Not counting 1 or 2 direct-connections by IP over 28.8 modems playing Ultimate DooM, it was my first semester of college when someone gave me Quake to try.  It had recently come out, so the community was still pretty small and many people knew each other when I joined it in September or October of 1996.

Roughly 4 years later, I briefly stepped back into the real world.  Just long enough to buy Unreal Tournament  ;D

The first regular online game experience I had was Doom on co-op mode.  I can still remember the day my friend was being a dink and taking pot shots on me when we're supposed to be on the same team, so I gave him an "accidental" face full of BFG nuke-age :).  Never got to play a good co op FPS with a friend until Halo waaaaaay later on, though.

My first actual decently invested and played online experience was Quake Team Fortress (the ORIGINAL one, not HL TFC).  We played this over Quake World via the Quakespy program (which would later become... *gasp* Gamespy!).  Ah knifing spies, concussion grenading up into the sniper nest to infect all their sharp shooters with anthrax, holding onto a capture lead despirately, those were the good old days.

Another bit of fun historical fact:  Action Quake 2 was made by some of the people who would go on and make the most played FPS in the world, Counter Strike.  Action Quake 2 was a helluva lot of fun at the time for multi player, and I invested time in it as well.

As for CS, I can remember watching that one "grow up" too.  I can remember actually corresponding via with one of the main modders (Gooseman I think) and suggesting a cheap on cost sniper rifle for when things are going bad for a team, and I can remember him writting back and saying "That's a good idea!".  Next beta patch of Counter Strike had the Scout, and its my favorite gun in CS for sentimental reasons :)

Hmmm.... I'd have to go Diablo on this one.  Followed shortly by Unreal Tournament, Diablo II, Dark Ages of Camelot, Crimson Skies (xbox), etc.

I don't know if it counts as "online" but at computer camp we had a LAN party of Marathon. I realized right then and there... that I suck at FPSes and that should a rocket launcer ever enter my hands, I and somebody else would die within 10 seconds.

My first online experience was C&C Red Alert. And boy was it hard to get working, but well worth it.

Wow, this makes me realize how long it's been since I was an active user here.

My first online gaming experience was with Unreal Tournament. Beating my friends all the time at video games made me arrogant, UT humbled me and taught me that I wasn't a gaming god.

I think it was Doom...perhaps it was Duke Nukem...sometimes I get those two confused. So long ago.

I'm bored at the mo so I thought I resurrect an old topic, this one still has a little left to give I think.

I thought back to my best multiplayer experience the other day, 4 player Perfect Dark on the N64 with a load of hard bots. It may not have be online but it sure was fun. Good times. :D

First online gaming experience: Starcraft. I was 6. I kicked every single foes ass. Cool style. I still play Protoss to this day because of it.
