Dungeon World - Who wants to play a game?
« on: December 15, 2013, 06:42:07 am »
I recently discovered a pen and paper RPG called Dungeon World which has some pretty neat and very flexible rules. I'm going to have some free time on my hands over the Christmas break (most of it after Christmas itself) so I figure if there is interest here I will run a game or two.

From what I've read of the rules so far they're very simple so even if you've never played an RPG before you're welcome to join. Post in this thread if you're interested or have questions.

I'm interested. Are you doing it in the forum or irc? And also, is it sort of like the d20 ruleset or no?

It would be on IRC and it does not use the D20 system.

It uses a much more free-flowing system where most things are resolved by rolling two six sided dice. When I say free-flowing I mean it doesn't even have RPG mainstays like rolling for initiative or even a turn order in combat. It looks pretty great tbh.

That...that sounds really cool! You do live on the other side of the pond, though, so I assume that whenever you host it will be a much less convenient time here cause of time zone silliness...what time were you thinking?

I'm actually gonna be in Oregon over Christmas so that won't be so much of a problem for murrican players.

Yeah, I don't really like doing things that have rules and dice rolls play by post because things really tend to grind to a halt. Doing it over IRC also has the advantage of using a dice roller script.

What's the general setting for the game?  What would we need to do to write up a character?
Probably not a Goat, either.

Setting is generic fantasy. I'll probably just use bits of our existing forum setting because I'm lazy but no prior knowledge would be necessary.

To make a character, choose a class from bard, cleric, druid, fighter, paladin, ranger, thief, wizard, barbarian.

The game rules don't allow two of the same class in a party so pick something someone else hasn't already called dibs on. If someone takes one you really want then play rock paper scissors for it or something.

Make a post here reserving your class and then I'll go into the character creation process more (Spoiler: There's nothing to it, you just have to make a few small choices.)

Oh, word of warning, I'm going to be sticking to the letter of the rules in the book for this first time running the game and for some reason the book limits race by class (for example bards can only be human or elven, no dorf bards) so bear that in mind.

I call paladin if that's alright with everyone. If you really wanted it though, just say so and I'll take wizard.

I am ultimate super fighter!  Champion of the fight tournaments, and the greatest fighter to ever fight a fight contest!

On a side note, do you have the full rulebook somewhere for us to read it Sam?  They've got a bit of info in the character sheets on the website, but there's a lot that's unclear still.  Overall looks really neat so far.

I should mention that I will also not be available super often.

So my BARBARIAN is trapped inside an amulet that one of you is carrying (doesn't matter who). On occasion (when I am not too busy to play) my BARBARIAN bursts out from the amulet and is able to operate in the real world. Then when I have to go or when the session ends he goes back in.

Think of it like Jumanji. He hates it and never wants to go back but he always has to because he probably did something uncool to someone in the past.

I bought the rules PDF for ten bucks. I have no idea where you might find the full rules for free. If you've got the character sheets from the website http://www.dungeon-world.com/character-sheets/ then you've also seen the sheet of basic moves, which is pretty much everything you need (really, that's it). Maybe just ask me about what's unclear and I'll do my best to answer since I'm the GM.

I WANT TO BE DORF

DORF PALADIN

You failed basic reading comprehension so I'm going to have to decline to allow you to play at all.

It was a douchey old witch.

Sure. Basically I can't guarantee that everyone will actually get to play, but if you're all on 'standby' so to speak, then when I know when I'll be free to run a game I can give everyone notice and I'll run it with whoever can make it.

A character sheet template I quickly made. When you make your characters just use the character sheets from the link I gave above, then copy it out into a forum post here so they're in one place I can get to easily.

Come on, Sam, I was just asking. Keep in mind that when I'm GM with my group of players, I'm narrating the adventures of Jay Peto, Axis the Warlord of Chaos, Qweerbayte and Chuck. So I'm not really used to serious games. :P

Speaking of which, is this gonna be on a Saturday? Cause I have to GM on Saturdays.

EDIT: If it is, I can probably call my game off, but I'd like to know ahead of time.

Cool. If enough people post their characters then we might even be able to get a game in before Christmas.

Edit: Marty, in DW you add your entire constitution score to your starting HP. So yours should be 26 rather than 12.

Name: Solomon Tam
Look: Bulky body, so bulky in fact that he was given the nickname Big McLargehuge, although he abhors anyone who calls him that. Glorious mutton chops. Wears the symbol of Lilin, god of mercy.

Strength: 16 (+2)
Dexterity: 9 (+0)
Constitution: 12 (+0)
Intelligence: 15 (+1)
Wisdom: 8 (-1)
Charisma: 13 (+1)

Damage: 1d8 + 1

Bonds:
Casmus Weaver is a dick, but he can make one fine basket, I'll grant him that.

Grogi Dorfson is a brave soul, I have much to learn from them. Also, his beard is pretty bitchin'.

