It's an indy Sim game.

Banished

Or city builder strategy. Whatever.

It's a colonial town builder. You start off with X amount of people, depending on difficulty, and you are put into a swath of untamed land. Survive, build, thrive.

Wood, stone, and iron are the main resources. Food as well, and firewood. You have to build their houses, farms, hunting cabins, storage areas, fisheries, tailor, blacksmitm, etc.

The tutorials are easy enough to follow and do a nice job.

Now, it has taken me a bit to get started since getting the hang of the mechanics (ie, schools to educate youth so they can do more than labor, cost me a generation), but overall I'm having a fun time.

I've tried jumping right in hard, but find I can't keep up with food requirements since I can't farm due to lack of seeds. My medium start is going well since I have decided large farms each year can ensure enough food rather than a slew of hunting and gathering lodges. Just need to somehow get a trade post in hard mode to get seeds before I reach critical mass. But I digress

The game has solid mechanics, and allows for some decent micromanaging. Figuring out how things work and what the best strategy you'll take up is a lot of fun.

Fires will end your map, though. Wells don't do **** or I can't figure it out idk yet,

It's pretty good. Watching a long pre-release let's play of it has made it too easy for me though, other than the damn fires. Had one take out my entire town because I build densely, noped and reloaded an earlier save.

As for food, basically all buildings will pull 1000 food when fully worked and optimal conditions. It's mostly a matter of space.

Time too. If you do it too much it starts to become less and less after a few years

For some reason I only realized a couple of days ago that this game was strategy and not some sort of RPG.

The title gave me the wrong impression I think. It felt like "Dishonored."

Gonna give it a whirl.

When I saw that article in my news feed I did a double take. What's so special about this (incredibly simple) city builder game that makes it news?

Apparently they have a section on indie games reviews.  I suspect it's a way for the writer to play through his steam games list and get paid for it, and Banished was the hot game of the week.

Yeah basically.

It gets hard to keep up with food once you boom to 90-120 people

Mostly because the agents are idiots. A starving laborer will walk halfway across the map for a designated task and die even if you've got food, and some homes will stockpile hundreds of food stocks while their neighbors all starve.

So I've got a town around 35 people at the moment, and I'm finding it pretty easy to keep a food reserve of about 10,000. Just rotate your crops every second year or so and production never drops. Gatherers produce an ungodly amount.

I expect him to add food spoiling, because it's a little silly that I have had baskets of potatoes in my barns for ten years.

Crop rotation isn't a thing BTW.

And yeah I've been in the 10k range and it still all comes crashing down past 70+ adults

Quote from: Banished Wiki
If the same crop is planted in the same farm year after year, that farm will have a much greater chance of being infected. So, it is important to rotate the crops being planted in farms so that the same crop is not harvested back to back. Also, crops of the same type in fields close together can spread the infestation, so be sure to separate crops of the same type.

Okay, I bought this game and I have been playing it. It's a lot of fun and I love the mechanics...

BUUUUUUUUUUT

This doesn't seem any more new or innovative than Caesar or Pharaoh. And if I'm being really honest with myself, those games have a lot more to offer. But I do like Banished, but now I'm playing Pharaoh with the Cleopatra expansion again instead. <_<

There... aren't many on the Workshop. D:

OH I FOUND THEM. Workshop through the Steam window shows very little. But in-game it's very robust.

Will look into mods.

The 2 best mods out there are the Fountain Mod (which is more than just fountains) and the Colonial Charter mod. Also there is a mod that adds bigger maps, more types of maps and more difficulty level choices, that's good.

Tried playing this again and came here to complain. Looks like my complaints are the same.

The game is shallow. Wat do?
