The Cosplay Thread
« on: June 09, 2011, 02:39:23 pm »
So, some of you may remember when I posted a few pictures of myself cosplaying at last year's FanExpo in Toronto in a suit of Power Armor from Fallout.

Now, I've been working on and off on my next costume for the upcomming FanExpo in August on and off for the last few months. I'm just starting to get back into it, so I figure it's about time that we get a Cosplay Thread going, because I doubt I'm the only one interested in this sort of thing.

So, do any of you guys cosplay? Do you want to cosplay? What as? At which conventions? Have any tips or questions? This is the place for them.

Incidentally, in case you were wondering, I'm going as a Quarian this year.

Enough people tell me I look like David Tennant that one day I might, nay, must dress as the Tenth Doctor at some sort of geek convention.

I'm not sure your body could withstand the immense amount of coke required to act like him also. Maybe you're better off sticking with Hamlet.

I have not cosplayed before but if i did i think I would want to dress up in some steampunk styled stuff. Note that I had some awesome Halloween costumes in my day. Maybe if i ever dress up again for Halloween I will do a steampunk outfit.

On a side note it would be rather awesome to make a Naucean suit much like they did the raptors in "Walking with Dinosaurs Live".

If and when i go I would probably shave my hair and go with young revolver ocelot, I look like him and the costumes easy to pull off though, I would have to learn to all kinds of cool tricks with toy revolvers though or the costume just wouldn't be complete.

Ha, I'm pleased. I managed to track down a brief shot of myself in a cosplay montage video on Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_icWUXOAwk

I show up briefly at 1:53. I love going through all these videos. So psyched for this year's FanExpo.

Magfest has some good costumes too bad they have the worst contest ever for them.

http://botchamania.com/magfest-cosplay-roast-the-er-highlights/

A good bit of NSFW language

Not me but a great costume on the left

If I go to Otakon eventually I would cosplay but never at magfest.

That's because all the people who RP as Quarians are doing so because it means that it implies they could get some of dat Tali tail. And the kind of person who romanticises taking the virginity of a naiive young girl who could die from their nasty dick germs* is the worst kind of fanboy dickhead.

Well, I think it's more because we're given more insight into quarian culture than other races, Tali being the most likely to go on and on about the Fleet.

But, yeah, I imagine your point is valid to.

Looks awesome martyk! I like this thread!

It's a year old but this is my contribution. I was Bane for New York Comic Con. Shaving my head was...liberating. Loki is a friend of mine, guy in the headlock is a random guy I met there. But that was by far my favorite 'picture taken with a stranger' request. ;D And finding a sign that said 'Gotham' on it was just awesome luck.

I'm going again in October and have a few costume ideas, so there will be more pictures eventually...

edit: When going back through my olds posts (to see how long I've been gone again) I found I posted this already. But now there's a cosplay thread. So...yeah. Still appropriate I guess?

I got a little voice-changer that didn't sound great, but there wasn't enough time to find one that worked well. So I left it out and just told people I was really bad at impressions, which is true. And anyway, the only person I can remember asking me to do the voice was Zach Weiner. My voice was super-muffled anyway, but I didn't talk much so it all worked out swell.

So I'm late to sharing as usual, but about a month ago I went to New York ComicCon with my fiance and one of our friends. Nothing too exciting, but I'm pleased with how everything turned out. I was Superman (specifically this version):

The night elf is our friend.

And along with my fiance and our friend we did Pam, Lana, and Archer:

My fiance and I were also Hank Hill and Peggy, but we didn't get any good pictures of it...

Hahahah. No. I'm poor and lazy. A godzilla costume might be feasible with just one of those things, but together? Not a chance. ;D

If you actually look real hard, you'll find plenty of how-tos on costume making on the Internet.

So I'm on the workforce for the Emerald City Comicon all three days. That means I'll have lots of time to roam the floor after working! I'm thinking of putting together a Wayward Vagabond costume if I can manage, seeing as how I'm getting back into the wonderous world of Homosuck.

Both years at NYCC there were SO MANY HOMESTUCK COSTUMES (trolls? are the grey guys with orange horns called trolls?).

Having never read Homestuck* it was kinda annoying. Then again, it wasn't actively annoying in a way that ruined my experiences or anything. So I guess I can't really hold it against them.

*I forget, is that something y'all lynch for around here? Though, actually, that's a lie. I think I read the beginning, where there's like a kid and a weird dad and a birthday present or something? I don't know, I didn't see the appeal.

