The Softboiled SciFi RP

Greetings [TEAM NAME HERE]!! I hope you've had a pleasant trip on board the [SHIP NAME HERE]. We apologize for any inconvenience. While we take the utmost time in preparing ships for our teams, sometimes some things can fall through the cracks. Remember, as a member of the PanCeles Mercenary Corporation, it is your job to ensure the safety of our clients and their personnel. And that means having access to the best of the best. If you have any complaints, contact your coordinator at [TM CONTACT HERE].

Now then, with that out of the way let's get down to brass tacks and discuss the next mission.
[MISSION DATA HERE]

Good luck out there team! Hopefully you understand what needs to be done.
Make us proud and come home safe!!

"Best of the best my ass!"

A rough and tumble looking man blinked a few times and turned away from an aging command console. He slowly peered around the room at the others who were on the bridge and rummaged around in his vest until he was able to produce a print out.

"Right... for the eyes of Captain Jim Stoddard only... blah blah blah... yeah okay. Right then. Okay guys, we're landing on the planet Kton-4. It's mostly covered in salty water. Says here it's like bath water and there's sun almost all year round. There are no less than six hundred resorts across its surface and several large urban centers. Yeah... hm... okay! We'll be heading into the Kton's largest city, Aquarius. Clever name... anyway, seems the local prison had a bit of a break and there's a bunch of hooligans holed up in a chemical research lab a few miles south. They're armed with homemade shivs and possibly non-lethal weapons taken from guards. Should be a simple operation. Sweep in, mop up the idiots, and then go relax on the beach and ride jet skis. Any questions?"

"Good!" Captain Jim answered before anyone else had the time, then turned around and looked back at his console. "Make sure everyone on board gets word. We'll be landing outside the chemical facility in a half hour. You're all pros, we don't need a hardcore brief on this. All you need to know is that we're going in hot, so be ready. Maps, prisoner bios, and other metrics are being sent to your PDAs... now."

Standing off to the side of the bridge, James' PDA received the data with a faint buzz.  Taking it from his pocket, he began pouring over the data.  Simple as the job may have seemed, it was foolish to go into a fight unprepared, and especially foolish to underestimate the determination of loose convicts.  He also didn't like the fact that they were holed up in a chem facility.  There was no telling what sort of junk they had managed to get their hands on in there.  He'd have to make sure his medkit was properly stocked on the way in.

"Captain." he called out as his eyes continued scanning blueprints of the facility.  "What are our rules of engagement?  Are we taking them back intact or are we clear to use lethal force?"

Jim furrowed his brow and looked over at James.

"Ah... try to keep them in one piece. A bunch of them are from a psych ward. Pretty messed up... but they've undergone some treatments to fix their problems. The wonders of modern medicine or something like that. Our brief says some have gotten more treatments than others and might not even want to be there. So just keep an eye out."

Moe I. Mason performed the Scopulan equivalent of a sigh, which came out as a human sigh when run through his custom-built translator. His silicon-based biology made him resemble a large smooth boulder with eyes, although cybernetic arms had been attached to his body by himself. Moe grew up on his homeworld of Murexion for 3,999,973 Earth years until he decided to go seek out adventures among the humans. So far it wasn't looking good, as his job hunting on the human colony of Kton-4 had landed him work as a chemist, which was the very position that he had back on Murexion.

The facility was horrendously understaffed, of course. Why else would he be relegated to janitorial duty for the time being? The dirty bipedal fluid sacks thought it funny to joke about his body being used as a polisher for the floors - never mind that it worked so well you could see your reflection in it! Moe had traveled so far to interact with those beings, but expected slightly more thrilling escapades than cleaning up linoleum. I suppose I got just what I wished for, he gloomily pondered.

Without warning, a group of scruffy humans burst into the hallway! Startled by the sight of a living rock with robot arms, they hastily raised a variety of crude, improvised weapons in self-defense.

"Hey, uh - rock! If you can unnerstan' me, we're - we're takin' over this place, see?" Their bearded leader proclaimed. Moe responded, "Oh, I don't bother. You're the most excitement I've had on this backwater world since I chased around a butterfly. But continue to track the carbon gunk from your boots all over these floors I worked so hard to maintain, and your spines will serve as measurement scales for my precise body weight on this planet!"

The hooligans were visibly disturbed by that prospect, and decided to retreat back into the corridor they came from. Moe, not one to turn down the offer of real adventure, decided to follow. After all, what could a few knives do to him?
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

The blue humanoid lizard stood near the front of the bridge, paying full attention to the mission at hand. No one could say he didn't listen, that was for sure. Kryyzen laughed silently to himself as Jim explained the mission at hand. Put down a prison riot? Hand made shivs? This was rookie work, not worthy of someone of his skills and expertise. Though, a vacation did sound nice, a life of running did get quite tiresome after all.

As he listened to Jim and Jame's conversation, Kryyzen's bright yellow eyes narrowed sharply, "Of course captain, I will be most careful in my approach." He flashed a toothy grin towards the man as he inspected his blade-like claws innocently.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

Sauls was lounging in one of the bridge chairs, absent-mindedly fiddling with his pistol as he listened to the Captain and everyone else. It annoyed him that they couldn't just waste the prisoners, mentally damaged or not. Non-lethal was often too much trouble in a mission, and it wasn't as if the prisoners were high value targets. Though, the Captain said keep them in one piece, but didn't say don't shoot them in the knee...

He chose to remain quiet and continue messing with his pistol while he considered the mission, Nutty prisoners with handmade weapons, not particularly a problem... Nutty prisoners in a chemical research facility, with access to possibly toxic and explosive chemicals, probably a problem. He holstered his pistol away and leaned forward, "I think it might be best to go in with chem gear, gas masks, the works. We don't know what the hell is in that facility, it could be nerve gas, it could be volatile explosives. I'm betting the majority of these prisoners have no idea what they might be tampering with, and all it takes is one moron cracking open the wrong container to cause a lot of trouble. Other than that, it's probably a good idea to watch what we shoot as well..."

"That sounds like a solid idea."

Jim removed the mission brief from his pocket and made a small note in the margin. He had caught a lot of crap over his career concerning his laid-back approach. But his success rate spoke for itself. In his mind, he was only as good as his team, so he made a point to give a general outline of an upcoming mission and allowed the others to fill in the gaps as they saw fit. If the plan was inadequate when it came time to execute, he would address what needed to be addressed. But letting the team work out the plan themselves tended to give the group ownership over their tactics and helped boost morale a bit.

"Yeah if we need to, take 'em out at the knees or something. We only need them alive." Jim said before grinning, "And that way we're not shooting at beaker level where we could release the zombie apocalypse virus or something."

"So, who gave us this job? Local law enforcement, or the lab? 'Cause I'm seeing a lot of classified areas on this map." Andyne was leaning against the door to the bridge. "Also, should I get someone to see what sonic weapons we have? Some screamers or nauseators could come in handy. They're not liable to break anything either."

