Race Construction in Progress - Suggestions Needed
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:24:37 pm »
Ok, some of you remember what I said about making a new race, right? Ok, so I'm trying to think up a name for my race, but I'm having problems. The only name I can think of is Meridianites or Meridians. Any suggestions on a name for a squid/jellyfish-like race?

pick a culture you like and butcher its language, changing the spelling to make it seem more spacey. Thats what I do.

It is made up from the words for Squid (Ika) and Jellyfish (Kurage) in Japanese, so it isnt really my idea.

Hmm... Ok, I'm going to use Meridian-Ika or some variation of that word.

Ok, next thing. Can someone tell me what the lowest possible gravity I can put on a planet? I'm trying to make this race unique, but I'm don't want to majorly **** up.

I think 0.8 G, more or less...

Anything less and the planet would lose its atmosphere through sheer lack of sufficient gravitational pull.

Also, if you've yet to do so, also take note of the planet's magnetic field and distance from the parent star.

Stellar wind is a massive pain in the rear for making planets habitable.

Could you give an example?

There are some more, especially in the older pages, but this thread is the one on the front page and also happens to contain more than one example.

Alright, I'll go with 0.82 gees, I'm trying to make these guys a floater race.

Since they are floaters, they need something to keep them floating. I'm going with that they breathe a helium/carbon dioxide atmosphere, they use the helium to keep themselves floating while they use the carbon dioxide like we use oxygen.

Did I screw anything up yet?

Don't be too afraid to screw up.

Hmm, I'v been thinking of making a new race too.

I'v been imagining a race of Chaos Space Marines/Covenant/Mandalorians Hybrid... I.E Black spiky armor and wearing lots of skulls. *real skulls, as in trophies* super fanatical and all mixed in with a proud warrior race guy culture.

whoa, a floater race. props to you sir. floating just makes you seem less tangible and harder to write for. not sure why.

my Thuli was a floater. it worked because he lived on gas worlds and was 80% gas himself. course that was a long time ago and the idea never got off the ground, if you will excuse the pun.

Ok, I don't think I have to ask this, but is using sonar pulses as a way of "seeing" things and instead of eating plant or animal matter, use thermal energy intake reasonable?

depends what you mean by thermal energy, I dont know.

They float over a thermal vent (which is common on their homeworld and the planet is cold) and... Well actually, I may throw that idea out of the window, I dunno how I'm gonna make that work.

One of Saturn's [or Jupiter's, I'm not sure] moons has a geyser two times its diameter. Maybe you could just spread the force out a bit so that there are multiple smaller geysers instead.

Also, if you want to make a floater, I guess I could also add that planets with higher mass retain thicker and longer lived atmospheres due to both their usually higher gravity and more robust magnetic field. With thicker atmospheres, you need not be light as much as you need to have a good air bladder.

Though, yeah, thermal vents also sound good, though, I'm not sure how they'd go about moving from vent to vent.

Moves by puffs of released helium. Also, I'm not sure what you mean about geysers.

Geysers! Geysers Everywhere!

   ;D

Oh, and about the thermal intake, it could work as an energy source if your race uses a heat-to-electricity system and requires electric power to use or regulate some of its functions.

You'd still need to consume matter in order to grow and repair stuff, though, unless the guys can naturally convert energy into matter, which is, hard, to say the least.

a lesson I learnt while developing characters is don't focus entirely on their biology, technology, specialties, or really any other Novelty etc.

I'm not sure how to put this, but overal its should be more about their 'feel'. give them a soul.

culture is good, but I more mean 'the point' of your race, it's meaning, it's taste, it's drama and comedy. it will probably take a long time to figure it out. it took me four years at least; it keeps growing.

Great, now that you've said it, I feel bad about not knowing it.

Ok, onto reproduction. I'm making them asexual, but what production method do I use. And no, I'm not going to use eggs.

Tentacles spores?

That is, an individual will detach one of its tentacles while another does the same. They then fuse together said tentacles and the resulting hybrid would form into a womb-like structure. Said womb-like structure would then house the embryo created from the previously dormant sex cells that were stored in each individual's tentacles.

Fast forward several days/weeks/months/etc and a new individual is born.

How about it?
