweden. When people do not go out and vote then conservatives wins. Because old conservatives always vote. always.

My one hope now is that the curtain has been pulled back on May to reveal she's a soulless automaton with no actual leadership skills, and that Labour don't have another civil war.

That's going to happen no matter what the results are. Corbyn could win a landslide and they'd still **** him over.

BOMBERGUY ELECTION SPECIAL

In the first five seconds of this video I decided that I like Hitler better than this guy and switched it off.

So explain again how Scotland is a country of decent liberal people and it's just the Englishmen at the border who might occasionally skew the results in the favour of the Tories?

Is Aberdeen on the border now? >_>

May will try to form a coalition with the DUP (right wing Northern Irish bastards) and rule with a tiny majority, but her party will probably be out for her blood and I can't see her approval rating go anywhere.

Corbyn and labour will try to make a bid for their own minority government but it seems unlikely that will happen.

It's also possible that there'll be another general election this year to iron things out. (LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL)

Boris would seem like a Machiavellian supergenius if he made a leadership bid now but there's plenty of the Tory party that doesn't like him.

Corbyn has a dead man's switch. If anyone tries to oust him that isn't a proper bleeding heart socialist then bang goes the youth vote, apathetic urban minorities and pacifists, Labour reverse all the 'uge gains they've made in this election and the whole infighting cycle starts again. Even the most rabid anti-Corbyn with an ounce of intelligence knows this.

I think the smart move for labour now would be to try and stack the shadow cabinet with more professional looking lawyer types like Keir Starmer and Emily Thornberry to sway the kind of soft tory voters that don't like austerity or hard Brexit but won't vote for someone who looks scruffy.

Sam's basically right. The party establishment might not like him but the supporters like him enough to feel motivated to go out in the rain to vote. That's probably worth putting off some swing voters.

The DUP are anti-Europe (Ie pro Brexit) BUT they want to keep a "frictionless border" between NI and the Republic of Ireland, which means unless RoI leaves the EU as well the DUP basically have to support a "soft" Brexit where freedom of movement is retained.

I think history will remember this as a series of the worst PMs this country has ever had.

Can't wait to see what stupid ass-backwards idea Boris implements in an attempt to improve his party's position at the expense of the rest of the country. Comedy comes in threes.

In other 2017 election news, Macron's brand new party is about to basically sweep the French Parliament?

And in the US, there's two races for governor this year, New Jersey and Virginia.  Virginia's the only one that will be competitive, and the primary is today.  it's kind of a repeat of the 2016 election.  The Democrats have an establishment candidate in Northam and a progressive candidate in Perriello.  The Republicans have an establishment candidate in Gillespie, a Trump wing candidate in Stewart, and a Jim Gilmore wing candidate in Wagner.

He's one of the dozens of candidates in the 2016 primary. Actually decently qualified and probably would have done a decent job, but never had a chance.