"Local law enforcement. Seems there are a few lizard frea- I mean Draaks in the group of escapees and they don't want to be held responsible if things go south. Kton-4 is full of hippies and other whiners that are all uptight about Draak mistreatment. The law wants to be as far removed from this operation as possible. The facility is a private one and the full map was given on a need-to-know basis. Seems there are some things we don't need to know. Who knew? Oh, yeah the prisoners are all humanoid so it's not hard to line up non-lethal shots. Just try not to hurt the Draaks too bad."

Kryyzen, slightly irked by the captains term of lizard freak, smirked, "Draak mistreatment? Pah, if they feel as such they should leave or rise against it rather than just simply complain. These Draak that allow themselves to be dominated deserve no pity, and I cannot say I will show them any." His blue scales flashed as he moved in and out of the lights in the bridge as he approached the captain.

As he walked he merely whispered and shook his head, "Oh captain, my captain," he then held up a clawed hand aimed towards his throat, "if you would be so kind as to hold on the insults. Hunted I may be, but Draak I still am."

Kryyzen felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Easy there," Otto said in a gentle manner, trying to disarm the situation. "He is the captain after all, even if he is a giant racist." Otto made the joke half-heartedly as he took his hand off the lizard man's shoulder.

"I agree with the basis of the plan, though," Otto said as he leaned back against a nearby wall. "Everyone will need to be on guard given the facility. Don't especially like that we only know certain areas of the base. Do they know for sure that the convicts haven't gotten into those areas?" Otto's stomach lurched a bit.

Damn burrito, he thought.

"This is all I've been told." the Captain answered, smirking and turning to Kryyzen. "And I'm sorry if I offended you, scales. We're all a bunch of freaks here. I shouldn't have singled you out."

The ship shuddered a bit as it entered the atmosphere of Kton-4. Heavy metal shields slid down over the bridge's windows and the monitors instructed everyone that wasn't already seated to find some place quickly.

"Remember guys, we're landing on a pad at the facility. That gives us about ten minutes. Plan seems good so everyone get ready to do what you do. If there are any last questions now's your chance."

Otto was quick to find a seat. After strapping himself in, he looked over the instruments to gauge the situation. No matter how many times he had gone through and atmospheric reentry, he could never get over the nauseating feeling that he was going to die. It was really a stupid thought, given that ships had been jumping from atmosphere to space for quite some time. However, Otto couldn't get over it. He had this gut feeling that one of these times the ship would explode into a massive fireball and scatter debris across the planet.

While all this turmoil raged on the inside of Otto, his outside was that of a cool demeanor. Anyone that looked at him wouldn't have been able to tell that his mind was screaming at him.

Sauls casually made his way to the pilot's seat and strapped himself in. While most ships could generally fly themselves from point A to point B and exit and enter atmospheres, Sauls rarely trusted the ships that they were given. Who knew what kind of knock off software was installed on the things? And besides, if anything unexpected happened, Sauls doubted the ability of a program to react to the unknown. So he took control of the ship, simply letting the computer advise the 'best possible route', "7 minutes until we touch down, we'll be through the bumpy portion soon."

The ship rattled and rocked as it fell toward the planet. Jim kept a firm grip on his console and chuckled at Andy as he scurried back to his hidey hole down in the engine room.

An orange glow enveloped the small craft as it broke through the atmosphere and entered the light blue skies above Kton-4. Below them a vast ocean sprawled out in all directions and there was no land in sight. In fact only about 6% of Kton-4 was land. The rest was clear blue water as far as the eye could see, minus a few mega resort ships. As the blast shields lowered a few wisps of white could be seen marring an otherwise flawless sky. Rain was very uncommon. It usually only rained for a week or two out of the year, though the storms that did happen tended to be spectacular. Yet another reason to come and visit. It was the only tourist destination for a hundred systems that managed to attract larger crowds when the weather was bad. Checking the map, Captain Jim noted that there were no active storm cells anywhere on the planet at the moment. He smiled and walked over to the pilot's seat, gingerly placing a hand on the headrest.

"This is a... fun planet, Salus. Spent the better part of a year here back when I was younger." Jim quipped, turning to Kryyzen. "They called me in to help out during the Draak rebellions, Scales. I'm sure you know about it. The story never made it to the mainstream for obvious reasons. Seemed the lizards didn't like working at the resorts for a pittance. Can't say I blame them. Shame... lost a couple good recruits on that one. The Government crushed their little rebellion like a slug. They opened the flood gates. We couldn't do a thing to save them. Poor scaly bastards..." The Captain trailed off and stared glassy-eyed at the horizon for a moment. "Said it was to send a message. Hah, but I digress. Check it out we're coming up to the city. The facility should be on the far side."

Outside the sky had taken on a pinkish hue as the ship circled farther around the planet. Huge shafts of colored light cut a swath through the evening air and fireworks exploded along the horizon. It was always like this. The city, Aquarius, was a year-round carnival. Up above fireworks were always going off, a little lower buildings twinkled with animated shows and live feeds from people celebrating and being joyous, even lower still were throngs of vehicles darting to and fro, and lower yet were the streets where everything happened. Casinos, bars, arcades, brothels, hotels... if it was fun it was there. Below that were the massive pillars that supported the floating city, as well as tenements for the workers that ensured the party never stopped. Down there was another story altogether. It was a working-class world filled with people from all walks of life and crossing dozens of species. Conspicuously absent were the Draak, who had been mostly-eliminated after their failed bid for a better life. It only took an angry politician and the flip of a switch to drown out dissent beneath Kton-4's picture perfect waves.

But such things were rarely discussed on Kton-4, especially when there was another party to get to! The finest goods were imported from every corner of the galaxy to ensure the floating paradises of Kton-4 remained fully stocked. Jim looked out the front window as the ship finally arrived in city airspace. The streets seemed to pulsate with the energy of life and to a newcomer it could be dizzying. He cracked a smile as his favorite performer appeared on the side of one of Aquarius' larger skyscrapers. As they passed the massive singer followed with her eyes and pointed right to them. The Captain chuckled loudly and gave the image a thumbs up, eliciting a wink from the performer before she vanished.

"What a town!"

A red light started flashing on the command console to indicate they were near their target. Motioning with his fingers, the Captain gave the final warning and headed for the hatch. He pulled a small pack off the wall and threw it over his shoulders. As well, he removed a compact assault rifle from an open arms locker and slid it into his belt. Sauls expertly guided the ship in for a landing and the main hatch opened almost immediately. Without waiting on the others, Jim stepped out into the comfortable air and inspected the landing zone.

They were around the back of the chemical facility on a flat landing pad. A short staircase led down to a pair of double-doors which were the rear entrance. The high intensity lights from the city-proper were subdued out this far. Facilities like this seemed out of place on a resort planet, but Kton-4's unique environment was perfect for advanced biological research. People had literally killed to get positions at facilities like this. The staff inside were probably none-too-happy that a bunch of nut jobs from the nearby pen had managed to get inside. Still, the operation seemed like it'd be pretty easy. Even if the crazies had gotten some weapons, the dossier seemed to indicate that over half of them had already gotten through the majority of their treatments, making them a significantly lower risk.

