SLINKY IS A DUMBBUTT

Alright, so, maybe you've all heard of this, but: SOLAR ROADWAYS.

Basically, two scientists have created durable solar panels that can be used to pave roads. And just think about how much pavement there is on the world! Anyway, they need money for their indiegogo campaign and I think this is a really huge deal.

I find it deeply suspicious that none of their donor perks include the panels.  A seven inch non-functioning replica is on the $1000 tier.  That...

That doesn't seem economically viable.

The main hurdle for solar energy is panel price, not durability.  Make solar shingles viable, then we'll talk about upping our Kardashev ranking.

They need constant servicing to remain at 100% power absorption. It's much more expensive to fix potholes, fissures, or broken panels. The creation of channels under the roads necessitates digging up the entire road, which isn't really feasible on a nationwide level/would be extremely expensive.

etc

I live in one of those places.

Ovi, let me tell you, it exists so much.
So much.

The irony of this plan is that the closer you travel to denser urban areas, the less useful the solar cells become due to building shadows and traffic.

Well, still, even if it was done in urban areas it would at least put a dent in fossil fuel consumption, I hope.

After going back and actually watching their video, I could see this kind of thing being installed in parking lots and maybe a few roads of businesses and cities that are trying really hard to be "green."  But to think that expensive glass bricks are going to become the standard paving material across the country is the kind of wild optimism detached from reality that makes for a great TED talk.

Well, it doesn't mean it can't happen, right?

I mean, if this thing can really produce 3x our used energy if fully installed, it would still cut that energy use in half if used on 1/6 of all the pavement. And if we combine that with the rooftops and sides of roads and sides of buildings, you never know, this could be really helpful.

When imagining some future plan or scenario, it's best to imagine what would be required to reach that point, as well as just its pros and cons. For one, keep in mind that the video claims these panels could produce 3x the energy consumption of the US if installed on every road. Everything from dirty trails in the middle of nowhere, to extremely busy and often congested highways in built up metropolitan areas. Just imagine the logistics of rebuilding all of those roads. Hell, imagine the logistics of rebuilding a third of those roads, or a sixth.

To be honest, that seems pretty smart too.

Well, one six of all those roads done over a long period of time (30, 40 years?) could definitely provide a LOT of clean energy and even when they're still in development, every bit counts.

Considering how length of construction (and the price tag) of the Big Dig, converting 1/6th of US's 4 million+ miles of roads in just 30-40 years seems pretty ambitious. I mean, we're not talking just repaving all these roads. They need to redo the entire road bed, replace entire electrical systems to replace pole, and some how deal with thing like water run off and drainage with all that stuff right below the road way. Also, how would it fair against things like flood, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.

Yeah, I don't really get why they combine something as ambitious as replacing all the roads with also replacing power cables and phone lines and stuff.

Yeah! My bedroom's in the attic, so it can get pretty warm here during the summer. I figure putting solar panels on the roof would help with keeping it a little bit cooler, while also generating electricity.
But trying to convince my parents is a bit difficult for some reason. My mom's mainly worried about whether it'll look ugly or not :/

To be fair, Massachusetts public works are pretty appalling in general.  And that's before you factor in that Boston roadways are a non-euclidean nightmare which resist all attempts at navigation and sanity.

Most of that time and money goes to the wizards and madmen keeping the elder things at bay.

Speaking of, how well do these tiles hold up against Shoggoths?

I like the over head solar panel tunnel. But that's not much different than the overhead wind turbine arches. Be interesting if the wind turbines where on the underside of the tunnel and the solar panels were on top. Then you could generate power from the wind the cars make in the tunnel and collect to solar power from the power above.

Thanks for that, Ulti.  Sometimes I like to see an idea or argument be thoroughly dismantled.

I still think these may see some small scale use.  A few trial runs in a Whole Foods parking lot or something.  Because practicality be damned, so long as it's Green.
