A Tale of Civilizations II - Year 2 Season 4
« on: March 27, 2011, 07:37:22 am »
It begins...

A new year begins as the snow melts and the rivers start to flow.
Nature awakes from its slumber and life becomes easier.
In some regions however the loss of the winter is mourned
as its mildness is preferred before the hot summers.
While the majority of the human tribes move about the lands as the horses and the buffalo
some humans have lived settled for hundreds of years.
The success of this new lifestyle is prominent
as these tribes grow in population, mind and spirit for each year that passes.

- Amorusk -

The Amorcian lands are cold during each season but the summer.
Towards the end of spring, when the sun gaze upon the coniferous forests and hearthlands
the snow on the great mountain melt and the rivers overflow with cold, clear water.
The water of the huge strait is cold even in the summer and houses plenty of fish that feeds the Amorcia.

The Iefhuatti lands are warm and humid all around the year, with slightly milder winters.
The diverse lands contain both steppe, savannah and deep tropical forests.
The water of the big sea is rich with fish and the rivers flowing down
from the fire-spewing mountains is a good source of fresh water.

- Kestara Olek -

The Kestali lands are temperate with warm summers and occasionally snowy winters.
The Kestal have learned that the southern wind brings cold while the northern wind brings heat.
The powerful river that flows from the hill-lands is brown with a tinge of earth,
but the Kestal are used to it and it plays an important role as source of fresh water.
The Kestali lands are made up of deciduous forests and shrubland.

- Reigia -

The Reigian lands Are heavily forested with thick jungle.
The jungle and the nearby river contain dangerous animals
which leads to casualties every now and then.
It is very warm and extremely humid all around the year with frequent rainfall.
This rain is gathered from leaves and provides fresh water for drinking.
The food is sparse however, the Reigians feed of bugs, roots, plants and berries,
but it is often not enough.

Amorusk - Season of the Flowers (Turn 1)

The winter had been tough on the Amorcian people. It was true, they had lived through colder times, but this was the largest grouping of people anyone had ever known, and times had been harsh. But now spring was approaching, which was a time for celebration. The days were slowly getting warmer, different animals were coming out of their slumber, and the people were looking forward to this new year. There was something special about it.

Anesh Shamir sat in his wood home surrounded by his family. Kala, his wife, sat to his left while his daughter Kelem sat next to her. His two sons, Nidok and Sukla sat on his right, along with Sukla's wife Resha. Resha was a beautiful young woman and a worthy wife for his firstborn son. Sometimes it was hard to keep his eyes off of her, but Anesh managed. In time, Sukla would rule the tribe, if things went according to plan.

"I have called you together because I have decided what must be done." Everyone paid close attention to Anesh, as he was the leader and oldest male figure present. The patriarchy was deepseated within the Amorcian people, a tradition that stretched back to the times before people could remember. "This winter was harsh, and although we still have many, many people with us, we need to figure out a way to keep warm. We have all seen the fires that strike when an overly angry spirit from the storms bellows. True, these powers are great, but it is something that we must harness for ourselves. These things must be controlled and used to our benefit to keep us warm during the great winters of our land." Everyone in the room nodded in agreement, seeing the truth in these matters.

"Inform the tribemembers of this. Everyone must know that we require this power. In the meantime, everyone should carry out their daily jobs." Anesh concluded with that, standing up before everyone as they all waited for him to leave the room. After that, Sukla and Nidok stood up as well, leaving the women to clean up the bowls and plates that they had been eating off of. The household was both the domain and the responsibility of the female whereas the male ruled the outside. They were the hunters and the warriors. They were the guardians of the Amorcian people and the laborers the provided Amorusk with life.

Sukla sat with his wife Resha in their own house. They had been married a little over a year, but had just recently received a house of their own.

"This is excellent fish," Sukla said, looking over at his wife. Resha sat across the eating area from him, slowly consuming her own portion.

"Why thank you," Resha flashed a smile, making her all the more beautiful. It would not have been a stretch to say that Resha was the most beautiful person in all of Amorusk. And if that were the case, she was probably the most beautiful woman in the entire world. The thoughts of this beauty were running through Sukla's head as he finished up his meal. She was so quaint as she sat across from him, delicately bringing small bits of food to her mouth. She was very unlike the other people of Amorusk.

When Sukla was completely finished, he sat there staring at his wife. Much pressure had been placed upon him to have a child, and although he agreed with the idea, there simply hadn't been the time. But now that they had their own house and some form of privacy, Sukla knew that the time was fast approaching.

Nidok sat with his older sister Kelem on the beach, staring out into the ocean. The sun was still quite high in the sky, which provided some warmth, but the cold winds snatched away any hope of staying comfortable. Even still, the Amorcian people had grown used to this chill. To them, it provided some sense of home.

"What did you think of father's speech?" Nidok asked his sister, who was playing with a small plant she had plucked from the ground.

"I thought it was interesting. I don't like the cold that the winter brings, and it would be a good idea to find out how to stay warm." Kelem said and she tore off a bit of some leaf and let it float away on the wind.

"Yeah, but how will we figure that out? It is a good idea, but it just seems too difficult!" Nidok said, a hint of desperation in his voice. "I don't like being cold in the winter anymore than the next person, but it just seems impossible to stay warm when howling winds rip through the furs."

"Someone will find a way," Kelem said, not paying much attention to her younger brother. It was common for Nidok to ask many questions and then go on and on about the same topic for long periods of time. She had grown used to this and found that the best way to deal with it was to keep her answers short and let him run out of steam. Otherwise, he would continue to ask questions about something he didn't understand, which happened to be a lot of things. Nidok stared off out into the ocean, thinking about what he had said.

"What about you?" Nidok asked Kelem switching subjects completely.

"What about me?" Kelem asked, looking up from the plant she had been messing with.

"Well, you are now 17 years old, and have been for some time. That is the age of marrying. Have you been considering any suitors?" Nidok asked, a smile creeping across his face. Kelem was caught off guard. Of course she had been thinking of it, but for her younger brother to put it so bluntly and so suddenly had been a surprise.

"You know as well as I that it is father's decision," she said.

"Yes, I know, but you have to have your eye on someone!" Nidok said, getting excited. "You have to have a favorite person from the tribe. Even I do, and I'm still years away from being married." Kelem looked back down at the plant she was holding, her face blushing slightly.

"I don't know..." she trailed off, thinking of the men within the village. Some were definitely better than others, of that there was no doubt. And she had been thinking of it more and more lately, although no one specific had jumped out at her. There really wasn't a point to get her hopes up, especially because her father would end up deciding and not her. "I guess I just hope that he is a good husband, and someone that will accept me as their wife."

"You won't have to worry about that," Nidok said, standing up and stretching, "you are the Chieftain's daughter after all!"

Overview
Food Production: 100 WP
Maintenance: 9 WP
Research [Firemaking]: 100 WP

-Sukla and Resha try for a baby
-Anesh begins looking for a suitor for Kelem

Organization
The Amorcian people are very gender specific in their roles. The women's domain is mostly 'inside' concerning areas like the household and the village itself. The man's domain is more 'outside' such as in the wilderness, while also being more focused on the labor. There are very few exceptions (such as the royal family). This structure is very rigid and regimental.

Given that Anesh is a strict leader, there are punishments for those that do not follow the rules. These can be pretty harsh, depending on the situation. Enforcement of these punishments is usually carried out by volunteers since there is no standing military. What Anesh says, goes, for the most part, and very few have stood up against him and lived to tell the tale.

It had been another fortunately mild winter for the Kestali people, and their foodstocks remained high after a bumper autumn harvest in the previous year. The ruling family knew however that the people of this valley were growing in number and soon the hillside caves and a few modest stick and hide windbrakes would not be enough to shelter the people if harsher weather was to come. The sun was just setting over the distant mountains as Cahtu walked among the riverside fields a mile or so from his peoples homes above the flood plains, by his side was his loyal adviser Gemut, the high priest,

"Our ancient homes in the caves are quickly becoming crowded, it appears that the earth father never intended to cradle us in his arms for all eternity my king, but the omens have been speaking and it appears the forest mother is telling us that her children are ready to be taken into our stewardship. The modest stick structures we have relied on so far for penning in our pigs and deer could be made much sturdier if replicated with the trunk of a tree, and perhaps they could also be used to build shelter."

"Indeed Gemut, we should begin at once, the wise men will travel east to the forests with the priests to bless the ground and better understand how we will put the bodies of the Forest Mother's trees to our use. I will issue the edict after the tribe have gathered for prayer in the morning, surely we will be blessed by the earth."

