Favorite Short Stories Sharing Corner Feelings Time
« on: October 08, 2011, 09:50:53 pm »
Much love for books, but I've always been a massive fan of short stories (both reading and writing them), and I thought they were worth some discussion. It's a form with a lot of notably good writing, and one capable of saying things longer stories often times aren't.

I was curious if anyone here had come across any particularly memorable stories or authors in the field, and if they had any favorites (and if they could link to them somehow, all the better).

One I've always enjoyed is "I, Rowboat" by Cory Doctorow: http://www.flurb.net/1/doctorow.htm
It's a great Post-Cyberpunk story, for anyone interested in the genre.

Then there's "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, which seems to be in nearly every general American short story collection I've ever seen. It's a classically great story though, and it's worth looking at if you haven't.
There's an audio reading of it here: http://www.newyorker.com/online/2008/11/17/081117on_audio_homes

Another one that comes to mind initially is James Van Pelt's "How Music Begins"
(Publication history: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?836369)
It's about a middle school band that gets abducted by aliens. Reading it reminded me why I love science fiction.
You could probably find an online version digging around a bit, but I don't think it's author sanctioned, and I'd rather respect the rights than post it here. Still, I recommend looking for it if you get the chance.

Anyone have any recommendations of their own?

Shortest story ever, by Ernest Hemingway!
For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.

Shortest comedy/religious/romance/mystery story ever!
Good God, the Queen's pregnant! I wonder who's the father.

Shortest horror story ever, by Fredric Brown!
The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door...

In all seriousness, there are quite a few I've enjoyed. The timeless The Monkey's Paw, as well as that one about the Ruum. If Asimov's I, Robot counts as a collection, then it's a veritable gold mine. And you can't go wrong with Ursula K. LeGuin!

I'm obsessed with sci-fi short stories. They're one of my favourite things in life. As such, I have an absolute ton of favourites... But I'm on my iPhone so I'll give you the one I was reading today. :P

The Road not Taken by Harry Turtledove
The story takes the premise that artificial gravity an hyperdrivesvare actually ridiculously simple technologies, so simple that they're usually invented around the age of sail for most civilisations. Somehow, humanity just missed it and took "The Road Not Taken." So what happens when aliens attempt to conquer the Earth?

There's a sequel too, but I can't find it online.
No way dude, you're trolling me.

Oh yeah, that's a great one. Turtledove should've made a whole series out of that.

Ah! I've read that one. It's great. I kind of want teddy bear aliens...

Also worth looking into is "The Seagull Army Descends on Strong Beach" by Karen Russell. I can only find a preview of it online, but it's worth getting the whole thing somewhere. It's showed up in a couple anthologies so far. (Best American Short Stories of 2010 is the one I own it in)

Anyone remember that short story linked on this forum a long time ago, where people form a colony in Mars, then some people are genetically modified by aliens to suit different planets? I thought it was really awesome, and would like to show it to a friend.

Anyone remember the name?

Or even better, have a link to it?

Are you talking about All Tomorrows? I'd try to find a link but I'm on my phone.

Wow, that was enjoyable! That's a really neat idea.

I've got a collection of novellas called "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume IIA". Most of the stuff in there is pretty good, although the only one I remember reliably is the story "Call Me Joe", which you may know as basically being Avatar but on Jupiter and minus the sex, and also far preceding it. Pretty good, that. They're all 35-60 pages though, don't know if that counts as a short story.

Also, here is a short story I read somewhat recently. It's the movie "The Thing" told from the point of the alien. Really fascinating read, I love reading about alien thoughts like that.

My favourite I've ever read would have to be The Path Not Taken by Harry Turtledove.  The whole concept of it is that technologies like artificial gravity and ftl travel are really easy and every other civilization in the universe discovers it around the age of sail.  Humans however did not and took a different path.  The story is about what happens if one of these other races found us.
