To cover the cost of renting the location, securing concessions, advertising, paying event staff...

It's a convention! Though, to be fair, it's kind of expensive for a con. Presales for PAX East only cost $55. Dragon Con presales are something like $65. Not sure how they ended up with $99, but it does seem a tad high. Comic Con is $100 for a four day pass, but that's Comic Con! You're gonna get a ton of stuff. It seems odd that Minecon would charge such a high price their first year. How much do they have to talk about? I mean really... and like you say, the costume options are a bit limited.

But they're probably banking on the fact that the Minecraft fans are somewhat fanatical about the game and would probably pay the high price without even batting an eye.

Blizzcon this year was 175$. It still sold out instantly. 99$ is NOTHING.

BlizzCon is also a time-tested event that has a legacy of being great. They can upsell their product because they've got a history.

PAX and ComicCon are all around events with many games. The exhibitors pay a fee to show their game there, that helps offset the price of admission.

MineCon is about one game and is set to celebrate the release of the game so the game devs are hosting it. Scrolls and Cobalt will be there too since they are part of the group. We'll also get to meet and maybe get autographs from Notch and the gang. Hopefully it will be well worth the cost of everything.

Wish everyone was going.

Metallic, isn't blizz con only like 5 years old?

I wouldn't call that time tested... Just blizzard being awesome.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

They're expecting over 30,000 people in attendance this year and have Foo Fighters headlining the show. They made it. They can charge more.

Wow, $99?  That's crazy expensive.  FanExpo is only 55 for 4 days.

I mean, I can understand the expense if you wanted to have it in Vegas, but why the hell did they opt to have it in Vegas then?

Also, for those who are going, definetly spend some time around the city.  It's very cool.  Catch some shows.  Also, there's this neat place just off the strip called the Gun Store.  You can choose from like, 200 different guns from the last 70 years and rent them out to fire on a range.  It's crazy busy though, I didn't even get the chance to get in.

A jacketed and tied event I'm sure, but it makes it really hard to handle the controllers.

I wish they'd settled on one of the other designs. D:

Can you take it off?