*****

At the foot of the highest hill a panicked piglet darted among the legs of the men working the exposed rock, follwed by an excited Tok and subsequently his exasperated sister in law who swept him up in her arms and quickly apologised to the workers, before scurrying off back to her husband,

"I don't see why we must look after your mother's children while she spends her days smoking those herbs with the priests and getting nothing of value done"

Makram responded in jest,

"It's probably so we're ready to take care of my sisters child while she and her lover galavant about making a nuisance of themselves, because the gods know my sister isn't the girl to take care of that child she is carrying"

"Well i don't intend on spending my time taking care of other peoples children, i want a baby of my own one day"

"Don't worry about it, perhaps if it is to budensome the prieshood will adopt the child and we will never hear of it again..."

About 200 members of the tribe are dedicated to food production, farming grains, boars and pheasants along with collecting fruit from the trees that grow around the village. A few members of the tribe are members of the ruling council that the royals head, they consist of the priesthood and 'wise men' and deal with things like healthcare, research and future planning. The rest of the tribe work as labourers, building shelters and working the stone from the modest quarries the village operates. There isn't much overlap between those who work as farmers and those who work as labourers, they do know each other but it has been noticed that people work better if they can learn a trade, so that's what generally happens.

Reigia, Year 1, Season 1

As the sun rose over the jungle Reigians were already awake and working, using the early morning before dawn to get more difficult labours done before the heat of the day rose. Wrin, the priestess of the village, awoke later in the day however, and performed the waking ceremony at mid-day. The village went to the canoes and rowed out to the centre of the river, where handful of stones were tossed into the water, a practice they believed would keep monsters away from this area (particularly the leatherhides). "And with this day may the Shuk keep us safe." Wrin yelled the final words of the ceremony as customary and the canoes down stream echoed with the response, "Yetom." The canoes were then rowed back to shore, a leatherhide already lying along the beach just downstream but the warriors scared it off by throwing pebbles and rocks at it.
Wrin spent the better part of the day setting on a stump just outside the village. She had brought her people from their nomadic origins to their current home along the river. It was a hard task for a girl of her size, but she convinced them that the Shuk, a group of deities with various animal forms, would keep them safe. She had even convinced herself of their protection, creating a whole religion by accident. She stood from her perch and wandered to a point in the jungle where she could barely see the village and set her ear to a branch. *schuckschuckshuck* A grub, and a large one. She pulled up the bark and grabbed the white larva by it's end and pulled it out, the grub was nearly 4 inches long but she would describe it as huge to the others. She took her sharpened river stone and cut off the head, as she felt eating things that were still alive was a tad barbaric. She slurped it down with a smile and went back to the stump.

F'Lipo carried a log down to the shore and carved a canoe, one decorated with carvings of eyetails and furredmen. He rowed it down the river a ways and watched the river go by, shimmering beings just below the surface mocking him. He jumped into the river and tried to grab at one of the fish, struggling and missing with each swing of his arms he attracted attention. Then from the corner of his eye he saw a leatherhide in the murk, he tried to let out a scream but sputtered instead. He kicked himself to the surface and swamped his canoe so he could get back in. The leatherhide stuck its eyes above the water and floated alongside the canoe and F'Lipo stared it back in the eyes, glaring at the beast for interrupting his venture. He jabbed it with the paddle and quickly rowed away.

Krith and Hett tended the junglefowl that Grin had shown them, they didn't run away when they approached like most did, and Grin told them about how he had come here everyday for the past, Krith was busy collecting feathers instead of paying attention to his grandchild. This was the closest any of the Reigians had gotten to hens without a cockerel chasing at them. So Hett took the opportunity to grab some eggs and bring them back to the village, Grin still playing with some of the more active hens.

Overview
Food production: 100 Wp
Research [Domestication 2]: 80 WP
Research [Herb Lore 1]: 8 WP

-Hett, Grin and Krith begin migrating the junglefowl closer to the village.
-F'Lipo and Opek both try to impregnate Wrin
-Wrin teaches Witt about the duties of the head priestess

Organization
The Reigian society is based around jobs being assigned to those fit for the job. As such groups of gatherers are composed of the tallest while canoe makers are generally more squat and physically strong. All items within the village are open domain and there are very few rules, those being based around murder. If the rules are broken, which they rarely are, the punishment is never more than banishment but is more often a public discussion as to why it was a bad thing and that if they do it again they will be banished. Wrin is in charge of the punishments, using F'Lipo and Opek to assist when the 'criminal' does not take the punishment.

It is a good morning today, in the lands of the Iefhuatti people. The sun is warm, and the people are happy. The leader of this small tribal-esque society is Uekhuek. She is a wise leader, chosen over her less intelligent husband, Aangfux. Their two children, Miapuuf and Ngauair, tend to play around the village. The grandparents spend their days telling stories to the village children. Stories of creation myths, and of the origin of the Iefhuatti people.

“Long ago, in a world high above the se (forest), there lived the Desuk and the Daixii. They were always fighting each other, and spilled a lot of blood. This blood fell from the world above the se, and when it landed, it was as hard as a seed. These seeds grew into the Iefhuatti people.”

“Long ago, before the times of the Desuk and the Daixii, the world was a long series of discs, which were always distinct, and never interacted with each other. But one day, a Desuk was born on one side of a disk, and a Daixii on the other. This caused the discs above to come crashing together, obliterating them, raining down death from above. Some of these broken pieces fell away to become the world we are on now.”

Fishing is an important activity to the Iefhuatti people, as is pottery, sometimes together. The Iefhuatti people will sometimes carve fish symbology on the sides of their water pots.

Organization: Uekhuek leads the people, while Aangfux is in charge of the hunting parties. There are currently no military, but Aangfux wishes for there to be one, but Uekhuek disagrees, as there is no one who has bothered them before now. Women are the leadership, and the men are the muscles, as they are seen as inferior.

Season of the Sun

The mysteries of life are evasive, but the reoccurrence of the summer is definite.
The peoples of the colder lands rejoice
as the hard grip of winter is but a memory for months to come,
while the peoples of the warm lands despair
as the merciless heat renders labor under the day a torture.
Ironically the season of the sun becomes
the season of the night for these men and women.
The spring is past and the green of the land is fully manifested.
For a particular tribe the past month offered insight into the mysteries of life and it's past,
but seldom truth is fully uncovered

- Solutrea -

The Solutrean lands are seasonally varied
with mildly snowy winters and adequately warm summers.
The land shifts from rolling hills to deciduous forests,
from dark, rocky shores to cobblestone ridges.
The shiftiness of the earth
is sometimes so intensive that the earth itself shakes
The warm winds roll in from the north,
the cold winds roll in from the south.
The Solutrean lands are lands of polarity.

Amorusk - Season of the Sun (Turn 2)

Anesh sat at the center of his house with his son Sukla next to him. For some time they had been discussing the events of their people, specifically the progress of attaining the fire. There had been several occasions where they had managed to get fire, but nothing to the point where they could make it themselves. And even the fire they were able to get, they never managed to keep it running for long. It was progress, but there was still some work to be done. However, Anesh was happy with the results, which put most of the townspeople (including Sukla) at ease.

"You've done an excellent job so far, my son," Anesh said, flashing a smile at Sukla. This was a very rare occurrence for Sukla, and slightly caught him off guard. However, he was a true Amorcian and managed to keep his emotions hidden. Instead, he dipped his head low towards his father.

"Thank you very much, father. I try my best to follow your lead." In Amorcian culture, parents were the epitome of power, no matter their stature in society. Had Anesh's father or mother still been alive, he would have been obliged to obey any order they gave. It was almost a form of unwritten law. However, the older an Amorcian got, the less likely they were to order their children around. Around the time that their children started having children of their own, the parents would refrain from constantly making demands. Puberty and marriage were both special points in a person's life as they signified a turning point, but when a someone had a child of their own, that's when they were truly considered to be an adult.

In some cases, outsiders noted that this system seemed lacking. If parents are the highest form of law in the land, what causes people to follow the chieftain? To an Amorcian, this was just a dumb question. Everyone knew that the parents themselves were subjugated to the will of the chieftain, and so were their children. In this way, the chieftain ruled over his people and held a strong grip over his people. That was just the way of the Amorcian people.