Jim flipped off his weapon's safety and spoke to nobody in particular as he headed for the doors, "Are we ready?"

Sauls felt repulsed by the 'vibe' of Kton-4, by the insane and constant partying, the unending frivolity which was layered over the sufferings of others. It was just another injustice of the Universe that such a place existed, especially when there were worlds where entire species struggled to survive. Sauls couldn't help but feel that Kton-4 existed only for the wealthy and the lucky, and he'd always had a grudge against those types.

He stared at his helmet sitting against the window and on the console in front of him, lost in his thoughts for a moment. The helmet was part of the stolen military gear he was wearing, from his days as a fighter pilot. While his suit only consisted of a helmet, torso armor to stop bullets and shrapnel, gloves, and combat boots, it did cover his body and provide breathing so that he could survive if the cockpit lost air pressure, or in this case, there was toxic gas released. Sauls patted his trusted pistol in its holster and got up, putting the helmet on. He looked down at his calves as he made his way off the ship, making sure his two knives were still strapped on. Once outside, Sauls looked around, "Everyone out that needs to be out, hatch has to be closed so nothing crawls inside while we're gone..."

Otto stepped off the ship armed with a sub-machine gun and a gas mask. He kicked himself for not thinking of grabbing a suit, in case there were any toxic agents that could be absorbed through the skin, but it was too late for that now. Right now, he was banking on the idea that any noxious chemicals would be entirely respiratory, although that was very unlikely.

"So captain," Otto said as he walked up next to Jim, "were you serious about the relaxation part? I could use a couple of days off from not doing anything." Otto smirked as he looked around the landing pad area.

Kry flashed the captain a quick glare, but soon lightened up to the jokes, knowing that killing the man would not only be stupid, but possibly have him hunter by two factions, something even he could not survive. Calling back to the captain when he spoke of the history of Kton-4's Draak rebellion he merely shook his head, "Who do you think continued to live to spread the tale, captain?" Flashing a toothy smirk he then turned away and continued to watch the spectacle of Aquarius come and go as they landed.

Stepping off with relative ease Kryyzen merely gave Otto a slight pat on the back, "This isn't relaxation to you, Otto?"
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

"Well I hope you picked up a thing or two from your experience, Scales. Because personally I don't believe a word of it, otherwise I'd reme- GOT ONE!" Jim stopped mid thought and wheeled to his left, firing a two shots through the glass doors. A pair of prisoners in orange jumpsuits fell out from behind a large wooden container, a dart in each neck. "Make that two. Anyway, like I was saying, Scales, I hope you learned a thing or two from your experience. I certainly did. For instance, don't kill 'em unless you have to. One of the few respectable people on this planet, a Draak, taught me that."

The Captain walked up to the doors and reached for the handle. It broke off in his hands and the door shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. Brushing pellets of glass from his shoulder, he continued inside and looked around. It was a simple lobby-like area. Since it was the back of the facility and nearing nightfall the niceties had been shrugged off. A janitor's bucket and mop were in the corner along with a wet floor. Apparently he'd left after things went bad. The large container was on the other side of the room next to the reception desk, which was also abandoned. As the team filed in they began taking stock.

Two of the prisoners had been neutralized and the Captain busied himself with tying them up. One was human and clutching a sharpened toothbrush while the other was some sort of green creature with a bandage on his head. The large wooden box appeared to be untampered with, minus the two small holes from the darts. Over by the janitor's bucket a pair of soapy footprints trailed off into the facility, though the Captain hadn't noticed this yet. Behind the coat rack sat a trembling man in a blue jumpsuit. And further down the hall beyond two swinging metal doors a pair of voices whispered hurriedly to one another while a third simply mumbled a bit of gibberish. The team, being capable professionals, began to act.

"Hmph, I have learned plenty, captain." The Draak said as the captain fired his tranq gun.

Kryyzen scoffed as they broke into the facility, "Respectable? Cowardice if you ask me!" Upon watching the captain tie up the soldiers Kry raced past him and burst through the two swinging metal doors. In a loud bang Kryyzen found that he had bull rushed a mental patient that was playing sentry by the door, knocking him out, whilst another crazed man was close by and swung a lead pipe at the lethal Draak. Dodging easily as the man was a poor fighter, Kryzzen slashed at the mans chest and left a brutal gaping wound, with blood seeping through his orange jumpsuit. Dying, the man fell to the ground in agony.

However, the victory was short lived as Kryzzen heard a man yell, "Die die die die die die die!" Followed by burst rounds from a rifle. Taking cover behind a column, Kryzzen cursed under his breath. Noting the decided lack of real cover options, he found that the room they were in was just another hallway that presumably lead into the main facility. Looking to the door, he waited for his teammates to catch up and take care of his ranged opponent.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

"This is why we couldn't help them..." Jim mumbled to the others. "Would someone mind helping our hyperactive friend?"

After which he returned to examining the bandage on the green creature's head. It was a strange patch job. Whatever it was, there was no injury apparent. Just a pair of black marks.

Down the hall and behind a supply cart, Kryyzen could hear someone mumbling. The third escapee, a Draak, had somehow dove into cover with him, but simply sat there spouting off seemingly random words.

"I think maybe you're not right. You know, man? But we all need help, too. A repair's a repair or so they said. No man, I don't know but no. Did you see it? Just be careful. This stuff is very unright. But I'm almost done. Maybe a couple rounds to the head would do you some good!"

James caught up with the rest of the group after retriving supplies from the ship's meager medbay.  Checking his pack and rifle one last time, he arrived in the lobby just in time for Kry to charge noisily through the doors ahead.

"Damnit Kryyzen!" he shouted quickly as the sound of fighting came from the other side of the doors, which had since swung shut again.  Was it so much to ask for a smidgen of professionalism from the lizard?  However, his annoyance quickly turned to concern as gunfire rang out from the hallway.

Moving up against one of the thick metal doors, he nudged the second open slightly and peeked through.  At the other end of the hallway was the convict with the assault rifle.  The manic individual was focused on the pillar Kry was hiding behind, and failed to notice the double doors open slightly further as James lined up a shot and fired.

As the assailant slumped to the ground with a dart in his neck, James moved into the hallway, steping deftly over the lacserated body of the individual Kry attacked.  Quickly scanning the room for any more signs of trouble, he shot a frown at the lizard.  "This is why we operate as a group and don't blindly charge into hostile filled rooms.  Get your **** straightened out Kryyzen and settle down."  He paused for a moment as he regarded the remaining convict.  "Who's your friend?" he asked, motioning to the other Draak.

"You're a doctor... yeah! I can smell it on you!!" the convict said, becoming excited. "How am I coming along? Better right? Yeah! Check it out!"

Teetering over to James, the Draak pulled a bandage off of his head and pointed to two black marks like those on the green creature in the lobby. The only difference being that his weren't as well-defined.

"It's coming in nice, right? All better now, right? You're gonna fix me, right?? Zed... you met Zed. He's down the hall and he said I needed to leave with him but I knew he was wrong, right?. But man you showed him!! R-right? Come on! Let's go back!! I want to be better. We can get the others and leave soon!"

