"Dial-up Friendly" First Person Shooters?
« on: December 29, 2005, 06:18:49 pm »
Do you all know of any good, 'dial up friendly' first person shooters?
I, at the moment, am basically limited to fragging bots and the occasional lan. Now, don't start saying anything about "You should just get broadband", because you see, no one in my area offers broadband ;)

So, how about it? Do they exist beyond the occasional 1v1 non-rocket origional UT?

I use to play CS with diailup, worked fine until everyone else started getting broadband, then the pwnage began :(

there are a number of mmorpgs you can play with dial-up quite comfortably

TFC may still be dialup friendly...

Although since it was integrated into Steam its been kind of annoying...

Try it anyway, TFC is pretty good.

That is, Team Fortress Classic 1.5.

I feel I should expand my post just a bit.  Tribes 1 had some of the best network code around.  Dial-up users could play quite comforatably since there was very little information being sent back and forth.  The only trouble I ever had with dial-up was using the sniper rifle.  There was a slight delay between when you fired, and the signal caught up, so it was impossible to snipe accurately.  The rest of the game worked great.  I didn't have any problem fragging the broadband people.

I'm not sure if you can still find the original Tribes anywhere, but if you can it's definately worth it.

I will second the Tribes 1 recommendation.

It is not only a superb game, but you should be able to play it 56k if you can find yourself a copy of it.

That game is actually a lot of fun.

A friend introduced it to me and it is great!

Try:

*TFC
*CS
*Tribes 1
*Doom
*Duke Nukem

Either you need to get a second job, move out of the sticks, or get a roommate to split the bills. Broadband is a nessesity in gaming.

There are lots of older games you can play that people have already mentioned. The thing is... it's just not going to be fun for you in my opinion. You will spend probably 50% of the time dying and the other 50% of the time respawning. Okay, okay, i'm exaggerating. 45% of the time dying, 45% of the time respawning, and 10% of the time running around until someone notices you and kills you.  ;D

I know it may sound unfair, but I do believe that Dial-up users should be blocked from playing online games in today's gaming arena.  It can really kill the pace of a game when you've got someone lagging around the map or god forbid hosting.  I speak mainly for consoles.  I refuse to use ps2 online because they allow dial-up access.

I guess you could call me a snob for trying to keep the online gamespace pure.

however... The games mentioned earlier will not suffer through dialup.  Most of them are really old and were designed to work well at 56k.  Many games today are designed with Broadband in mind, and Dial-up users are just a thorn in the side.

It really really sucks that you live in an area that doesn't have broadband.  I hope the options open up to you soon.  There is one thing you could try if you are desperate for Broadband.  Verizon sells a Cellular modem that delivers 600Kbs bandwidth.  So as long as you have cell-phone access you can get broadband.  $70 a month though. (>_< ouch.)  And there's always satellite, but that's not optimal either.

You not think its a bit harsh to say that no 56kers can play online, when i played cs on 56k it wasnt an advantage.  They may lag a bit but we gotta love them anyway, some ppl cant get anything better for loads of different reasons.

Yes I do understand that not everyone has the means or opportunity to get broadband, and I do feel my opinion is harsh, and unfair.  But I do not like to play with "Laggerz"  <shrug>.  Hopefully someday soon, broadband will be cheap and available everywhere.