"Yes, there was much progress made on the question of fire within the last season," Anesh said, motioning for Sukla to return back to normal. "But there is something else that I was thinking about," Sukla perked up his ears at this. It was a very rare occurrence for his father to involve him in matters of the tribe, but it had become more and more common as of late. And it wasn't that Sukla minded, in fact he enjoyed having his say in matters of the tribe. It was probably because he had casually hinted to his father that he and Resha were attempting to have a baby. And even though it hadn't happened yet (at least, Sukla didn't think so), the very idea that Anesh might have a grandchild soon was obviously affecting his perception of his firstborn son.

"And what were you thinking of father?" Sukla asked, going along and saying what his father expected him to say.

"Our tribe is growing. There are more people now than every before, at least for as long as I can remember. And sometimes in our history we have come across other tribes and there has been warfare. Those times were always bloody, but the Amorcian people have always triumphed. But now I wonder. Since we have settled down we need protection now more than ever. We do not have movement to rely on getting us away from stronger enemies. This place has become our home and we need to protect it as such. Tell me, would you let someone come into your house uninvited?" Anesh asked his son, already knowing the answer.

"No, father."

"Indeed. And it is because of this that I believe we need people to focus on this problem. I want you to carry out this action."

"Father?" Sukla asked, understanding the basic idea, but still unsure of the specifics.

"I want you to pick and train 19 other men to be permanent warriors. These men should be the strongest and most loyal men of the tribe. I want them to be able to fight with any weapon that we can make. I want them to be expert spearmen, deadly with an axe, and the best marksmen within Amorusk. And I want you to lead them," Anesh said, looking at Sukla. "But more importantly, I want you and these men to keep order within Amorusk. I don't know if you have noticed, but things have been getting out of hand as of late. We need you and these men to keep order within the tribe. Without you, the tribe will fall apart into petty squabbles that could escalate into all out blood feuds." Anesh paused for a moment thinking back on his brother before coming back to the present. "We need order Sukla."

"Yes father," Sukla said. He had noticed his father's pause, but didn't mention anything about it. There were some things that you didn't bring up, no matter what. "I will do the best that I can."

"Excellent..." Anesh said as he trailed off into deeper thought. Sukla waited several moments before quietly leaving his father with his thoughts.

Kala sat with Kelem in one of the back rooms of the house. The men had needed the large room for their conference, so the women had let them have the room, preferring to talk between themselves anyway. When there were only women around, Amorcian females tended to be more open with each other than when men were present.

"So, Kelem," Kala said, looking over at her daughter, "have you been looking at the suitors within the town?" Kala was smiling as she asked it. Kelem blushed a bit, but managed to hide most of it. She wasn't in full control of her expressions yet, since she was only 17.

"Yes, a bit," she said as she turned her attention to cleaning some of the bowls that were in the room. Kala paused for a moment, before asking another question.

"Anyone in particular?"

"No."

"Well, what are you looking for in a man?" Kala asked, trying to get at least something from her daughter. Kelem paused as she tried to get rid of a particularly stubborn stain on a bowl.

"I don't know," she said after some time. "I guess I just want a man who's strong, but caring. Isn't that all any girl could want?" Kala smiled at her daughter.

"That would be a very good man, but he is probably harder to find than you would think."

"Plus the fact that father must decide for me..." Kelem said, showing a small bit of reluctance about that.

"Oh, I wouldn't worry about that," Kala said. "I think I may be able to influence his decision in some way..."

A Bananas am not good at role playing at all so A Bananas tried to do more of a documentary overview of the Solutrian people and their culture. A Bananas also attempted to do a picture of their appearance but it kind of sucked and A Bananas gave up on it.

Solutria - Year 1, Season 2

Appearance
Solutrians are an interesting race. They tend to have black hair (which turns gray when they get old) and tan skin but have blue or green eyes. Their features most resemble people of southeast Asia or the Philippines. Males have difficulty growing facial hair and only can produce goatees or spare beards. Both men and women will grow their hair long, however some men will shave their heads with primitive stone blades. Their clothing is very primitive and is more or less just woven grass skirts. They do not wear shoes yet and have very tough feet since walk barefoot. Women will sometimes put flowers or feathers in their hair to for fun and to look pretty. Both men and women will sometimes paint themselves with ash or other natural pigments. This self expression can be spiritual in nature as well as functional to show who that are and/or what they do.

Culture
Solutrian are a polite and respectful people. Their philosophy is to leave things better than they found it. They take great pride in their work and are very generous. They are very in tune with nature and look to it for guidance and inspiration. They try not to waste anything they take from nature and if they do have extra they will try to give it back. For instance if they cannot use all the parts of a fish they will throw it back into the sea and hope it will come back as to them again when they need it.

Diet
Souutrians are heavily dependent upon the sea for their food. While they do occasional gather from the land their main food is seafood. They wade in the surf and tidepools looking for shellfish, crustaceans and other invertebrates that are easy to catch. They will also eat seaweed and other marine flora. While they will sometimes eat food raw they mostly cook their food on sticks held over the fire. Since there is no major rivers nearby and they cannot drink from the sea they drink for small brooks and streams. These small brooks and streams are their only source of water and thus are kept as clean as they can. All waste is either buried away from the drinking water because no one wants to drink water where someone pooped.

Exploration
Beyorg has recently sent out a few scouts in canoes to the North to search for food and other natural resources. They are instructed to stay by the coastline in case of storms and to actively scavenge for food along the way. They are to return at the end of the season to report what they have found.

Organization
Solutrian society is based around a persons natural skills and interests. As children they are shown how to do a variety of skills and end up doing whatever skills they are naturally best at. Unlike most tribes members can end up doing a job completely different than their parents. This includes the “royal” family. There is no guarantee that Zia or Guyan will become the next leaders of the tribe. Beyorg is only a leader for as long as the public thinks he is worthy of this position. Thus Solutrian leaders do their best to make the people happy and loyal to him. While there are always those in opposition the majority of the population will protect and defend their leader.

Origin Myth
The Solutrians believe that the world was once all water and a great sea turtle came to the surface and made the first land. The turtle is so big and slow that it takes it all day to swim around the world and that's why the sun goes down at night. They also believe that earthquakes are caused by the turtles swimming and most of the time he swims smoothly but other times he hits currents and shakes everything on his back. To honor the sea turtle they will not eat them, however every year when the sea turtles come to the beach they will take from the bounty of eggs that they lay. If there is a good bounty of eggs then they know that the great sea turtle is happy and healthy.

Royal Family
The royal family did not start out royal. Beyorg was just another villager back when the village was small. His father was a warrior who helped protect the current tribal chief and his mother was a gatherer who helped gather mollusks and other invertebrates from the sea. Beyorg has 3 other siblings, 1 older brother, 1 younger brother and a younger sister. He never got a long with his older brother and they would constantly fight and bicker. One day they went out swimming in the ocean. They saw some sea lions and decides to go see them. However from below a shark came and bit Beyorg's foot. His brother tried to help him and began to drag him to shore. However the blood soon attracted other sharks and Beyorg's brother got eaten instead. Beyorg is now very remorseful that his brother died trying to save him and he is still sad that he always argued with him. He still has the scare of the bite marks on his foot and walks with a limp. This limp constantly reminds him of that day. This event has shaped him and lead to him becoming leader of the tribe, but that's another story.

Shelter
Solutrian shelters are very primitive and are more or less lean-to shelters made of sticks and bough. Their beds are basically made of dry grass and moss. When the weather gets really bad such as in the winter they will move more inland to the sheltered caves to keep warm and dry. However this is risky since the earth shakes often and they are cautious to stay too long in fear that a cave-in will fall on them.

Tools and Technology
The Solutians most important technological feat is the canoe using both fire and primitive stone tools they make simple dugout canoes. These take great skills and effort, thus they are prized by the tribe. The canoes themselves are made from fallen logs and are more or less hollowed out so 1 or 2 people can fit inside. If done wrong they can burn thorough the bottom and ruin the canoe. Thus it takes years for them to master the skill of canoe building.

A small camp of labourers and community intellectuals was now established at the edge of the woodlands not far east of the cave homes. Alam had been sent with his wife to bless the work of people there, who were seeking to better understand the will of forest goddess, and how to exploit the resources she offered. Alam had been watching a man demonstrate how inadequate the tools they had were for the task by helplessly smashing the sharp edge of a rock into a tree trunk in a vain attempt to cut through,

"You're just not trying hard enough boy,"

Alam scalded the worker before grabbing the rock from him and smashing it as hard as he could into the tree, it put up more resistance than he thought and he quickly dropped the stone as it dug into and cut his palm and parts of the sharpened edge crumbled away.