Gear:
Small 4" figurine of Lilin
Scale armor (2 armor, 3 weight)
Long sword (close, +1 damage, 1 weight) and shield (+1 armor, 2 weight)
Dungeon rations (1 weight) and healing potion (0 weight)

Starting Moves:

Lay on Hands (Cha)
When you touch someone, skin to skin, and pray for their well-being , roll+CHA. ✴On a 10+ you heal 1d8 damage or remove one disease. ✴On a 7–9, they are healed, but the damage or disease is transferred to you.

Armored
You ignore the clumsy tag on armor you wear.

I Am the Law
When you give an NPC an order based on your divine authority, roll+Cha. ✴On a 7+, they choose one:
•Do what you say
•Back away cautiously, then flee
•Attack you
✴On a 10+, you also take +1 forward against them. ✴On a miss, they do as they please and you take -1 forward against them.

Quest
When you dedicate yourself to a mission through prayer and ritual cleansing, state what you set out to do:
•Slay _______, a great blight on the land
•Defend _______ from the iniquities that beset them
•Discover the truth of _______

Then choose up to two boons:
•An unwavering sense of direction to _______.
•Invulnerability to _______ (e.g., edged weapons, fire, enchantment, etc.)
•A mark of divine authority
•Senses that pierce lies
•A voice that transcends language
•A freedom from hunger, thirst, and sleep

The GM will then tell you what vow or vows is required of you to maintain your blessing:
•Honor (forbidden: cowardly tactics and tricks)
•Temperance (forbidden: gluttony in food, drink, and pleasure of the flesh)
•Piety (required: observance of daily holy services)

A game is happening RIGHT NOW. So if you want to play get in the IRC channel (if you don't know how to do that check the chatroom topic in everything else)

Here's a guy I made. Hopefully I did everything right, but let me know since this is my first time.

Name: Oled Shurke
Look: Shifty eyes, hooded head, and dark clothes for the ultimate sneakery.

Strength: 8 (-1)
Dexterity: 16 (+2)
Constitution: 9 (+0)
Intelligence: 13 (+1)
Wisdom: 15 (+1)
Charisma: 12 (+0)

Damage: d8
Armour: Leather Armor +1

HP: Current [15], Max [15]

Alignment: [Chaotic] Leap into danger without a plan.
Race: [Human] You are a professional. When you spout lore or discern realities about criminal activities, take +1.

Bonds:
-

Gear:
Dungeon Rations (5 uses, 1 weight)
Leather Armor (1 armor, 1 weight)
Dagger (hand, 1 weight) and short sword (close, 1 weight)
3 Throwing Daggers (thrown, near, 0 weight)
Adventuring Gear (1 weight)
3 Oils of Tagit (applied): The target falls into a light sleep
10 Coins

Starting Moves:
Trap Expert:
When you spend a moment to survey a dangerous area, roll+DEX. *On a 10+, hold 3. *On a 7-9, hold 1. Spend your hold as you walk through the area to ask these questions:
  • Is there a trap here and if so, what activates it?
  • What does the trap do when activated?
  • What else is hidden here?

Tricks of the Trade:
When you pick locks or pockets or disable traps, roll+DEX. *On a 10+, you do it no problem. *On a 7-9, you still do it, but the GM will offer you two options between suspicion, danger, or cost.

Backstab:
When you attack a surprised or defenseless enemy with a melee weapon, you can choose to deal your damage or roll+DEX. *On a 10+ choose two. *On a 7-9 choose one.
  • You don’t get into melee with them
  • You deal your damage+1d6
  • You create an advantage, +1 forward to you or an ally acting on it
  • Reduce their armor by 1 until they repair it

Flexible Morals:
When someone tries to detect your alignment you can tell them any alignment you like.

Poisoner:
You’ve mastered the care and use of a poison. Choose a poison from the list below; that poison is no longer dangerous for you to use. You also start with three uses of the poison you choose. Whenever you have time to gather materials and a safe place to brew you can make three uses of the poison you choose for free. Note that some poisons are applied, meaning you have to carefully apply it to the target or something they eat or drink. Touch poisons just need to touch the target, they can even be used on the blade of a weapon.
Selected Oil of Tagit (applied): The target fells into a light sleep

Ok so it is now after Christmas and I'll be running more games. On any given day if enough people are around I might start around 4-5iss (West Coast time. I'm currently in Oregon). If you want to play be on steam or better yet, IRC around that time and let me know you're game.

So I've been playing dungeon world for the past couple of months, stuff happened and I need some new players.
We're starting a new campaign, already have 3-4 people so I don't really need anyone but it'd be nice.

We usually play on saturdays, starting around 5-8pm GMT / 12-3pm EST.
I'd like people who can reliably show up more than anything.

If you're up for it, just contact me on steam/skype, and if you don't have me on either just post here or PM me.
We're using roll20, using chat, not voice.
