Space Station 13
« on: May 29, 2013, 06:09:24 am »

Space Station 13 is a science fiction roleplaying game where you are a crewmember on an advanced research space station where various disasters take place. It is a very detailed simulation where the various subsystems of the station can interact to produce fun situations. You start the game as one of dozens of of specific station crew, like engineer, miner, security officer, cook, and scientist. You attempt to perform your duty as various disasters afflict the station, such as meteor strikes, alien invasion, or rogue AI. Crew members can also start as traitors, who must use their station job to accomplish certain sabotage tasks and escape alive.

For example, I could start as atmospherics technician, whose job it is to maintain a breathable atmosphere on the station. I turn out to be a traitor, whose job it is to kill the Head of Security. As atmospherics technician, I have access to the Security atmospherics station and all their maintenance tunnels. I could flood the security wing with anesthetics, knocking out all security personnel.  Then I could hack my way into security via a maintenance tunnel, while wearing a gas mask, find the head of security, and casually strip him throw him out an airlock. Since all of this would naturally implicate me as the traitor, I would be obliged to further wreck the station to force the call of the Emergency shuttle, in order to escape the station on the shuttle or on an escape pod, before security could get its act together and find me. If I successfully do all of this, I will be a successful traitor.

If all of this interests you, here is how you get into the game.

First, you need to sign up for and download BYOND, the engine the game uses. Link.

Then, you merely need to find a server that you can play on. BYOND has a server listing for Space Station 13 that you can select from, however they vary wildly in quality. You copy and paste the URL of the server into the BYOND client. All the game files are then automatically downloaded for you from the server.

/tg/station is a quality one, when it's working.

Here is a direct link to /tg/'s Temporary station. Which is in use while the other servers get fixed. This will be shut off by the end of the month.

Finally, you want to learn how to play the game. The wiki site has a lot of information about the game in general, however every server is slightly different, since they all maintain their own branch of code. That wiki is mainly for the /tg/station branch of the game. This goonwiki contains much of the same information, as well as specifics to the Goonstation branch of the code.

Before you enter a game, take a moment to customize your character and your job preferences. This lets you carefully explore the same role over multiple games, and lets you avoid some complicated roles that you may be inexperienced with for some time. Also, it allows you to turn on and off the possibility that you turn out to be a traitor or other disaster role. You may want to avoid those roles until you have enough experience with the roles to be an effective saboteur.

Have fun, and I'll see you around the station! :)

this game is pretty great, it has that sort of dorf fortress complexity to it so its almost designed to create stories of 'that one game you had'
except its multiplayer, so a lot of crazy things usually happen at once making almost every game really chaotic.

also this is what got me interested when i first started playing

It should be noted that the tg-station code branch does not have butt-bots, the ability to cut off butts, or poop.

It does however have a cultist game mode and two maps which are both better than Goonstation.

Yeah the wiki is more of a reference than an actual exhaustive guide. Best bet is to bug Celdur  until he explains how it works.

i found **** out on my own too, its not too hard.

just go to the starter guide on the wiki, and follow that. it explains the game and the pretty awkward controls
then, when you're assigned an actual job, just look up that job on the wiki and it explains everything you need to know.
thats how i went though pretty much every job on the station. dont pick any leader rolls until you know what the **** you're doing though.

and if you dont feel like learning all this autistic ****, just become a mime or clown or librarian or whatever, and go **** with the autistic people that try to keep the station from not exploding.

This would be nice. Be given time to figure **** out instead of having an actual round or something where OMG it's over in like ten minutes and nothing got done.

If its over in ten minutes it was either Nukops or a really ****ty Wizard. Just wait for the next game to roll around and hope it lasts longer.

Having a safe place to learn is the antithesis of what SS13 is about!

If you've already got to grips with the controls and spent a round or two blundering around as an assistant, go to your career preferences and enable a career where you do stuff, but there are no particularly bad consequences for failure.

