The Binding of Isaac
« on: November 27, 2011, 10:39:39 am »
Wiki / Steam

Anyone else finding this game incredibly addictive? It's a procedurally generated top down dungeon crawler dealy, with a ton of unique items and permadeath. It's also very strange, with lots of Christian references (if the name didn't tell you that) and horrifying monsters.

No way dude, you're trolling me.

It also encourages replaying the game, since it'll take quite a few replays to unlock everything.
But yeah, very addicting, very fun.

EDIT: Oh, another fun thing: Almost every upgrade you pick up changes your appearance. You rarely look the same way each playthrough.

FINALLY there's a thread about this. I was wondering if I'd have to make one myself.

But now Didero's beaten Satan I have to beat him again as someone else if I want to stay ahead of him. None of you other jokers are anywhere near our level. Unless you are and you're not my steam friend so I can't monitor your stats in order to compete with you.

Edit: Adding Tesla to my steam friends so that I be alwayswatching his BoI stats (see wut I did thur.) I will monitor your progress WITH INTEREST.

Cain is by far the easiest to play, for me. The Lucky Foot helps with random pill pickups and chances of winning in Arcades. I also think it increases the chances of a random item pickup like coins or bombs dropping when you clear a room. Plus he's fast and powerful, and if you can use that properly his low health isn't that big of a problem.

I also tried beating Sheol with Isaac, but that's quite a bit harder. Though the D6 is fun to use.

Also, on one attempt this weekend I found a Dr. Fetus. It's a great upgrade, even if it is far too easy to hurt yourself too. Of course that run ended when I blew myself up :P

And if you don't care about spoilers and finding out what each item/card does on your own, this item list is indispensable.

I've beaten satan, but my achievements don't seem to want to unlock for anything I do in the game. :P

I got the Doctor Foetus powerup and effortlessly blasted through to satan.

Then I used my Bible.

Using the Bible while fighting Satan instakills YOU.

Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Explore everything (at least for the first few floors), make sure you keep a key for the Item Room (the golden door), learn where the secret rooms are most likely to be. But most of all it's practise, I guess. Learn the enemies and how to best handle them.

Practice and finding the Doctor Fetus powerup in the first room, yeah*.

Also 2-3 copies of the Sun arcana wouldn't hurt.

I didn't even win the time that happened. Stupid Satan.

I think the Brimstone powerup is my favorite.  Sure, you have to give up a heart or two to get it, but it's always worth it.  It replaces your tears with a huge mouth laser, but it can only fire if you charge it up all the way.  It takes getting used to, but it can instakill almost every non-boss enemy, and even some of the bosses in two or three.  I think I've won 90% of the time I got the Brimstone.  The only time I didn't was when I also had a powerup that reduced my firing rate, which made the time it takes to charge the laser really long.  Good game.  But the difficulty is random, because it's based on the powerups and items you get.

People getting stuck on the first few floors are probably missing some of the game's base rules.
Every floor has a golden room that has an item in it. The first level's golden room doesn't need a key to open, whereas the others do. Every end-level boss you defeat also drops an item. If you don't pick up these items then you're really shooting yourself in the foot, as far as survival goes. Save your coins until you have 15, before you visit the shop, as that is the upper price level for the good items. In a pinch, bomb the slot machines, beggars, health draining machines and arcade vendors for a few random coins/hearts/bombs/keys. If you have a surplus of coins, try donating to the beggar a few times, as he will give you something in return. Sometimes just something small, but the more you spend, the more likely he is to drop an item (map/compass/food/other minor item). The vending machines, when played repeatedly, will also explode of their own accord, sometimes leaving a minor item, and other times giving you a dollar bill (100 coins). If you have a full-health pill or a lot of hearts laying around in finished rooms, trade your health for cash at the machine repeatedly, and eventually it will explode leaving a health-based item behind, normally a blood-bag which is pretty damn awesome. Stones can be bombed over gaps to create bridges in a pinch, too.

Also, don't be too reckless. I can see how an impatient gamer would happily waltz into the bullets out of aggressive habit, but evasion is the biggest part of this game. If you're having real trouble, play the first level until you get your golden-room item, and if you feel it to be useless, restart. Repeat this until you get good golden room and bossroom drops. If you're having trouble surviving, avoid making deals with the devil, as those extra max hearts are often not worth the small boosts in power.

Giving money to those little beggars is usually a good idea. You can almost always get an upgrade for cheaper than it would be to buy it from a store. The upgrade is random though, so if you've got very little money, hanging onto that may be a better idea.

And boy was it satisfying.

Also, I love just how many powerups you get by the end. You're a friggin' mutant.