The worker spoke up;

"Meshka thinks if we could find a way to swing the rocks, then they would hit hard enough to break the flesh of the oaks, but we need time to design and make the tools sir, and we could do with some stronger rocks, or perhaps we could burn through the trunks of the tree"

"Ok then, I'll see what we can do to help, Cahtu wants this project advancing as fast as possible so keep working,"

With that Alam walked away looking slightly embarrassed, to accompany his pregnant wife back to their home.

****

"At first the demon jaws frightened the farmers lord, but we have seen the stone is hardy and beaufitful, these are no curse, they are gifts from the Earth Father"

Cahtu inspected the stone the humble worker had placed down before him, it was jet black and flecked with glittery blue where it had been polished, an edge had begun to be worked into it but had taken the best craftsmen in the tribe several days of continuous work to reach this point, and with just a few of the rocks they had extracted. The stone had been uncovered with the tilling of the soil around the river shore, when the farmers had uncovered it they found the stone formed in jagged circles all across the field. At first when the priests were called and shown the uncovered rock formations they had interpreted it as being a bad omen, indicating the coming wrath of the Earth Father, but weeks passed and nothing had happened so the priests were sent to look at it again, this time returning to tell the workers to begin extracting and working the stone.

Cahtu passed the stone back,

"This is great news indeed, tell the workers we want more of these rocks to be shaped, we will send the axes east to the forest camp. You are dismissed noble tribesman,"

The tribesman gave a quick bow and turned to leave the chieftans cave and return to work.

****

It was the eve of the summer solstice and Mehtu was overseeing the priests preparations for the ceremonies the next day,

"which flowers have you gathered to be burned as an offering to the sun mother my children"

She inquired in her serene and calming voice as a line of priests walked forward silently each leaving a sample of the flowers they had collected, there were many; ranging from blazing orange lilies to sky blue buttercups, Mehtu sighed,

"It seems almost a shame to burn such beautiful things, but the sun mother will be pleased with what we have gathered and hopefully grant our farmers with bountiful crops"

With her blessing the priests and their apprentices began laying the flowers across the pyre of sticks on the rocky outcrop that faced the postion of the morning sunrise and that would be lit to greet it.

The Kestali have many gods and goddesses, referred to as mothers and fathers as they are believed to have conceived all of mankind at the dawn of time so that humans could inhabit their domain. each god or goddess controls a different aspect of nature, from the sea to the storms. There are no formal worship practices but instead they are thanked throughout peoples daily lives and at specific times of the year, for gifts that are perceived to be given by them. When the Kestali undertake any endeavour it is preceded by  requests for the respective god's blessing and the priests seek to understand the world by interpreting the will of the gods.

As the Leaves Blush

The light and warmth of the summer is gone,
And many men and women mourn as they see the pride of nature wither.
Though there are regions where nature never dies nor sleep,
no, here nature merely breathe out briefly;
allowing the humans of these lands to do the same.
Elsewhere though the winds from the south are temperamental and inexorable,
preaching the coming of a cold winter.

Amorusk- Season of the Leaves (Turn 3)

Sukla stood in front of the twenty-nine men selected before him. Originally his father had only wanted nineteen, but after Sukla had shown their effectiveness at maintaining order, more had been given over to him. Each one of the men held their own personal bow, along with a spear of their choice. These men were the cream of the Amorusk crop. They had shown their strength and loyalty on multiple occasions and that was the reason they were here. That was the reason why Sukla had chosen them.

“I know that each of you is a good shot with the bow and arrow, probably the best in the tribe. But we’ll have to be better than that. We’ll have to be the best in the tribe. That is why I have called you here today. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the targets,” Sukla said, motioning towards the forest edge where a variety of humanoid stands were setup. “Before the day is through, each man will have to be able to hit their target three times, in a row.” The men looked at each other, somewhat surprised. They had been expecting something a bit more challenging. Sure, they were a bit of a distance away from their targets, but that wasn’t impossible. It might take a little bit of time, but no more than an hour.

“From that hill,” Sukla finished, pointing towards a hill that was a couple hundred yards further back. This caught the men’s attention. From atop the hill they were looking at a distance that was well beyond the reach of even an expert bowman. Sukla smiled to the group of men.

“What, you thought this would be easy?” he asked them. “Anyway, there are some other guidelines that must be obeyed. I have collected everyone’s quivers because each man will only be allowed three arrows at a time. When each man has shot the three arrows, they must run down to their target and retrieve them.” Sukla looked over the men, checking for any signs of weakness. None appeared. These had been the right men to choose. “Each man goes until he hits the target three times in a row. He will not be allowed to stop until that time. And remember, I’m in this right alongside you. Even though I’m your leader, I must go through the same tasks that you must go through.” Sukla looked over the men one last time before taking off at a sprint towards the hill. “Let’s get this done!”

“Must not want to get home,” one of the men mumbled under his breath to the laughter of everyone else.

Nidok marveled at the fire before him. It had taken some time, almost two whole seasons, before the tribe had unlocked the secrets to making fire. Now almost everyone had been taught how to create fire, including Nidok. There had been a fair number of accidents, but most of these had been handled without too much trouble. Several people throughout the tribe had a number of burns on their bodies, but that was the worst of it.
And it was the perfect timing. The Season of the Leaves had arrived, and with it a growing wind that brought a chill to the lands of the Amorcian’s. But with the power of fire, people were given new hope in a normally bleak time of the year. Now they would be able to ward off the worst of the freeze with fire, and continue to function within their homes like normal people.

Nidok poked the fire with a stick, moving some of the logs around within the fire. Ever since he had seen the first blaze created, he had been entranced, wondering how it worked. At the same time, he wondered what else could be done with it. He knew that it could burn through things, both living and dead. Rocks would not burn (normally), but they would heat up. You had to be careful around those heated rocks. The first time Nidok had tried burning a rock, he had ended up with scalded fingers after trying to pick it up out of the fire.

Nidok also knew that water put out fires. That had been the most interesting thing. And the scariest thing… that was something completely different. Nidok had snuck off into the forest to escape prying eyes.  While alone he had made a small fire pit, lining these with rocks from the river. Since the rocks didn’t burn, they made a nice wall to keep the fire contained. He had spent several hours messing around with the fire, trying to learn more about it. He had poked and prodded it, testing out which things burned and which things didn’t. In the end he had grown bored with the whole experiment and had collected water in some of the bowls he had brought along with him. This is when the greatest discovery had happened. While throwing water onto the fire, some of it managed to splash onto the rocks themselves, which he knew had been hot from the fire. Great columns of steam came rising from these rocks, scaring the life out of Nidok and sending him running off. They had looked like spirits, and the hiss they emitted startled him even more. If it hadn’t been for his great curiosity, it was unlikely that he would have returned to the fire pit, but venture back he did.

He repeated this action several times, slowly overcoming his fear of the hissing spirits from the rocks. They were obviously nice spirits, thanking him for freeing them from the rocks, or else he most surely would have been killed long ago.

But this is what haunted Nidok. He knew that something could be done with this discovery. Maybe this could even be used to help his people through the winter. Nidok continued to poke the fire with his stick.

Kelem sat across from her new husband in their new home. It was a beautiful little house, one that was neither too big, nor too small. They had gotten it because of Anesh, and it had been given to them as a gift from her father after their marriage ceremony. The celebration had been small (nothing like the party that had been held after Sukla’s marriage), but it had been perfect nonetheless.

To be honest, Kelem couldn’t have been happier. Bakvi was the perfect man for her. She was strong, just like she had wanted, as well as compassionate. And besides that he was quite energetic, which was definitely a plus.

“Would you like something more to eat, husband?” Kelem asked, offering up another bowl of fish.

“No, but thank you for the offer,” Bakvi said waving it away. Kelem blushed at the slight breach of etiquette. There had really been no reason for him to thank her. It was just her duty as a wife to offer her husband more food. In fact, it would have been horrible manners if she hadn’t done it.

“So,” Bakvi said, setting aside his bowl and smiling at Kelem, “what is it that the leader’s family does around here? I am part of that now, aren’t I?” he asked. Kelem smiled at him, remembering the marriage ceremony. Her father actually loved Bakvi, which was probably the reason that he had chosen Bakvi in the first place. Her father liked him so much, that he had even allowed Bakvi to take the Shamir name. This wasn’t very common at all, but given Anesh’s leadership status and the fact that Kelem was his daughter, the tribe had accepted it as normal. It was nice to have a father that liked his son-in-law. Her brother Sukla, on the other hand, wasn’t a big fan of her new husband. They were too similar, which could have been a good thing if Sukla hadn’t been such an obnoxious fool. He was constantly claiming that Bakvi was only in the marriage for power. Sukla only saw him as a potential threat rather than an ally.