I recommend Botanist, Bartender, Chef, Janitor or Chemist (slightly harder). Open the relevant page on the wiki and experiment. I guarantee just trying to do your job will teach you a bunch of stuff about the games clunktastic interface, and just hanging around on the station will let you pick up a lot of stuff by osmosis. If you're happy/bored with that just start enabling jobs you think look interesting.

If anyone IC gives you a hard time for sucking just say its your first day at the job (in character). If they give you a hard time out of character then they are jerks and you can pity their sad, unfulfilling lives.

sec is greifing they cuff me cus i made acid grenads lol

Those have been my general rounds. They're usually over because of sheer incompetence. Had one round where the freaking traitor Captain just armored up, whipped out a sword, and started sticking it up everyone's ass. Then screwed the station over and left. He was called Ken Adams and spoke only in Caps.

The only somewhat good round I've had was as a Medical Doctor under this CMO who actually knew what the hell he was doing, could even perform surgery, and I got to witness a brain surgery because of that. Also learned a fair bit about medical treatment, cryo, sleeper, cloning, morgue, and so on. Also had a virologist who knew what the hell he was doing and managed to whip up a virus that nullified our needs to breath and eat. Consequently, we spread it to all the patients who spread it around the station. All without their permission of course.

And that's been the only round where I had any fun.

Oh, here's a protip for anyone playing SS13 for the first time.

The station AI is obliged to fulfill any inane request you have as long as it does not result in a human being coming to harm. This includes opening doors which you don't have access for, or just asking it questions about stuff. Talk over the radio (type "say ;[what you want to say]) and address your statement to the AI and as long as the player isn't otherwise occupied they will do as you ask.

Edit: Playing on the unofficial tg server right now if anyone cares to join.

What server were you on Cobra? Sounds griefy to me.

Also, Lego's post in the KSP thread reminded me of something that happened yesterday.
I started the round as the AI, nothing of interest really happens for a while. Looks like the antag is cultists. They teleport a wraith into the core and kill me (way too easy for cult to do that, there should be some additional precaution against it). So I spend some time farting around as a ghost, until I get a request to be someone's personal AI.

So I do that and use my go-to pAI name of Lil' Hal .
My master regretfully informs me he is not called Dave. I say I can call him Dave if he likes. He says yes. I do so.

Nar Sie is summoned. But the shuttle arrives shortly! There's still a chance. "Head for the shuttle Dave".
As he runs for the shuttle Nar Sie trashes the station and the floor plating where 'Dave' is heading disappears and he finds himself floating in space. Despite valiantly trying to propel himself toward the shuttle with a fire extinguisher, the pull of the void is too much for him.

"Goodbye Dave."

Cult Win.

So far I've played part of a round as an assistant, 4 minutes as a cargo tech at the end of a round, and started a round as a geneticist for ~1 hour. I managed to become blind and deaf and irradiated. Nothing much other than that happened.

According to the wiki, gungnir, you got to make sure the 14th box in the DNA scanner thing isn't over 800 in terms of hexadecimal number or else it's a monkey SE.

And how would being a pAI be enjoyable?

Well you're not dead any more, for a start, which is better than nothing.

You also get to have banter with your master and others, roleplay a PDA buddy, and occasionally even do useful stuff like jack into doors or look up stuff on the crew manifests while your master is busy welding people into lockers and pushing them out of airlocks.

This genetics update randomized which block was which. In this case, it was the 8th block that had to be below 800. There was another reason I was confused though.

I took the SEs from a human, but apparently there were two syringes already on the machine, so when I grabbed the one on top, it was from a monkey. The human SE syringe was put in the back of the stack.

I managed to pick up my ID card and run around the med bay pointing at it until someone helped me out.

Nope. They are primarilly intended as a personality-simulator and have freedom to act as a human would. Of course their modes of interaction are very limited.

So, I found out a neat trick recently.  Apparently if you attack people with bottles filled with something, they smash over the other person's head, knocking them down, and instantly administering the reagent.  So I've taken to carrying around two bottles filled with 100u of Potassium and 100u of Water respectively, for insta-gibbing fun.