James' face had a somewhat concerned face as the confict prattled off nonsense to him.  "Yeah, yeah." he said in a calming voice, patting the draak on the shoulder.  "We'll get everything fixed up.  You just have a seat here while we take care of stuff." He motioned to a small stool sitting off in the corner, and headed back towards the metal doors.

Swinging them open again, he motioned for the rest of the team to follow.  "Things look good in here Captain.  We've got 3 convicts down and one who seems a bit out of it and chatty, but otherwise alright."

Kryyzen looked at the mad Draak in confusion. "What the h-" he began just before James burst through the door playing the hero and shot his assailant. Turning away from the gibberish speaking Draak Kryzzen rolled his yellow eyes as James scolded him, "Perhaps if you had some more speed on those old human feet of yours this wouldn't be a pro-" Again Kryzen cut himself short as the mad Draak interjected and showed his two markings.

"What in the hell..." He muttered as he watched the Draak highlight his two markings. "Who in the hell is this Zed, 'friend'?" The words spilled from his tongue in the most insincere manner possible.

Johnny had stayed silent and at the back of the group. Fighting non-humans didn't quite seem right to him, so he tried to stay away from that. He just stood, watching it all, waiting for him to be needed. He'd pitch in at a later date. He lit a cigarette while he waited for the team to be done talking, he wouldn't embarrass himself with talking right now, not until he knew what all was here.

Sauls casually strolled into the facility after having ensured the ship was locked up tight, stepping over the darted victims, and noticing the marks on the green creature. As he walked into the hallway, he also made a mental note of the marks on the Draak, especially that they weren't as obvious as on the green creature, "Fantastic job alerting the facility to our presence by the way..." Sauls walked over to the unconscious convict with the assault rifle and knelt down, examining the convict first, "I'm guessing this is Zed... and this is apparently Zed's homemade melee weapon..." said Sauls, picking up the rifle next, "Chances are this used to be a prison guard's rifle as well. Logically they either stole the rifles right off the guards or hit the prison armory, which makes sense. Not sure why we'd be told they didn't have these."

He searched the convict a bit more, "Sure wish you were still awake to confirm my theory, buddy... But hey, you left me some ammo at least." Sauls took the ammo for the rifle off the convict and stood up, chuckling to himself, "And thanks for the rifle too." As Sauls slung the rifle onto his back, a human convict came charging through the door at the end of the hallway, yelling, "What's goi- oh sh" Before he could finish, Sauls had drawn his pistol, aimed, and fired a round that shattered the man's knee, causing him to drop to the floor and begin screaming in agony. Within the next few seconds, Sauls was on top of him, covering the man's mouth with one hand and pushing the muzzle of his pistol into the convict's forehead with his other, "I think you get the picture, buddy, so start talking about everything you know."

Otto didn't pay much attention to Sauls, who seemed to have everything under control. Instead, he pulled out a small computer that was specifically equipped with what everyone called a "sniffer." Otto walked around the secured rooms, waving the device around a bit before bringing it back to analyze the results.

"This area is clear. No chemical spills or anything, but this thing has a limited range," Otto said as he tapped around to look at the statistics. "Although that convict might be right. There is slightly high amount of sulfur..." With that, he waved it around behind James back. "Had eggs recently, Doc?"

On a whim, Otto waved the machine over the convicts head. The little computer emitted a beep which the convict didn't take too kindly to. Within seconds, the convict had jumped up and tackled Otto to the ground, before the mercenary could even react.

"Get im offf!" Otto managed to yell as he fought to kick the convict off of him.

The engineer lept to Otto's rescue, in that he shot the convict in the neck with a dart. Almost immediately, the convict became dead weight, collapsing on the man. "Sorry mate," apologising as he pulled the convict off, "what did he take offence to any way?" Andy offered a hand to help lift his colleague.

Moe rounded a corner as he glided through the halls. Soon he noticed an open door with a suspicious amount of tracked mud outside the threshold. Not one to just ignore such an inviting scene, he strolled right into what looked like the parliament of scruffy convicts.

"What's going on in here? I noticed a whole mess of dirt outside, and if you-" His words were cut short when a muttering Draak began to scream "It's right there! Just like the bad docs! With the beepin' things, and the needles and all! Look at the lights! They're glowin'! Lookit them glow, just like in the room!" His scaly fingers seemed to be indicating Moe's smooth crystal eyes.

One man looked very disturbed by the Draak's nonsensical ramblings and grabbed a container of sulfuric acid on a shelf nearby, knocking over a few chemicals onto the floor in the process. He threw it at the unexpecting Moe, who quickly rolled over to dodge the dangerous vial and grabbed a metal pole lying on the ground. The violent man began to back away but received a sound whack to the head by the Scopulan, prompting him and the others to flee.

"Stupid unpredictable squishies... Hm?" Gunshots echoed through the corridors. As solid lead was significantly less corrosive than H2SO4, Moe swiftly glided over the linoleum and down the hallways to see the source of the noise, stumbling onto what looked like a couple of human law enforcers examining the convict he previously gave a cranial beating to.

"Carbon officers, I work at this facility. Would you mind informing me as to what exactly is going on here?"
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

"Prison break, brick face." Jim spoke loudly as he caught up with the rest of the group. "APD called us in to deal with it. I'm Jim and they're everyone else. Unless you're one for tracking down criminals I suggest you head out to the landing pad and wait for us to finish. There's only..." the Captain stopped for a moment and looked around, counting, "Four left. Shouldn't take too long. Half of them seem to have had their brains fried anyway. You didn't see anyone else, did you?"

"Thanks," Otto said to Andy as he was hoisted back up on his feet. "It was the sniffer. I waved it by him and it beeped which set him off. That reminded Otto to check the sniffer, which had fallen to the floor. After picking it up and looking at it, Otto let out a whistle.

"Well that's interesting... There's a number of strange compounds in higher than normal volumes, even for a creature of his race. We should check the other convicts we come across, see if the results are the same as this guy."

"Yeah, they're undergoing treatments, remember?" Jim said to Otto. "It was in the briefing. Anyway I guess that one wasn't finished. A few of the others seem to be further along though. They were probably brought along for the ride by the others. Anyway, let's get this show on the road. If you're not helping us head to the ship, Rocky. Otherwise stay near someone with a gun and keep your head down. Remember, just four more to go and we can haul them back to their home."

"Right," Otto said, looking over the readings. "That would explain that whole thing." Otto looked over the convicts and the new rock creature that had shown up.

"So do we have any idea where the others are, or should we split up into groups to cover more ground quickly?"

Sauls incapacitated his unwilling to talk convict and returned to the group, "They don't seem particularly dangerous. If we go in groups, we can hunt them all down faster. Of course, if we go in groups, that's fewer people to keep the lizard in check," Sauls said with a smile.

"Don't worry about that. Me, Scales, Otto, and Rocky will go left. You lead the others to the right, Sauls. Now let's finish this up. Those jet skis are calling my name."

