Official Game of the Year thread 2011
« on: December 01, 2011, 06:55:25 am »
So now that you've all had a chance to play the major releases this year, we have one month in which to decide on the Game of the Year.

Since it's only the first of December and we have plenty of time to bicker before we have to come to some kind of consensus, I'm going to throw open the floor to nominations from anyone and everyone. Except you, spambots. You know who you are.

So throw up your picks and we can start arguing straight away!

/lurk's picks: Bastion, The Binding of Isaac, Pokémon Black & White

Bastion is a brilliant for totally different reasons than The Binding of Isaac, although one thing they have in common is that they both have really solid aesthetics. Either one is unmistakeable from other games, and the detail that went into the artwork (and sound, for Bastion) lends a lot to their appeal (although perhaps more so in Bastion's case, since Isaac has roguelike-compulsiveness in place of a detailed narrative.) You should have played them both already anyway, so you should know what I'm talking about.

Pokémon is the game that I think I've played most of this year, going by Steam stats and the hour counter on the cartridge. It's Pokémon! That formula was pefect in 1998 and has only got better since then.

/lurk's honourable mentions: SpaceChem (came out January 1st!:) The feeling I get when I see my reactor working perfectly is divine, and yet it always ends up in the least efficient 10% of all the reactors that do the same thing. I really wish I was good enough to play more of this, but it's proper bastard hard and I always seem to give up after a few hours. It deserves to be a much bigger success than it currently is, considering it's somewhat educational (it's licensed free to schools) and that the guy behind is is the guy who invented Infiniminer, before Notch copied the formula to become a millionaire - but that's beside the point that this is a good game in its own right.

Chantelise: I don't care what you think I loved it SO THERE. But admitedly it is ultimately a lesser game than Recettear (which is more or less up against Mario Galaxy 2 for 2010's GOTY)

Okay now FIGHT

Not a winner anymore.

Magicka and Portal 2.

Also, wouldn't technically Minecraft count too, considering it has finally left beta stage this year? :V

Everything sucks. 2011 is a horrible year for gaming. Picking the best game of any game this year is like picking the least foul corn kernel from atop a mountain of feces.

My game of the year for 2011 so far... hm.

I need some more time to play Batman. Otherwise I'm thinking it might be Bastion or possibly Portal. Dunno. Honestly the best thing I played so far this year was that Stanley Parable mod for Half-Life 2. Does that count? If so, that's my choice unless Batman is jesus.

I HATE YOU HATE YOU HATE YOU HATE YOU

I suppose Minecraft was technically released this year, but all that really means is that it got worse.

I don't think Bastion is GotY material. It was fun, sure, but I felt like it was missing somthing. I suppose its simplicity is a large part of the attraction but I didn't feel there was enough there to really seize my imagination.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Seems like this year I'm picking a GOTY by default. :-\

The things I need to try out are Batman and the new Mario on the 3DS. Both of those seem really solid and potentials for my GOTY.

I haven't got around to playing Bastion yet, though I feel this way about Binding of Isaac, which after the initial novelty wears off, is just a bland grind for item discovery. There isn't really anything I can think of that is outstanding...

The first 4/5ths of the Witcher 2. All's great till the end.

But Dark Souls is probably my GOTY.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.