"Well," Kelem said, "my father may have some work for you, depending on what you want to do. I'm not sure what it would be, though. You can really do whatever you like..." Kelem trailed off as she looked over at her husband.

"Well, what about this?" Bakvi picked up Kelem and walked off to their bedroom, laughter coming from them both.

Anesh sat with his entire family, including the new addition Bakvi, around the main room of his house. They had all had a small meal, prepared by Kala, and were now sitting around the small fire that had been made in the floor. A small hole had been cut in the roof to allow the smoke to escape. Everyone was waiting expectantly for Anesh to speak.

"Thank you everyone, for being here and sharing this meal with me. But the real reason I called you all together is something that you might have already guessed. The Season of the Deep Freeze is coming, and we must be prepared to meet its challenge. All of the villagers must be reminded of this. There is no doubt that they already know of its coming, but they must be warned to prepare nonetheless. Being able to make fires will help a great deal, and the discovery of that will go a long way to helping us survive. But there is something else that worries me. The fish are like us. They prefer warmth. When the winter comes, their numbers dwindle, and life becomes hard for us. Because of this, we must find another source of food." Anesh paused for a moment, as if trying to think of the answer then and there. When he came back, he motioned towards Sukla and Bakvi, "That is why I want you two to figure out a way to bring more food to the village. We have lived off of fish and various plants for some time, but now I think that the great beasts of the forest can be of use to us. Seeing as you, Sukla, have already begun training men in the art of war, you should be able to work something out." Sukla nodded, although inside he was more than a little annoyed. He didn't want anything to do with Bakvi, but now his father was forcing them to work side by side. "And you, Bakvi. Now that you are part of the family, you will become one of the warriors among Sukla's group." This caught Sukla's attention and lifted his mood a bit. "You will be second in command."

"You honor me too much," Bakvi said, lowering his head.

"Nonsense!" Anesh said with a laugh, "You are more than a worthy candidate. If you are good enough to marry my daughter, you are good enough to be among the warriors. But I want you to specialize on surviving in the forests. Learn its ways. Our people have always stayed close to the coast, but we must learn how to survive anywhere if we wish to survive at all." Everyone sat in silence for a moment as those words sunk in.

"That is all I have for you now." Everyone stood up to leave the room, everyone except Nidok and Anesh who waited for everyone to leave. Anesh looked at his youngest son, raising his eyebrow a bit.

"You have something you wish to discuss, son?" Anesh asked, wondering what Nidok had been up to.

"Yes, father. It involves something that I discovered the other day," Nidok said, excitement running through his voice.

"Well, what is it?" Anesh asked, humoring the boy more than anything. Nidok loved to explore and loved to talk about what he had found. More often than not, it was something dealing with bugs or some other minor details. But as Anesh listened, Nidok went into great detail about the fires and the spirits within the rocks.

Maybe the boy has stumbled across something greater? Anesh asked himself.

Architecture
The architecture of Amorcian homes is not very special, especially their earlier designs. The earliest homes were small mounds dug into the earth, as it provided natural protection from the cold climate the Amorcian people lived in. They learned of this by copying several species of animals that lived within the area.

As time passed, the Amorcian people became more skilled at constructing homes. The discovery of logging subsequently led to the use of wood that was larger than branches picked up off of fallen trees. They had not fully come to terms with using entire trunks to construct houses, though. That would come later. For the time being, the Amorcians used strong pieces of lumber to create the walls and roofs of their homes. Large holes would still be dug for the flooring and lower half of the homes, to provide the natural insulation, but the Amorcian homes slowly began to rise up from the ground thanks to advancing technology.

Solutria - Year 1, Season 3

Vabat
The Solutrians had never encountered another tribe for as long as the tribe can remember. This first contact with a new and completely different culture was a bit of a shock to the Solutrians. While there were some frighting amongst themselves they had never encountered such a violent culture. This caused fear and confusion within the population. Beorg during this time kept clam and level headed. He reassured the people that it must be a misunderstanding.

Beorg: Like a startled animal, they must have attacked out of defense and fear. We must show them that there is nothing to fear from us and show we are friends, not enemies.

Diplomacy
Beorg organized a diplomatic mission back to Vabat people. To show that the  Solutrians were friends and not enemies they would send food, gifts and even a canoe as an offering of peace. The party was ordered to to their best to gain the trust of the Vabat people. In fact if offered they would appointed an ambassador stay with them and requested one from the Vabat people to come back and be a guest in the  Solutrian lands. However if things went bad they were still ordered to leave the gifts for them and retreat with haste.

Exploration
If the Vabat people were found in the north then what kind of people would they find in the South? Beorg send another scouting part to explore the South in the same manner as they did the northern expedition. As before they would fish as they went along the coast in their canoes and would return by the end of the season.

Funeral
A funeral was held to commemorate the 3 scouts who were killed by the Vabat. Their funerals are done on the beach at sunset. Normally when someone dies their body is put in a canoe, covered in sticks, grass and decorations and then set on fire. Once set on fire its pushed out to sea. However in this case since they died in battle they only were able to bring back some of the bodies and thus an empty canoe was sent out anyways. There was much morning and somber singing until the canoes sink into the sea.

Beorg's Past
Beorg recalls this father's death at the funeral. As said before his father was a warrior who protected the chieftain of the village. When Beorg was in this 20s and had just got married to this wife Tanana his father was killed by a man who wanted to kill the chieftain at the time. The disgruntled man was blocked from attacking the current chieftain by Beorg's father. As they fought on the ground the man took a sharp stone dagger and sliced his father's belly open. The rest of the guards took the man down and he was killed soon after but his father was too badly wounded to recover and bled to death there. Beorg was angry, sad and proud all at the same time about his father's death. The chieftain at the time held a great funeral for his father and his family were awarded extra food that season for his father's bravery. Beorg knew at that moment that it was only a matter of time until another disgruntled citizen who would come to try to kill the chieftain, so he begin to campaign as the new leader of the village. One who would hear the voices of the people and would not drive people to kill their leader. However the path to his rise to power is another story.

Nita's Baby
Nita began to be nauseous by the end of the season. She though she was sick but Tanana knew better. She could tell as a mother of two that Nita was pregnant. This was a happy day for the Klov family, for this would be Beorg and Tanana's first grandchild. While there would still be a few seasons before the child would arrive they prepared for baby. Nita was taught what to do by Tanana, while Beorg prepared Guyan on how to be a father and what responsibilities that brought with it. For with so much death in the village it was good to know new life was coming. Meanwhile Zia was a bit jealous of her little brother and vowed to get pregnant by the end of the season.

Life and Death Myth
The Solutrian people believe that a persons spirit originates from the sea and goes back into the sea when they die. This is why they build funeral canoes and send them out to sea. As the night falls upon the sea, the spirits are able to go deep down into the bottom of the sea where "spirit world" is. Spirits can return to life in new bodies, however they cannot get back on their own, other seas creatures like fish and  marine invertebrates transporter the spirits. Thus when they eat seafood they believe that they gain some of spirit and wisdom of the ancestors. Sometimes there is so much spirit in a woman that they are able to have a child. Men on the other hand cannot become pregnant, however they believe that they can give excess spirits from their bodies to females by having sexual intercourse.  Thus women who are trying to have a child are encourage to eat lots of sea food and sex with their husbands to make sure they gain enough spirits to make a new life.

A lot had been learned from the forest over the last couple of seasons, some of the fruit harvesters had moved up here permanently and workers had skinned the bark from the trees and chopped their low hanging branches to use as fuel for the fires. Some special stones had been found filled with spiral patterns and they would make good bartering, at least for the workers willing to take the time to find and polish them. It was autumn now though and most people had given up their day jobs to bring in the harvests and butcher the meat to store over winter so the forest was quiet, only the elites and the priests had time for leisure.

Mehtu had made his way west, alone in the early morning. A cold mist swirled low among the trees and Mehtu crept slowly clutching the javelins to his chest. It was true that not many people still hunted, and it certainly wasn't going to provide enough food anymore, but Mehtu had been taught by his father to honour the old ways. The stag he'd been tracking for hours kept its head bowed in the clearing, chewing the grass and then occasionally glancing for predators, before ducking back down again. Mehtu was silent as he swept from tree to tree closer to his prey, it was a magnificent sight, strong and tall; not like the small and docile deer they kept back on the farms, and would make a fine trophy.