Giving the rest of the team a thumbs up, Jim and his small group headed their way while the others remained to go about their part of the mission. Unbeknownst to the mercenaries, three of the prisoners were listening in on the conversation from the security office down the rightmost hallway. Their leader was an older Draak with glasses. He clutched a handgun and stared at the video screen. His compatriots also had handguns and were clearly in a proper state of mind. No black marks and no bandages to be seen.

"My kinsman is going the other way, it seems. That means we might have a chance. Get into position. Leave the human doctor for me... he's probably one of them."

Sauls' team waited until the Captain was out of earshot before they began coordinating their plan, unaware that they would be walking into a well-orchestrated trap. Meanwhile, Jim and his team pressed onward down a long, quiet corridor.

Sauls cracked his neck and motioned for the others to follow to the right, "Well let's get this over with, can't have the Captain missing his jet skis for too long." When the team came to the end of the hallway, Sauls leaned against the door, trying to listen for anyone on the other side. Unable to hear anything, he motioned for the team to follow as he slowly opened the door and entered the next room, his pistol drawn.

The room that Sauls' team had entered was a large laboratory area. Several long counters cut along its length and the walls were home to all sorts of storage containers and equipment. Two catwalks ran overhead and led to the dark security station, accessible by a stairway on the far side of the space. A giant garage door was built into the leftmost wall and dozens of crates were stacked neatly, waiting to be picked up in the morning and shipped out.In the center of the room was a computer monitor that seemed to be compiling test results, as well as a soft drink bottle that was with condensation. Otherwise everything was normal and the room appeared empty.

As the team surveyed the area a loud click came from behind and echoed about the seemingly-deserted chamber. They had just been locked in.

Johnny spoke for the first time this mission, "God ****ing damn it. Sauls, you just lead us into a bloody ****ing trap." He walked over the the bottle and sniffed it, drinking it after he was satisfied that it was not toxic. He wandered over to the crates and pushed one to the side.

Shaking his head in wonder, Kryyzen tuned out much of the conversation that Jim, Otto and the others were having. Instead his eyes narrowed on the strange living rock creature that had entered the room. 'What.. I dont... how... thats just ridiculous...' The thoughts raced in his head until he heard the captain call out his little nick name, "Scales, Otto, Rocky...."

Snapping out of his wonder, Kry nodded, "Hmph, splitting them from me is practically a death sentence captain, but if you insist." He added as they parted away from the group and continued down their path until they came upon a steel door. "Well, since last time I know some of you threw such a fit, shall someone else do the honors?"

"Certainly, Scales. These little allegorical names we've been assigned are rather insightful, no?" He was met with a blank stare, something he took as negative with the humanoids (but par for the course among his own kind, naturally). "Right then. Perhaps if I apply a little force here-" His cybernetic arms gripped the door tightly, visibly crumpling the metal panels. "And the final touch..."

Moe whirled around like a rogue bowling pin, causing a few of the others to jump back in alarm. As he neared 360 degrees in a second, his heavy body jumped forward and slammed into the door, completely removing and launching it several yards forward into the room that lay before him. As he righted himself he caught sight of what looked like a convict running behind a large piece of lab equipment. Indeed, this seemed to be an extension of the previous area, probably more secret. Not that a newly hired hand like himself would be aware of such things.

"What is this machine? It resembles some sort of Erlenmeyer flask with a mess of pipes and catwalks connected...Perhaps the central computer system? Oh dear, it seems like this room has an awful lot of good hiding places, doesn't it? Best be on our guard, poetic carbon comrades."
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

"Johnny, settle down and put that bottle back.  You should know better than to drink from open containers in a chem lab." James barked as his eyes sweeped the room, examining potential points of cover, rifle raised.  While the door locking could have just been an automated system, it was very likely they had wandered into a trap.

Giving a quick nod to Andy as he moved to try to get the door reopened, slowly moving furthur into the room, staying near cover.  "Trap or not we've got a job to do.  Sauls, help me clear the room.  Johnny, watch Andy's back."  James didn't like the situation they were in, but he didn't want to sit still in the open by the door and give their enemy the chance to strike.  If there was going to be a firefight, he wanted to make the first move.

Sauls couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at Johnny's actions. Perhaps the mutant was mildly retarded, or just brain damaged from the radiation on Earth. Either way, Sauls rolled his eyes as he approached the computer, "Yes, let's drink open containers in an experimental chemical laboratory. Let's also ignore the computer right next to the open container, which apparently has important infos." Sauls looked closely at the monitor, taking in the information, "And we're trying to open the door, why? They want to ambush us, let them. We'll take them all down and get this over with sooner." As he continued reading the monitor, he pointed at the security office, "Chances are the lock controls are in there, and logically, they must've locked us in from there. So I'd think they're in here with us... Interesting stuff..."

"Clever human!" a voice called out, followed by a gunshot that knocked Andy's computer from his hand. An older Draak with glasses stepped out from behind a container of red liquid with a female human in his grip. She wore a lab coat and had a facility ID badge. The Draak was holding a pistol to her head. "Now then... I know one of you is a doctor. I can smell it. The doctor will step forward and answer my question when I count to three or the human's precious warm blood will be on your hands. The question..."

Pushing the gun hard against the woman's skull, the Draak took another step forward. His comrades were still nowhere to be seen; though they had their shots lined up.

"I've stolen food from convenience store in order to feed my family. The clerk allowed me to take what I wanted as I held him at gunpoint and called the police after I left. While heading home I was tracked down by one of the police officers, one I recognized as a local tyrant that preys on the poor. Someone that I've witnessed beating my neighbors and raping their wives. I killed him without remorse and took his head in order to send a message to others like him. Tell me, doctor... what do you think of that? Her life is in your hands. One. Two. Three."

James stepped forward, still remaining close enough to cover that he could dive down behind it if the need arose.  Glaring at the Draak, his eyes still darted around the large room for sign of other hostiles, weapon raised at the one in front of him.

"Near as I can see," he began in a calm, vaguely threatening voice, "If you're an individual who values justice over law.  A commendable trait.  From your description, the officer deserved to die and everyone is better off without him.  Still though, you yourself have committed crimes as well, even if justified, and must be willing to face the consequences of your actions."

Kryyzen watched as the stone golem used his cybernetic arms to break into the room. The room was relatively uninteresting to the Draak as they located one of the prisoners.

Sneering at Jim, he turned to him, "You test my patience with your constant jests, captain." Taking his attention away from the final prisoner her turned around and headed back out of the room, "As I said, splitting up from me probably ensured the death of our squad mates, and since there are three more still about the facility, they're more than likely dead already." Kryyzen shrugged, clearly not too worried about the other members of the crew. He began a casual pace back, unconcerned with what the group decided to do with the final cowering prisoner. Especially since he had been barred from taking action against him. He merely walked off, waiting for Jim, Otto, and the Rock to catch up as he sought out the rest of the team.

The Draak glared at James for a moment and blinked almost audibly. He eased off ever-so slightly with his handgun and nodded.

"Acceptable. You're not one of them. Out with you."

