Spore GDC - 10 Years Later

So it will soon be 10 years since Will Wright revealed Spore at GDC 2005.

How far have we come? How has Spore influenced us? And are the games of today as inspirational and hopeful as Spore was?

The demo, and then the time Robin Williams got to play with the creature creator.
Probably not a Goat, either.

well if you like building fantasy universes, I'd recommend doing it in the storytelling and roleplaying forum, since no one is really into the Spore forum any more

It really is amazing what Spore accomplished.  In the end, the game didn't live up to what we hoped it would be, but its real lasting legacy is the communities that it inspired.

Yeah, one of major communities that sprang up,speaking of which I remember coming here after seeing this site linked in one of Gamespot's Spore unions.

I was a mod at another spore forum.  First forum I ever joined.  Things were going fine, one of the other mods even went to that event for internet community members at Maxis HQ.  Hydro and I think LadyM went to it, too.  If he had declined, I guess I would've gotten the invitation.

And then the game came out.  We made all the creatures we had thought of over the years, but slowly realized that the game was a letdown.  One of the most active members had a breakdown.  He started yelling about how terrible the game was, and the years he had wasted waiting for it.  He begged the mods to ban him, but none of us wanted to.  We tried to calm him down but it just made him angrier, and he eventually just left on his own.  The forum died pretty soon after that.

Bad End.

This thread made me nostalgic and sad.
"If you put an infinite amount of monkeys in a room with computers, they would code Spore."
