Is there a key for the map somewhere? I want to know why there are different shades within some countries.

There is, but you're not going to like it...

Darker bits are irrelevant clay. Krais in Russia, territories in Canada and Australia.

Also that is the best basemap I've ever seen. Reminds me of the alternate history forum I'd go on with a map board containing hundreds of incrementally more detailed subdivision maps using the same projection.

Actually, that's where I got it. But it's the first time I've seen it with the EEZs included.

These are also from the same place, but no nifty EEZs: http://imgur.com/a/nh2Wn

Edit: The above series of map is one they call "Q-BAM." And I happened upon a thread where they are trying to make a version at 9x the resolution: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/the-m-bam-main-thread.376181/

Oh wow, I really don't!  Best I can tell, the different shades in Alaska, Russia, Australia and Greenland are for particularly empty areas.

The section on Alien Space Bats was particularly helpful.
Probably not a Goat, either.

Really, it's best to use a combo of Google Earth and Wikipedia instead of a legend. Too many things going on when you make a map of the whole world.

No wonder I was reminded of AH.net. I'm not even surprised you visit it.

They have a good flag thread, too, but now there's /r/vexillology.

Is it me or is it very common for nations to be coloured the same way on maps? I mean England tend to be red and French is Blue and Japan is often yellow. Or am I just imagining things?

No, it's pretty common. People often try to use colors most associated with nations they are meant for. But since a lot of nation are associated with the same (or very similar) colors, it's usually the "important" ones that get the colors. I mean, how many times have you seen the USSR represented as red?

Maybe they also stick with the pattern that they've already figured out works without having two nations next to each other with the same color?

I imagine it turns into a bit of a puzzle in some regions when you're only working with seven or eight colors.

Ideally, yes, but enclaves and exclaves don't play by those rules.