Two figured moved out from behind cover on either side of the team with their pistols drawn. They appeared tense but did not look as if they were about to fly off of the handle. Up above, the Draak moved back and pressed a button on the security console. The doors that the team had used to enter the room unlocked. Reaffirming his grip on the hostage, the old lizard edged toward the stairs and began making his way down.

"There's more going on here than you know. We didn't escape because we wanted to get away from our punishment. The prison is a dark place. Untenable things happen there that pale in comparison to our own heinous crimes. Have you seen the others? They have been broken beyond repair by evil men. If we deserve death, so be it. But the fate that they offer... no, I will not face it. All I ask is that you give us a chance to stop what has been set into motion. Not just for us, but for everyone. Allow us to leave unharmed and I will release my hostage. I cannot say what will happen after that, but it is my sincerest hope that we are able to make amends for what we've done."

Taking a deep breath, the Draak arrived on the ground floor. He seemed absolutely relaxed and professional, unlike his partners. It was somewhat unnerving.

"Kryyzen!" Jim hollered in an abnormally authoritative tone and drawing his gun. "I will not have a headstrong Draak put derail this operation any further. You've been absolutely out of line, flagrantly disobeying command. You stay here with us or I'll end your life on the spot. I didn't fight alongside your kind during the Uprising just so a insubordinate, egg-sucking twerp like you could carry their legacy. Get that through your thick, scaly head and fall in! Now."

Sauls casually typed away on the computer while James and the Draak talked, seemingly totally relaxed. He put a memory stick into it, quickly copied the information he wanted, and withdrew the stick, stashing it back in his armor, "You know, you could be a little more specific about what they've done to you. The marks, the 'treatment'. You must realize our employers wouldn't be happy if we didn't bring all of you back, alive, as well." Sauls observed the situation, figuring he could snatch his pistol off the counter next to the computer and put a round through each of their heads within about two seconds, the leader's head first. Unfortunately, the Captain wanted them alive, and there seemed to be far fewer nonlethal options. The hostage was insignificant to Sauls, collateral damage, but he understood that others would care, particularly the Captain and their employers. People always had a tendency to gush over 'saviors' anyway, and who knows, the woman might be grateful to Sauls...

It took a lot of mental fortitude to keep his itchy trigger finger from grabbing that pistol and splattering the Draak's brains as he said, "I've got a pretty good idea what they've been doing to you, and it's screwed up. But if you want to be a true 'good guy', you'll let her go and help us fix this mess. Tell us everything you know, and we go storm the prison, together, and beat the crap out of everyone that gets in our way." Sauls smiled and added, "Karma's always a bitch, after all."

His eyes narrowed sharply upon listening to Jim scold him. Turning, he returned to his original position. "Very well. What are our orders the, captain" The words came out begrudgingly as the Draak folded his arms in unwilling anticipation.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

"I'm sorry." James said sympathetically, backing off a bit.  "I can understand your view, and agree that there is definetly something strange going on here, but without more information I can't just let you go.  Even still, it's not my call.  I have a job to do, and I'm not a man who goes against my duties.  Still, I can give you the chance to talk to the captain, explain just what's going on.  He may be sympathetic to your cause."

Turning to Sauls, he continued.  "As satisfying as it is to play the hero, it's not our place to do so, or at the very least not make promises to do so.  We will talk to the captain, and leave the decision of how to handle these three up to him."

Glancing around the room, the Draak snarled as he contemplated his options. Begrudgingly, he looked over toward his companions. "Down."

They both seemed relieved and quickly set their guns on the floor. The Draak whispered something to the woman before letting her go and placing his handgun on a nearby step. He held his hands up and walked toward Sauls and the others.

"You have one of my kinsmen with you. I saw him kill one of the others... unfortunate. They won't take kindly to that. Take is back to the prison and carry on as if everything is as it should be. Let them know about the fate of my companion at the hand of the Draak. Things will become clearer to you after that. Do not mention any of what I've said, what little there actually was."

Holding out his hands, the older Draak waited to be bound and taken back.

"All we've got to do is get this one guy and meet up with the others. They can handle three prisoners, no problem." Jim said quietly. "I can hear the guy whimpering on the other side of the wall. He's scared and might act stupidly, but I doubt he'll be very dangerous. He didn't have a gun, after all."

Motioning with his finger, the Captain edged into the room and trained his pistol on the trembling form of the man. He was standing against one of the walls with what looked like a fire hose in his hands. The large hose snaked along the floor and was connected to what had clearly been labeled as a high pressure tank with all sorts of labels on it.

"S-stay back, man! I'll... you... if you come any closer I'll hit you with this toxic junk! Stay back!!"

Sauls motioned to the other two, "Bind them up, I'll take care of the Draak..." As Sauls bound the Draak's hands together, he quietly said, "You know it would help a lot more if you'd explain better what's going on. I pulled what I could from the computer, but I figure you've got first-hand experience. I might be a mercenary, but that doesn't mean I'm some heartless bastard just out for the cash. I understand what it's like to fight for a cause, even if it turns out the people you were fighting for were the 'evil' ones..." Sauls made sure the binding was tight, "Whatever you know that can help me understand the situation, the 'treatments', all that..." He stepped back and took his helmet off, revealing his cybernetic eyes to the Draak, "I understand what it's like to be the unwilling victim of an experiment."

Baring his teeth, the Draak whispered so that only Sauls could hear.

"They want to 'fix' us. All of us. Doesn't matter if you're Human or Draak. They want you and if you give them the opportunity, they will take you and you will go willingly. Be careful once you're inside."

"Easy, easy," Otto said, stepping up beside the captain, but making sure to keep his weapon holstered. "Don't want to do anything you'll regret. We're not here to hurt you, we're just trying to secure the station." Otto had both of his hands in front of him, motioning the convict to put down the hose. "We just need you to calm down."

"No way man!!! You're one of them! You're here to take us back!!!" the man ranted, clearly deranged but probably not from any medical treatments. "I'm leaving here alive and that's that!!!"

Without warning the convict opened up the high pressure line and red liquid sprayed everywhere, dousing the team and rapidly coating the walls and floors. Jim stumbled backwards, trying and failing to shield himself and fell onto his back. He rolled over onto his side to see the prisoner jumping over him and running off back toward the helipad. Cursing loudly, he tried to get up but had trouble because of the slippery surface. Seeing that the others were still up, he hollered.

"Get him!! I'll be along!"

Andy had spent the entire encounter in shock from his computer just being shot out of his hand. As scared he was, he had to commend the shot. Just as he was cuffing one of the escapees up, the last few minutes caught up to him. "I can save you the trouble and tell you the captain is going to say what any self-respecting merc'll say: 'Where's the money in that?' We listen to the word of, may I remind you, a convicted killer, storm the prison, overthrown the corrupt, what, governor? And then what? Oh, I'm sure these guys'll give us the mounds of gold bullion they're practically sitting on. Enough to retire on, I'll bet. And we'd need to retire, because something that stupid will be black mark against our name from here to the End." Out of sheer anger, he pulled the cuffs a little too tight.