In a moment Mehtu dived into the clearing, the weight of his body put behind the throw, the stag darted - but too late, the power of the spear drove deep into its right thigh and caused the beast to collapse, writhing on the floor. Mehtu approached confidently grabbing the animals snout and drawing his knife across the neck to bleed it. He worked quickly to remove the head, his trophy, the skin, for a blanket, and all the meat he could feasibly carry back alone, the rest would be left to the wolves and crows.

****
Autumn had always been a time for people to celebrate and have fun before the winter months made going outside uncomfortable at best, and this winter looked to bring snow for the first time in years with cold southern winds boding badly.

The crude barley drink that Alam now sat with had been discovered only a few years ago, it was warming and clean, and had the surprising effect of making the men a lot happier and more talkative. Makram and a few captains of the working crews had joined Alam for a drink and a celebration, elsewhere Eshia was giving birth and Alam was, for once, sociable and happy.

"To my beautiful wife and the future of Kestara!"

He stood up and cheered; the others joined him in a toast and swallowed what remained of their drinks,

"So what will you name your child the sir?" One of the older labourers queried,

"I was thinking 'Aeta'*, in honour of the riches we have found in the eastern forests"

"A proud name brother, just promise me Alenia won’t end up mothering it for you" Makram joked,

"Well she is a good mother to our younger brother, Mak, I could only hope she'd have an influence on my child,"

A short statured priest approached the group to announce the news, "The child has arrived sir, a baby girl, as beautiful as the sunset - you should come to see her,"

He beckoned Alam through the door, and the rest of the men left to their beds, a new member of the family was always a joyous occasion, but in the harsh winter to come it would be a challenge.

History:

The Kestali had lived for generations as hunter gatherers up and down a few hundred miles of river bank and forest land, part of which being where they now live. A population boom in the last century or so caused a steep rise in the need for food and some form of social structure. Around the time of Mehtu's grandfather’s rule as high chieftain the tribe finally settled in the caves they use as homes, although most still hunted at that time. Back then somewhere near a hundred people could call themselves Kestali; they survived by hunting but could at that point grow their own cereals and vegetables. Although Mentu's father was very nostalgic for the old ways, he was the visionary who really developed the agriculture and domestication infrastructure that has let the people prosper.

The priesthood, now an important part of Kestali society, are largely linked with the royal family but grew up quite separately, the joining of the two entities happened well before living memory around the time of the settlement in the caves, when they had to find a home with those they had once traded with. However before that they were small groups of celibate druids who would trade food with the hunter gatherers in exchange for their spiritual services, they were the first to live in permanent homes.

The Strain of Frost

Winter came one night,
as silent as death.
It spread its wings of snow over the temperate lands
and breathed mild wind into the warmer regions.
Where the frost is
sources of food diminish,
leaving beast and men hungry.
The spirit of the southern wind must be wicked,
the way she relentlessly spread her cold.

Discovered hunting!

Disaster! While on an excursion the forest your warrior band was ambushed by warriors of unknown affliction.
20 warriors were immediately killed or died of injuries. Bhakvi was injured in the arm and it had to be amputated due to gangrene.
At least 10 of the attackers were killed as your warriors made their escape.

The survivers have the following to say about their attackers:

They spoke a tongue vaguely understandable.

They seemed to refer to themselves as the Ra'.

Their bows shot harder and more percise than any bow the amorcians have ever seen before.

The attackers were at least 40.

Their appearance was similar to amorcians, though they wore more furs and pelts.

Some amorcians think Sukla is to blame due to him taking the warriors on an excursion through unfamiliar lands.

Events

The exploration party sent to the south are unheard of. The strong winds has led people to believe they were lost as sea. (-5 population)

The diplomats were recieved by a band of warriors and an elderly man. They were escorted to a hut in a camp for warriors where they were given food and beds.
The gifts were recieved without much fuss, the elderly man simply lowered his head and put his hand on his forhead. The diplomats interpreted this as gratitude.
Through body language and much effort to make himself understood the elderly man firmly delivered the message that the Vabat did not wish to wage war with the
solutreans, but they could not accept any son of the Virga Moth into their society. That is why the diplomats were held in this remote camp.
After the elderly man had made sure the solutrean diplomats had understood him, a process which took a few days, they were escorted back to their canoes and forced to leave the island.

Consequenses and information gathered:

The weapons and tools of the Vabat are at the same level as those of Solutrea.

The Vabat has got numerous warriors. At least 30 were observed.

The reason for their xenophobia is mysterious.

Amorusk - Season of the Deep Freeze (Turn 4)

Bakvi sat crouched low in the snow, taking in his surroundings. Other warriors of the tribe, twenty in all, were fanned out both to his right and left, wearing heavy furs to protect them from the chill. The wind had stopped blowing for the moment, but snow still managed to lazily drift from the sky, covering up past tracks and allowing each of the men to blend in better with the wilderness.

Bakvi’s fingers were numb. The cold had managed to pierce even the thick covering of his fur gloves, but he couldn’t hide them away inside his large overcoat. That would require moving, something he couldn’t risk to do right now. Right now, he needed to blend in with his surroundings. Besides, if he were to move, he wouldn’t be able to use the bow and arrow that were just within his grasp and the whole point of this excursion would be a waste. Keeping that in mind, Bakvi pushed the thought of cold from his head and focused on the task at hand.

Ahead of him and his men, through the trees, was a large group of deer, which was strange because there were normally more conservative during the winter. However, this group appeared to have wandered out to dig up some food in the falling snow. For now, Bakvi and his men were quietly observing them, not making any unnecessary motions and making absolutely no noise whatsoever. When Anesh had said to learn the ways of the forest, Bakvi had taken it seriously. That’s why he was out here, in the harshest conditions the forest could muster, with a group of other men. And it looked like they might come out of this excursion with some food.

Slowly, Bakvi notched an arrow, taking great care to move only in very small increments. The other men, realizing that the deer were now within range and that Bakvi was making the first move, followed suit and notched arrows into their own bows. Bakvi observed the group of deer. There were eight of them, a rather large group. Right in the center of it all stood a large buck, it’s antlers the largest of the group. There was one other male in the group, but the rest were female. One of the deer was smaller than the rest, and obviously not fully matured. That would make for tender meat, but less of it all around. Bakvi and his men knew to avoid that one at all costs.

As the leader of the group, Bakvi knew what he had to do. In order to set an example, he would be the one taking the shot at the male buck. It would be his prize to take him, and serve as a trophy to present Anesh with. That would surely show that he had become master of the forest.

Slowly, Bakvi pulled the bow further back, stretching the twine centimeter by centimeter so as not to make a sound. The world around him collapsed as his focus became centered on the buck. The world slowed down until it seemed as if everything was standing in place, frozen. The snow itself seemed to hang in the air, waiting for the inevitable moment. Bakvi’s nostrils flared as he drew in a deep gulp of cold air, filling his lungs.

In an instant the bow was raised and the arrow was unleashed. It strummed through the air, leaving behind only a whoosh as it zipped across the frozen landscape to make contact with the buck. The arrow sunk in just below the neck and above the leg, causing all of the deer to leap into the air. But for some, it was too late. The buck itself tried to leap away, but the arrow had struck deep, and instead of taking to the air, it stumbled and almost fell forward. Two other arrows sunk into it as the other men of Bakvi’s group let loose with their own. The other male deer of the group got hit twice with arrows. One of them lodged into its back with the other protruding from the flanks. This didn’t stop him from leaping off into the forest, away from the attackers. Another two arrows had found their mark in a doe. She had tried to jump away as well, but had been less successful. She was now writhing on the ground, still trying to escape. The buck itself was dead. One of the shots must have hit an artery. The other arrows had missed their mark and had disappeared somewhere in the snow. The remaining deer had escaped before the hunters could let loose with more arrows.

Bakvi stood up from his cover, shaking off the snow that had accumulated on his jacket and heading in to where the two deer lie. The other warriors did likewise, shrugging off the snow and making their way into the clearing. One of the warriors made their way over to the doe, pulling out a small stone knife and slitting the doe’s throat to end her misery. Two of the warriors broke away from the group and headed off into the forest, tracking down the other buck that had escaped. Bakvi smiled inside. He was glad that he hadn’t had to tell the men to track the other buck down. They were learning.

At least there is snow on the ground, Bakvi thought to himself. That was one plus of having a white floor in the forest. It was so much easier to trace the red blood against that background. He was confident they would find the deer. They were both good hunters.

That was one of the positive things about Sukla’s training. The man may have been a fool and overly zealous sometimes, but he did know how to train men. Now, each and every man had become a marksman, able to hit targets well outside the range of any normal man.