MOAR COSPLAY! So, for NYCC in October, I decided to do Deathstroke. Basically, this version from Arrow:

It's not gonna be an exact costume, because I don't have the resources, but this one is certainly the primary inspiration.

I've only worked on the mask so far, but I figured I'd share some highlights.

So NYCC was a few weeks back, and I thought I'd share some pics of the finished costume (well, kinda finished; I definitely plan on doing a v2.0 of the costume at some point in the future).

Some pics I took at the Batman area (they had all the different movie suits here, it was pretty cool).

Red carpet time! :P

Our friends that came with us. The girl on the right (Paladin from WoW if anyone's curious) actually entered Rhode Island Comic Con's costume contest and won the for the Novice Division! She goes crazy hardcore with her costumes.

At the last minute I also put together another of Slade's costumes (seen here with someone dressed as another character from Arrow that I found). Here's what the original looks like if anyone's curious.

Also, this isn't costume-related, but I might as well share it here. One of the most exciting things to happen at NYCC was winning autographs from the Bob's Burgers cast! I drew a picture for them to sign, they liked it (except for Bobby Tisdale, who voices teased me for not including Zeke in the picture).

And they also had posters on hand to be signed. I'm kinda making a fake smile, but I was super excited.

And it was at that moment that Martyk realized he forgot to post his previous cosplay.

I did a NCR Ranger at Fan Expo last summer.

You should post pictures of your process for making these costumes and props. You're very talented.

Also, you should see if you can get in touch with jhudson (he used to post here). He's a master at making these things.

I've got hella process pictures. I actually really made a point this time around to chronicle the stuff I did.

However they're all still on my phone and I am far, far too lazy to transfer them over. :I Perhaps tomorrow. Been meaning to do it for a while anyway.

Wowzers! Progress!

So the base of the mask used a Pepakura file. Basically papercraft. I modified it and removed some bits that I felt I could do better with other materials, and then put the thing together.

After I had the paper version, I cut out a bunch of pieces of craft foam and glued them over top to give it more strength. Pretty much everything I make uses this thick paper/craft foam combo, as it's really easy to work and has many different uses.

Looking cool!

I then painted it using this spray called Plastidip, which is amazing. It's meant for rubberizing tools, but it takes to the foam great, gives it a neat plastic texture, and is really easy to paint. The downside is it's damn expensive and I needed like, 4 cans of it. Worth it though.

Then I painted the mask. The two filters are both made of cardboard. The one of the side can be opened up and eventually I put a small CPU fan in there to help keep me cool.

Testing out the lenses.

Looking cool!

Then I made the helmet. Again useing the pepakura->thick paper->foam method, I then thickened it up with model magic clay, which was a pain in the ass as it likes to crack. Ended up reinforcing it with tons of hot glue. In the end though, it gave me a nice, lightweight helmet. To give it a neat bumpy texture, I used faux stone spraypaint.

For the coat I couldn't find any good patterns online for what I had in mind, so I decided to do it myself. I found a cheap coat at a thriftstore that matched the rough style I needed, and fit me well.

Then I chopped it up and made it into templates, adjusting it where I needed to. On a side note, I had never sewn before.

After getting tired of working on the coat for a while, I decided to get started on the vest. Couldn't find a good pattern for it so I just winged it and it seemed to work out well. Again, paper and craft foam for the base, and then I used those thick foam workmats to build it up.

After weathering.

I took a picture of everything I had gotten done up to that point. By this time I had built the side attachement for the helmet and wired it up with lights. A cable connects from it to the mask to power my fan.

More progress on the coat. In order to make it heavy enough, I ended up doubling up on fabric in most places. In then end I think I used about 6 yards of this heavy canvas cloth. It is a heavy coat.

Almost there. Coat was nearing completion. At this point the collar and cowl were just pinned on. I was having some issues with it and so was testing the fit.

Done. Taken just before leaving for Fan Expo.

Some details I didn't take pictures of apparently:

The arm guards are lashed on with leather cording.
The gloves are painted golf gloves. Couldn't find any in black. As the con went on the paint began peeling, though it gave them a neat weathered look.
The bullets on my belt are painted bolts with rubber tubing around them to give them thickness.
I also sewed a holster for my revolver. The revolver is a cap gun with the barrel extended with some piping.
I probably should not have been allowed my weapons in the con as they don't have safety caps on them and look quite real at a distance, but I snuck them in.