Sauls put the helmet back on, These damn mercs will be the death of me one day. I'm not one of them, but I don't have many more options left... What's an exiled and hunted man to do? He sighed to himself, holstered his pistol, and moved over to the doctor, "Are you okay miss? Any wounds, bruises? What did the Draak whisper to you?"

Otto took off after the convict, and then promptly fell on his face.

"Aghh," he mumbled out, but it was garbled by the red liquid collecting on the floor. Otto ignored the pain, and was back on his feet in a matter of seconds. He ran down the hallway after the convict, leaving a trail made up of the substance and his blood, although it was impossible to tell which was which.

Somehow Otto managed to get close enough to grab the criminal by the back of his jumpsuit and they both tumbled onto the hard floor. Thankfully the prisoner broke Otto's fall, saving him from further injury. The escapee was knocked unconscious. Walking down the hallway, Jim gave Otto a nod as the engineer tied the man up. Swishing some of the red liquid around in his mouth, the Captain continued to walk for a few more feet until he could see the helipad. Turning back toward Otto, he called out.

"You notice that this stuff tastes like cherries?"

Behind him, the doorway opened and Sauls' team appeared with the rest of the convicts. A few of them did a double-take as they spied Otto, Kryyzen, Moe, and Jim covered in the blood-like substance. Spinning back around, Jim smiled a reddish grin and pointed back toward the lab with his thumb.

"Stuff tastes like cherries!"

As Otto was catching his breath, he finally realized that the red stuff actually did taste like cherries.

"Aye, sir, it does. Why the hell would they have maraschino liquid in here? Is this place connected to a bar?"

Sauls chuckled and pulled out the flash drive, tapping it against his helmet, "It's some super secret new solution. Some kind of new varant of anti-ice cream headache solution. Hah. That's their special little secret. But hey, now I've got the data to either sell to their competitors or sell it back to them. Karma might be a bitch but man does she pay up." Sauls laughed again and put the drive away, "It's still possible that this place is connected to the prison though, who knows." He shrugged and motioned that they should get a move on, as he led the way for his team back to the ship, convicts in tow, gathering the ones neutralized earlier.

Kryyzen brooded as the red liquid contaminated his scaly body. He hated cherries. He attempted to shake the substance off but found it was too thick to merely shake away. Walking with the captain as they reunited with the rest of their team Kry's eyes narrowed sharply as he noticed another Draak in the group of prisoners. A slight hiss escaped his mouth as he locked eyes with the older Draak.

Holding himself back he asked the captain, "What are our new orders." His eyes never left the captive Draak as he spoke.

"We're going to prison, boys and girls!"

Jim yelled loudly and encouraged the rest to follow him back to the ship. After everyone had gotten on board and the prisoners had been secured, Sauls worked his magic and the ship lifted off into the sky. They traveled for only five to ten minutes before setting down inside the prison walls. Their ship and cargo had already been cleared. One by one they brought the convicts out to the guards waiting for them on the pad. A few were carried out as they were unconscious, and one unlucky fellow was a little too dead to walk out so he was wheeled out. A young human woman in a dark blue dress uniform appeared up on the helipad to greet the crew. She was the warden of the prison. A strong and accomplished person, she came across as very caring and genuine.

"Hey! You must be the team the PD dispatched. How'd it go?"

"Yeah... I was a little jumpy with my trigger finger, ma'am." Jim responded, glancing at Kryyzen. "I'm really sorry... you can dock it from my pay. But it was my fault and I'll take full responsibility."

"Ah... that's s shame." she said, approaching the dead prisoner. "Poor guy. His name was Art. He'd been working really hard to get his life back in order. You should have read some of his work. He truly had a talent for the written word." the Warden sighed, turning to the Draak prisoner. "Voss! Hah, I should have known you'd try this. Look, I know you want out but I can just go around the courts. They wanted you in our program. If you want we can sit down and have another talk. But beyond that my hands are tied..." she calmly placed a hand on Voss' shoulder to comfort him but he flinched and pulled back. Looking a bit hurt, the Warden turned to the others.

"Anyway, why don't we all head inside? I can show you the facilities and what we do here. It's really an amazing program. Some of the guards standing before you are actually graduates!"

A few of the guards acknowledged the team and one even gave a casual wave. Turning, the Warden headed back inside. Her guards followed with the prisoners in tow. Smiling and motioning to the others, Jim followed along. The hallways within the prison branched off in all directions with cameras and turrets affixed to the wall every few steps. It was an extraordinarily high-security facility. Jim began to wonder just how the prisoners even escaped. They must have had a pretty awesome escape route. Jim's imagination began to run wild.

The group stopped as a pair of guards led a particularly nasty-looking prisoner down the hallway. He seemed like the kind of guy that only appeared in nightmares. Thankfully the collar around his neck kept him in check. The duo could easily maneuver him through the corridors. They nodded to the Warden as they passed. Continuing forward, the Draak and his prisoner friends were led off in another direction. The Warden led the group through a pair of security doors and stopped in what looked like a classroom.

"Figure I'll show you what we do here. This is one of our classrooms. We start first with a series of round-table discussions with groups of five inmates. Over the course of several weeks we ask inmates to tell us about their crimes and why they were compelled to commit them." the Warden gave a few example questions and then pointed up. "You'll notice we have cameras along the perimeter of the room. They measure various biometrics for each inmate in order to determine how they feel as they talk, as well as whether or not they're being truthful. We use this data for the next stage of treatment which is a six month to one year one-on-one session with a highly-trained psychologist."

Giving the group a nod, the Warden began to walk again and headed through another door. The next room looked more like a laboratory than a classroom, with dozens of individual stations, each outfitted with a chair and some kind of large medical machine. Approaching one of the machines, the Warden grabbed it and swung it out so that the team could examine it. It was a long arm with two pointed prongs on the end.

"After we've gotten a comprehensive analysis of an inmate's behavioral patterns and triggers, we bring the results to our team of doctors have them create a rehabilitation program. The program is the secret to our success. Basically we figure out what's going on in an inmate's head before, during, and after a crime is committed. Using this we are able to isolate which sectors of the brain are active at those times. This machine non-invasively modifies those sectors that trigger during criminal activity and recalibrates the brain to compensate during times of duress."

Noting the blank stares from several of the team members, she thought for a moment and reiterated.

"Basically when an inmate gets mad or starts to act like they would when they are about to commit a crime, the brain is taught to compensate and keep the inmate at a constant, calm level. It doesn't mean that they are helpless, they can still jump out of the way of a moving train or protect a child from an attacking animal. But it does prevent them from committing bad deeds. And we've been highly successful with it." the Warden paused and sighed a bit. "Unfortunately the untreated inmates can become paranoid about this all. Voss is one of them. He really isn't the type to resort to paranoia, but I guess when your hardened, murderer friend is suddenly... average and non-violent. Well, I can see how such a change would be unsettling."

Patting the mechanical arm and pushing it back into position, the Warden led the team out of the medical room and down another hallway. They arrived in what looked like the staff cafeteria.

