2012 Olympics: Thread of Champions
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:45:41 pm »
The Olympics are awesome!  So let's have a thread about it.  Brag about your country! Trash talk other countries! Trash talk your own country!  If you're brave, actually talk about sports!

Medal Count Here:

An opportunity to get a couple of hundred thousand people and dignitaries from around the world into one building under the close supervision of police and shell-shocked Afghanistan veterans.

Bits of it were ok, but some bits were cringe enducing.

The entire bit with the extremely photogenic multicultural yoof losing their phones was just dire.

Using Rowan Atkinson and Daniel Craig was a stroke of genius, though.

"Oh, she lost her phone. Better call her to tell her that."

Fun fact: She answered.

Yes, I noticed that too.

I can only assume its because kids these days all have two mobile phones.

On a munch better note, did anyone notice that when the nations athletes were all walking out, as soon as Fiji came on they started playing "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees?

I'm fairly certain it was intentional as well, since all the songs were usually played out in full, except the one immediately preceding the Bee Gees (IIRC it was Rolling in the Deep) which was cut off as soon as Fiji walked out of the tunnel and onto the track.

So Women's Weightlifting was all "Yeah we could win! We just need to try hard and we could outdo everyone!". Then China shows up and "BOOM GOLD I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE WHAT IS PAIN?".

I'm sensing a pattern here.

I love that they're showing archery live on tv.  I wish all the air time didn't go to basketball and soccer, I want to watch the more obscure stuff.

I watched the Opening Ceremony in the most dignified of places - barefoot in a fountain. We missed most of the first hour because of food and getting distracted by buskers.

So GBR won three gold medals in the athletics yesterday.

Despite my own skepticism and that of many others in the runup to the olympics I have to say this is turning out pretty well.

The stadium was finished on time, the opening ceremony was only slightly embarrassing, and britain is doing better than anybody could have expected.

U mad bronzefags?
