I don't know if a game like that exists....
« on: March 28, 2005, 08:44:32 am »
Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum and I must admit that it's pretty good.... Steve is a great guy and I love is podcasts....Steve made me discover and love podcasts...thank you
Theres a game that I always dream off and I don't know if it exists... I like strategy game with a lot of politics... I would like a game where you can control your people and you could decide what kind of idealogy you want (communism, socialism, capitalism...ect) A game where every action has a consequence on my people...that would be pretty neat. Not a game like SimCity where I can construct but theres no politic... Also I played a lot the game Tropico wich is a game with politics but still it's not enough.

Civilization 3 or Civilization: Call To Power allow you to change your country's politics to very different things like Communism, Monarchies, Capitalist, Fascist etc.  but it isn't very in-depth i'm afraid.  That's really the only game(s) i can think about with that sort of feature...

Well, if you like politics then you might like  the free online game, Nation States. The game is fun, but really isn't very in depth.

Nation States is pretty fun, but gets boring after 2 weeks or so because it ends up becoming more of a chore than anything else.

I've had two nations over the past, each lasted about a month.

It's more about power politics and international affairs, but Shaddow President can give you the trappings of a political game, if not the ideological-basis you seem to be looking for. Maybe Superpower as well, but that got really terrible reviews.  Victoria probably has the most political options of any game I can think of, but it's fundamentally a war and empire building game.

I love these large-scale, big issue sims, seems to be a small market though.

I've played Tropico at a friend's place and I'll admit I had fun with it but the pacing wasn't really my style.

Very high quality production though and my friend spent hours on it.

I got Tropico not too long ago, it was fun. However it was one of those games that once you got going it was really hard to make progress. Kinda like Settlers.

Like Civ 3, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri lets you play around somewhat with politics and people management but it's on a much more abstract stage than something like Tropico.  My friend says that Master of Orion 3 deals a lot with politics but I haven't heard much great about it.  Hope you find something.  -leeman

I played the demo of Republic. It seemed cool, but I can see why it got bad reviews: it plays more like a board game than a computer game. It's quite slow and methodical, nothing about it is particularly spectacular (which is a feeling video games try to capture much more than board games ;)) except for the depth it seemed to have. It's also really menu-intensive, in a pretty bad way... but the game's not designed to be rapid-paced to begin with, so whatever :D. Still, when I read this topic I instantly thought of this game, but decided not to post because I don't think the player can choose different forms of government while playing... and that seemed important. *shrug*

Might as well d/l the demo. :)

thanks for all you interesting comments. I was surfing on the net and I discovered a new free political game. It's called A Force More Powerful. This game will come out in September.
Quote
While A Force More Powerful sounds like a more sophisticated version of political entertainment games such as Tropico, where players impersonate a dictator, or Revolution, where they try to overthrow one, what makes this design unique is its emphasis on methodical military-style planning. Indeed, the process resembles how U.S. military commanders war game a situation by considering various alternatives and their consequences.

This game will be non-violent and it wil have a lot of possibilities. Check out the web site http://www.breakawaygames.com/news/2005/strategic_nonviolence.html
By the way, the game is made by BreakAway Games, they already did tropico paradise island expansion.

Try out some of those games, maybe one will be like that. I've actually been looking for similar games with little success.