"Anyway, that's what we do here! If you'd like I can get you some pamphlets. Also feel free to ask me any questions. For right now, though, I need to head up to my office and verify your work. I'll be back with a rep from the accounting office and we'll get you guys paid! In the meantime, feel free to grab a bit or kick back and relax. Since you're working for us right now everything's on the house. Oh, and we just got this antique arcade game. It's called skee-ball! Try it out, sometimes I'm amazed at how clever the older civilizations were. I'll be back in ten or twenty minutes, guys."

With that, the Warden left the cafeteria.

Sauls was disturbed as he looked at the machines that modified brains. The potentials for such technology went far beyond making violent creatures into nonviolent ones. To even consider these potentials made Sauls feel a little sick to his stomach, 'Recalibrates' the brain to 'compensate'... Treating people like machines, things to simply be modified or augmented. Bastards. When they got to the cafeteria, he sat down quickly and took his helmet off, almost slamming it onto the table, "Let's get the hell out of this place, ASAP. This prison makes me very uncomfortable..." Sauls muttered to himself, "They think they just fix people, like goddamned broken machines... It's inhuman..."

Rolling his reptilian eyes as Jim apologized for the death of the prisoner, Kryyzen merely shrugged off the sap story about the life of this 'Art'. To him he was the target and was treated as such, regardless of his 'progress'.

Kryyzens nasal senses were flooded with disgusting smells as the warden abandoned them into the cafeteria. Recounting what he had just experienced Kry nodded in agreement with Sauls assessment, "I agree, this place disturbs me greatly as well. These machines are unnatural and this 'rehabilitation' is for the weak who do not understand how to handle threats. We should go." He looked to the captain expectantly since he was showing restraint and 'respect' as he not merely leaving upon his own volition as he normally would.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

Andy just looked at the two of them in disbelief. "This is a hell of a lot better that what they've got 'round my neck of the woods. Back there, we just burn the pleasure centre of the brain so they don't enjoy commiting crimes any more. At least here, people come out somewhat normal." He turned to Saul. "And you know what, yeah, these guys are broken machines. It's a well known fact that just bunging people in a cell with other criminals usually makes things worse. It's far batter for society if they come in psychos and come out ready and willing to properly contribute." He turned to Kryyzen. "I don't know if you noticed, but you got to this planet by unnatural means. And I apologise on behalf of the human race of, occasionally, not wanting to go around with hard-on for violence." He sighed and counted to ten, before heading over to get some food.

James smiled faintly as he saw the old skeeball machine.  It had been a long time since he had seen one of those, well before the start of the war.  He considered giving it a shot while they waited, but that wouldn't be professional of him.

Turning his attention to the conversation at hand, he spoke up.  "I'm inclined to agree with Andy on this one.  While the method may be somewhat unconvential, it seems reasonably effective and certainly far more humane than many prisons I've seen.  It's effective, lowers the cost of housing prisoners longterm, and gives them the chance to contribute to society again.  I don't see a problem with that."

Sauls glared at Andy, then relaxed, "This technology has too many potentials. I would rather have a free species with some violence, than a species that is controlled with no violence. You can bet that there are a good amount of very powerful people looking to use this to control populations. To think otherwise is simply foolish. You can't go around modifying people, especially unwilling ones." Sauls' tightly clenched his hands, a sudden wave of anger sweeping over him as he was once again reminded of what the military did to him, "Whether you think it 'fixes' them or makes them 'better' has nothing to do with the situation. It isn't your right to do that to another being." His hands relaxed again, and he cracked his neck. He slowly observed the cafeteria and anyone in it, trying to return to his usual sense of tranquility.

Andy returned to the table with prison-grade slop on a tray. "Yeah. And that's all it is, potential. Perhaps it's a failing of this species to jump at every potential like it was a certainty. It had use back when we had to watch every bush for lions, but right now your just guessing. You heard the warden, it's a slow thing that requires a controlled environment, and I'm betting those 'very powerful people' would want fast results they can use on the public. And another way we differ," This prison food was better than expected, "rights are just words on fancy pieces of paper. I wasn't born with any rights, save what the guys we voted in gave us. That's how it is, no matter how folks like to believe otherwise. It all comes down to luck."

"According to this," Jim began, looking down at a pamphlet, "the prisoners undergo these treatments voluntarily... they aren't forced. Which makes sense. I mean, who is going to put up with over a year of preliminary evaluation? The system would break down. It does say that in extreme cases a court can require a patient to go through treatments, but that... 'accounts for less than 1% of all cases', so yeah. I think your worries are a bit unfounded."

Leaning back, Jim scanned the room and settled on the skee-ball machine. Grinning, he wandered over and started up a game. He carefully lined up each shot, hitting the 100-point hole every single time. With one ball left, he narrowed his eyes and let the ball fly. It rolled down the lane, up off the ramp, and settled into the high score hole once more. A loud buzzer began to go off and the machine lit up. Jim threw his hands in the air and began to cheer.

"Yeaaaaaaah!! PERFECT GAME!! That's what I'm talking about!!"

Jim looked puzzled for a moment, as it appeared the Skeeball victory bell had suddenly got a lot louder. After a moment it became apparent that alarms were blaring throughout the complex. Before anyone could even think to react, heavy blast doors slammed shut across hallways.

"Attention. Lockdown is in effect. Attention. Lockdown is in effect. Remain Calm."

As emergency strip lighting began pointing people in the direction of their nearest emergency assembly area, which in this case was the cafeteria, the blaring alarm died down to a background hum, making audible distant shouts of prisoners and wardens.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Sauls grumbled, Sure, voluntarily. They all say that after they've had their brains rewired. Mercenaries, so tired of mercenaries. Everything's fine and dandy as long as we get paid. Sickening... At least the military had some amount of honor. He sighed and put his helmet back on, his bad feeling about this prison now justified. He understood what that technology could do, especially if it became more advanced and faster. Never trust a man in power with a machine that could modify behavior.

He turn around and yelled over to Jim as he pulled out his pistol and set it on the table, "Can we kill them this time, Captain? I'm tired of just knocking them out."

"If it's voluntary, the breakout? And why the lockdown?" Otto mumbled to no one in particular as he checked to make sure he still had his weapon on hand.

"Are we getting paid for this, or is this just one of those situations where we're fighting for our lives?" Otto yelled above the noise.

There was a sudden strange distortion in the droning voice of the automated announcer and it went silent, before quickly reactivating, though the voice had a trange timbre to it which it hadn't posessed before.

"Do not be alarmed. We now control this facility. We wish no harm. We wish only to help. Speak and we will hear you, and reply through the speaker machines you have placed in each room. Please relax, we are here to help."
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

"Don't worry, we can write this off as overtime. Double pay!" Jim yelled enthusiastically to Otto. "And Otto, don't forget, it's still prison. I'd want to break out, too. You guys are the most jumpy bunch of skeptics I've ever met. Not everything is a conspiracy, you know. Sheesh!"

The Captain walked over to the door and inspected it for any signs of weakness. It seemed solid. Too solid to break down with conventional weapons. Maybe it could be hacked, maybe not. Otherwise they'd have to wait for the lock down to end, which Jim wasn't too content to do.
