Wildstar
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:13:38 am »
Anyone planning on playing this? As some of you might know I used to do some pretty hardcore raiding in WoW for awhile, but stopped raiding when they made the dungeons completely mindlessly spamfests.

I know some of the people on the Wildstar team and I like a lot on what they are going to be doing on the raiding and dungeons ... basically making them super hard and rewarding guild play. This type of gaming isn't for everyone as hardcore raiding can make Dark Souls seem like playing an Atari 2600 game ... but I like it quite a bit.

If anyone is planning on playing in the open beta tomorrow let me know and we can hook up in the beta. A few of my old raiding friends are going to give this one a try and try to do some of the early bosses. Here is an idea of what to expect on the 1st dungeon boss ... it's just a touch harder than your standard WoW boss:

I'm giving the beta a shot.  I like the look of the combat system, but what really got my attention was the house building.  That's something I always loved back in SWG so I'd like to give it a try.  Not sure if I'll buy it though.  I have neither the time nor money for an MMO right now.

House building?

Hmm... when I played FFXI there was an event where the Moogle would tell you what your secret passion/title was. I was the only person I knew that got the title for spending more time gardening in my house than adventuring outside and gaining levels.

FFXI didn't last too long for me, though I really enjoyed the gardening and house stuff. Wish more MMOs would flesh out that kinda play to facilitate players like me. Star Citizen seems to be offering some options like this, which I like. How does this game stack up for people like me that aren't really interested in combat. I like to play a support role or, if possible, even run a shop. That is the MMO dream for me. Open a farm and sell my stuff to adventurers!!

I don't know really anything about the economy at this point, but they do seem to be putting a fair bit of work in the non-combat side of things.  Like I said, there's the house building.  I also recently found out that you can build fortresses with your guild, and gradually upgrade them.  They also have this interesting Path system in addition to the classic class setup of most RPGs.  Basically it's a special set of sidequests that you can get throughout your gameplay.  The two I've looked at is the Settler, who collects resources from throughout the world and uses them to build upgrades that benefit everyone, and the Explorer, who is presented challenges to get to interesting areas in the wilderness, negotiating platforming challenges to get there.

Since I posted this I've played around 75 hours of the game and have a fairly good idea of what it's going to be about. After playing WoW for 5k+ hours I can say that this is the the best MMO I've played since WoW. The house building engine is sick and gives you amazing freedom. The multiple avenues of play and mini-games throughout make side-games (crafting, exploring the map, reading the lore, etc.) actually fun and rewarding. The graphics are beautiful and look like a sci-fi version of WoW (not an accident). The PvP is varied and actually fun rather than oppressive. And the raids/dungeons are the best I've seen since WoW.

Usually when MMOs come out they always feel half finished or missing key areas of development. It makes sense as MMOs are just so insanely large it's impossible to get everything into the game and always somewhere something suffers. Usually it's the end-game content, which ends up in people playing the game, "finishing it", and then quitting since there is nothing to do.

Wildstar has so much end-game content only WoW comes close to the amount of stuff you can do at end-level. And the combat system is awesome, it's a great mix of MMOs in the past with MOBAs of today. I'm actually going to meet some of the devs in two weeks when I go to E3 so I'll get a even better idea of how the game is positioned going forward but it's a lot of fun with tons to do and pretty great story to boot.

I'm going to be on a PvP server (not sure which one yet) but I'll let people know. I was a pretty hard-core raider in the WoW days and will be doing end-game raiding (which is supposed to be crazy-hard, which is just where I like it) in this game if anyone is interested. This is the guild I have joined, they seem to be very organized and mature. http://gonws.enjin.com/

And for you Sim-fans out there, the housing is the best in-game housing I have ever seen. It's basically a mini 3d modeling program, it's pretty awesome. Here is Yogcast fooling around with the housing. There are 3 videos, the 1st is a bit slow but the others are funny and give you a better idea of what you can do:

Sorry to threadjack a bit, but are you going to have any news or content for us when you go to E3?  I remember you going to them in the past, but it's still really cool that you go.
Probably not a Goat, either.

Bleh... does Wildstar have anything for people that hate PvP? I mean, the house building sounds neat. I'll do that.

But I don't care about leveling up or building a fighting character. Is this MMO centered around combat?

No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.