“Good shooting,” Bakvi said to the men. “Well done. The village will be pleased with this.” Bakvi knelt down next to the buck, as did the remaining members of the group. Within seconds they had begun to carve away the hide to collect the meat and bones. Yes, this had been a good turnover. Anesh would be pleased.

Unfortunately, the sun was setting, a fact that was all too obvious to the group of assembled warriors. They were much too far away from the village to make it back in time, and if Bakvi were to be true to his word, it wouldn’t make sense to shirk an opportunity to camp in the forest. They had done it before, on numerous occasions.

“Looks like we’ll have to make camp here,” Bakvi stood up from the carcass of the buck. “Someone come with me to collect some wood. We’ll make a fire here to keep us warm and let those other two know where our camp is.” And to keep away the predators, Bakvi didn’t add, even though every man knew it was true. A fresh kill like this was open game for anyone, and in the deep of winter, it was more than likely for some scavengers to come nearer to the camp. I’ll have to post a guard tonight, Bakvi thought as he made his way into the forest with another warrior.

Bakvi had been confined to his sleeping mat for some time after the ambush and amputation. It had been a rough couple of weeks, especially because of the winter that had descended upon Amorusk. Things were not going too well.

Kelem brought in a large bowl of heated water that had several different kinds of leaves in them to add flavor. This was a new concoction that had only recently been thought up thanks to firemaking. It had become a hit with the Amorcian people, especially now that the weather was cold.

Bakvi still lay on his mat, staring at the ceiling. He had been awake for some time, but hadn’t felt the urge to move. He had lost some of his fire ever since his arm had been amputated, which was understandable. Plus he had been confined to the house. There wasn’t much anyone could do in this weather. When it was a nicer day, some of the hunters would go out and attempt to gather some food. Some brave souls attempted to fish as well, which added a bit to the stores of food the Amorcians relied on.

“I brought you some water,” Kelem said, setting the bowl down beside her husband. He grunted in acknowledgement, but said nothing else. “Is there anything else I can get you?” she asked, “Are you hungry?”

“No, I’m fine,” Bakvi drew in a long breath of air. There wasn’t much Kelem could do.

Anesh Shamir sat surrounded by the survivors of the ambush. He had listened intently to each and every account that each hunter had to give, trying to get as clear a picture as possible. Each man had many things to say, given the near-death experience, but each of them told a similar story. Apparently, around forty men of unknown origin had attacked them while they were out hunting in the forest. They were obviously much better at hunting, as their bows allowed them to strike from a much greater distance. It also seemed that they relied on hunting more, as their clothes were made up almost entirely of furs from animals.

All of this was very interesting to Anesh and he listened carefully. When each man had had his say, they all sat in silence for some time, waiting for him to speak. When Anesh did, it was not pleasant.

“These men you speak of know the ways of the forest much better than us. But that does not excuse the fact that you failed to protect your people.” Anesh stared at Sukla as he said this. “Any true warrior would have put up a better fight than what you have to say.” Anesh turned to gaze at each man in turn, making sure that his words were being understood. “There will be many changes. Another incident such as this will not be tolerated. Training will be stepped up beyond the current pace that we have set. We are a strong people, and our warriors should show as much. At the same time, we need to replenish our numbers. We lost many men in that ambush, and we must regroup. Each of you will choose four other men to join the ranks of the warriors. These men must be capable with bow and arrow, along with spears. They must be strong and quick. And they must be smart. There are many men to choose from among us, so be sure you are picking the right people.

“You will have to teach them the ways of the hunter and the warrior. We now know for sure that there are hostile people out there who do not wish to have peace. All of these men must be prepared to kill the enemy without remorse. The taking of a human life should not be feared and should not be regretted. These are hard times that we live in, and they call for hard measures.

“That is why I am going to institute a Warrior Code that each warrior will be responsible for memorizing and upholding. They have a duty to the people, just as the people have a duty to them. For now, focus on recruiting and training. There are to be no more excursions into the forests, but there should be a guard posted to make sure that these bandits to attempt to attack us in our homes. When we are strong enough, we will crush these men for what they have done to us.”

Nidok was ecstatic. Not only had his father approved of his idea, but he had set aside a number of workers to help with the construction of his project.

“This idea not only pleases me, but it will please the townspeople as well,” his father had told him, much to his delight. And so, that’s how Nidok had gotten here, at the forefront of a small group of men who would act as the managers of the construction crew. They had gathered in one of the community houses to better accommodate their numbers. It was cold outside and snow had already piled up around the village.

“This building will have four large rooms, at least four man lengths on each side,” Nidok was saying, directing the men as to how he wanted this new building to be built. Anesh was sitting off to the side, observing his son. “They will be in the shape of a square. And right down the middle there should be a hallway so that people can walk in the building without having to be inside one of these rooms.” Nidok stopped for a moment taking in a deep breath before continuing on again, “There is a big difference with this building and the other houses of our village. This building will have to be much deeper into the ground if it is to work. Since most of the rocks come from the ground, this must be why the spirits were trapped for so long. And if we are to keep them trapped within our buildings, we should use the ground to our advantage. So this building will have to have almost all of the wall made of dirt. That means a lot of digging.” There was some grumbling from the men. They knew that the ground was frozen during the winter and much harder to dig in. They also knew though that in the spring with the thawing, the ground would turn into mud and be even harder to work with. For now, they needed to use the winter’s powers to their advantages if they wanted to get this job done in the easiest way possible. “And the roof will have to be thick. Very thick. Otherwise the spirits might escape out there and this whole job will be for nothing.” Nidok paused again, looking at the men. For many twelve year olds, this may have seemed a daunting task, directing men that were much older and stronger than them. But for Nidok, it was just natural. He was an aggressive person, which not only helped his curiosity, but also helped him to deal with other matters, such as this.  “That’s all for now,” he said, dismissing the men and looking over to his father with a smile on his face.

If this project worked, not only would it make the people of the village happy, but it would make Nidok happy. Anesh smiled back at his son, proud of what he saw.

Sukla lay with his wife, resting his hand on the very small rise of her belly. It was only recently that Resha had found out she was pregnant, after months of trying for a baby. But now, Sukla couldn’t be happier. He was finally going to have a child, even though that was a couple of months away. Things couldn’t be much better.

Bakvi, the arrogant power hungry gold digger, had gotten what he had deserved. And now Sukla’s power had grown with the addition of thirty-six more men! Then maybe he would be allowed to avenge his dishonor because of the ambush.

Sukla smiled at his beautiful wife. Yes, he though to himself, things are not bad at all.

Warrior Code
[1] The will of my master, is the will of me. I shall never go against him.

[2] Warriors cannot survive without workers. Workers cannot survive without warriors. Perfection of society comes with a balance of both. The worker must respect warrior, as the warrior allows the worker to live his life in peace.

[3] In order to uphold the peace of society, I must wield my power with care and think carefully.

[4] The disputes of the workers can create disorder. As a warrior, it is my job to settle these disputes quickly and fairly to preserve the peace.

This code was enacted by Anesh Shamir to outline the duties and responsibilities of the Amorcian warriors. Later on, historians would attribute this as the official founding of the Amorcian Warrior Class that would only continue to grow with time. At the same time, this code were really the first system of laws established within Amorcian society. Not only was it the first sign of a caste system, but it gave a hint to what Amorcian society would later turn out to be.

The first law was basically a transfer of devotion from parents to master. Normally, devotion to the leader followed a hierarchical system that would cause people to listen to the orders of the leader anyway, this new warrior code ensured that the warriors would be fully and completely complacent with the leader's orders.

The second law established the harmony that was supposed to exist between the warriors and everyone else. It pointed out the balance between the two classes, but more specifically established a system that supported the warriors. Because the warriors were required to constantly focus on protection and warfare, they were unable to fish or hunt to effectively support their families. In this way, the workers would put up extra food for these warriors in return for the protection the warriors gave them.

The third law was more vague and just a general guideline for the requirement to be a warrior. It would gain more precedence later on in Amorcian society, but when it was first established it had little significance.

The fourth and final law was the real establishment of a law system. The warriors were given the ability to settle disputes that arose between the Amorcian people. Their decision was final, unless trumped by the chieftain himself.

This mess of a computing project is sucking up all my time trying to sort it out, I'll be back on form by next Wednesday if everything goes according to plan. Sorry i couldn't get a long writeup out this week, but at least it's something.

