i saw someone theorizing that the title "the force awakens" is sort of literal - the huge dearth of sith and jedi in the galaxy has reduced the number of outlets for the force, and in this movie there'll either be some really powerful force use, or a lot of randos inexplicably getting force powers

most likely not true (and uh, avatar did it!) but could be interesting
No way dude, you're trolling me.

I'm betting its some new wave force users like X-Men styles mutations coming out. (not actual mutations but force powers spontaneously showing themselves across a massive population )
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

I'm more interested in the political situation than the state of the Force.  The likely standings seem to be either the Empire is more or less in charge, it's a stalemate, or the Empire and Rebels/New Republic are both weak and most of the galaxy isn't with either side.  The former and the latter seem the most likely to me.  If the Rebels/New Republic were in charge, I don't think they would be talking about the events of the last movies as half forgotten legends.

On the Force side of things, Awakens implies that it's at least been dormant.  Last we saw in the movies, Luke was the only person left with any training.  And it looks like he's been slacking off this whole time.
Probably not a Goat, either.

my understanding is that the major antagonist force in this film is "the first order," which is supposed to be some kind of group based on the ideals of the empire

that to me implies the empire is either gone, or much diminished

It think the situation is like this, the death of the emperor has created a power vacuum that allowed a whole bunch of sith previously kept in check by the emperor to seize control (I'm thinking parallels with Hitler and his generals,it was suggested that they assassinate him early on in the war, until they realized that it would have  allowed someone more competent to take control)

I think the rebels will realize over the course of the film that blowing up the deathstar was the biggest mistake they could have made because now they are against a group that although  fractured and splintered has nothing to lose and will stop at nothing to defeat them (according the official website that planet in the new poster is weapon capable of taking out a star-system,far worse then a deathstar!

There would at least be more cursing and probably more Patton Oswalt.

Space Cop is supposed to come out early 2016, right?

We can just compare them.
Not a winner anymore.

I was really excited when the new trailer came out. Then i saw this lovely article which reminded me that on average Star Wars has not been a series made of good movies.

So now I'm relaxed again.