****

Cahtu had spent the better part of a month auditioning the strongest men in the tribe for his new guard, most well off families owned weapons but they weren't necessarily at the disposal of the rulers to use as soldiers unless there was a real crisis, something which hadn't happened for decades. Instead what Mehtu needed was men ready to defend the peace of his expanding tribe, to police his people and to train professionally to defend them from the occasional wild animal attack.

The selection process had been tough but had finally singled out ten men ready for the job, Cahtu now stood to address his new soldiers, each covered in red paint to signify their rank and armed with fine stone battle axes and small wooden shields painted with intricate designs.

"Men, you are the most revered among the common tribesmen, strong and respected the people will listen to you and it is your duty to protect the people from crime and danger. You have my blessing and my trust and i hope you honour it,"

He saluted the captain of the group and dismissed them so they could resume their duties.

Reigia, Year One, Season 4

In other parts of the world people were fearing the cold, but the Reigians continued on life as normal. Or rather as normal as they could considering their hunger. People were beginning to doubt Wrin's capability as a leader, and this scared her. She had control over the people because they trusted her, but soon she would lose this trust, and what then? She ran, ran to the river side before the sun rose, and ran down the river until it met a larger one. And then she screamed. She screamed guttural insults at the gods, at the leatherhides, at the fish. She screamed until birds began to fly away. Or at least she thought she was what caused their flight. But her screaming had attracted a visitor. A stalker. The large cat was lying against the brush just behind Wrin, and when it moved Wrin wouldn't notice because of her noise. The leopard ran out of the brush and Wrin turned around, with timing equal parts great and poor. Here she was, facing what she could only see as retribution from the gods. She approached it, unfearing and unknowing, and reached a hand out to touch the beast, which backed away slightly at the lack of fear in it's prey. "What are you? Do you fear me Shukkin? Why did the Shuk send you?"
The leopard circled Wrin as she spoke, but she faced the predator at all times.
"ANSWER ME! WHY ARE YOU HERE?" But Wrin would not receive an answer. Then a rock struck the leopard in the head, coming from the otherside of the great river with force unlike that of a human. And as the leopard ran away Wrin knelt down and grabbed the rock, holding the smooth surface firmly. There was something watching her, protecting her. It was not her time to pass, and the gods were telling her through this stone.

Opek smiled when he saw his daughter walking, her belly protruding oddly. He would have a grandson and he was proud. His daughter's choice in a mate was less than perfect, but such difficulties could be fixed in the future. Witt, the chieftess heir, was less than happy about her situation. This was her first pregnancy, and as such she was very confused at the behaviour of her body. She had seen her mother like this twice now, once with her younger brother and again now. But she took little comfort. Now her mother would have to talk to her, and she really didn't want to talk.

Rebirth and Recovery

Few had felt as hopeless as they did that winter.
When the cold is eternal
and your relatives dies
your hope is sure to die.
But with spring that hope was reborn.
The winds were mild,
the fields and the forests prospered,
life goes on at its steady pace.

Amorusk - Season of New Life (Turn 5)

Nidok sat steaming in the sauna alongside Bakvi and Kelem, who was rumored to be with child. Small beads of sweat were dripping from their pores as the room filled with the spirits of the rocks. There were many other men and women in the room as well, as there was no discrimination against who could use the sauna. The only restriction was space, and even though the sauna had four separate rooms dedicated to the rock spirits, they were almost always full. The winters had been harsh, and the saunas had been one of the few places that the people found safety and comfort in.

This was especially true for Bakvi. The winter had been hard, all the more so because of the loss of his arm. But spring had brought good news. The winter was fading, his arm was almost completely healed, and Kelem was with child. Bakvi was going to be a father! It had given him a new outlook on life. Immediately after the loss of his arm, he had felt dejected and hadn’t seen a point to going on with his life. With the promise of a child, Bakvi had gained renewed energy. Not only had he rejoined the ranks of the hunters and warriors, but he had become the best spearmen of the group. He was no longer able to use the bow and arrow, and so because of that, he had devoted most of his time and training to perfecting the use of the spears his tribe made. And this had led him to become the spearman instructor of the warriors, earning him prestige and rank among the men of the tribe.

In large part, Bakvi attributed this to becoming closer with the rock spirits. Not only did he feel like he was closer with the spirits while at the sauna, but he also felt better altogether whenever he visited the sauna.

“This is all thanks to you, Nidok,” Bakvi said, smiling at the boy and patting him on the head. Nidok smiled back at Bakvi.

“All thanks to my curiosity!” Nidok said, leaning back against the earthen wall and closed his eyes. It was nice to be complimented on things, especially when they came from Bakvi. Nidok looked up to Bakvi like an older brother. And even though he did have an older brother—Sukla—he was more of the older brother that everyone hated. Bakvi was much nicer and actually took time to listen to Nidok and his wild stories.

“I thank you as well, Nidok,” Kelem said, speaking up. She patted her belly absentmindedly, “he was very downtrodden until you managed to complete this dwelling.”

“Glad I could help,” Nidok said, his smile growing even more. This place had definitely earned him a reputation. If only there was a way to expand it…

Anesh stood atop a rather large hill, looking down on a large group of men going through bow and arrow drills. His son, Sukla, stood in front of the men, leading them through the drills. Warchief had turned out to be the perfect job for his eldest son, even though not many people agreed. Sukla had a negative reputation, and many blamed him for the ambush.

This concerned Anesh for several reasons. The first was that he wanted his people to be happy. The second was that he wanted his son to carry out and take over the tribe once Anesh passed on, as any father would want. The third and final reason was that Anesh was genuinely concerned for the protection of his people. The ambush had shown that he was correct to worry about the safety of Amorusk. There were still nomads out there, and they could be dangerous, as the ambush had shown. That was the reason why he had ordered more men to be recruited into the warrior class. There were dangers out there and he needed to have a force ready to deal with it.

And that’s what this warrior class was for. Anesh needed the morale of his people to be raised, especially after the harsh winter they had just weathered. It had been the worst they had experienced in years, and many people had died. Because of this, there was a deep depression among the Amorcian people, which was infectious. The Season of New Life had brought them new hope, though, and this was something that Anesh knew he needed to capitalize on.

That’s why he was planning a Spring Celebration. It would acknowledge the loss of life in the harsh winter, but it would also show the people that there was still plenty to live for. The spring, although cold, held hope as the temperature warmed and new plants began to grow.

Sukla stood in front of his men, leading them through the drills. This was the fifth time they had practiced this day. Needless to say, the men were tired of the drill, but they had it down to a science. Which was a good thing, because the men needed to be at the point where they didn’t even have to think about it, they just needed to react.

Sukla was definitely full of himself, but his other traits made him the best candidate for the warchief. Plus there was the fact that he was the chieftain’s son. He definitely wasn’t popular among the people, but that didn’t matter. Because while even the other warriors were hesitant to be around his person, they did have a small amount of respect for him. He was their leader, and he was actually able to lead them, for the most part. The very fact that he actually participated in the drills and exercises was something, because every man knew that Sukla could just as easily sit back and watch them from a distance while critiquing them.

But he was still an *******.

Nidok sat with his mother and sister-in-law, Resha, in the Shamir household. Resha’s belly was much more pronounced than it had been before. Even now it was showing through her clothes.

“How is the child?” Kala asked, smiling at Resha. She remembered having her own children, the feeling of being bloated, the feeling of the child moving within…

“I could have done without the morning sickness, but that is mostly gone now. Instead, the little one is starting to move,” Resha self-consciously rubbed her stomach. Kala smiled.

“I remember those days well. Cherish them now, before they grow up and turn into children!” Kala laughed!

“Hey!” Nidok responded immediately, well aware of what his mother was referring to.

“I joke,” Kala grabbed her son and wrapped him into a hug. “You’ve been busy as of late,” Kala said, referring to the Town Sauna and its construction. Alongside this, Nidok had gained some respect among the villagers for being the finder of the stone spirits. Many had begun going to Nidok and asking him to help them with their problems. To them, he was the obvious one to ask, since he had such a strong connection with the stone spirits. And even if he couldn’t necessarily communicate with them, he must have had something going for him if the stone spirits had chosen him as the one they revealed themselves to.

“Have you been giving the villagers good advice?” Kala asked her son. He looked at her and then looked away, sighing a bit as he did so.

“I don’t know. I try to, but some of their questions are very difficult. I don’t think that there actually are answers to some of their problems.” Nidok took in a deep breath again before continuing on, “I want to help them, but sometimes I can’t.”

“I know it is hard,” Kala said, tussling her son’s hair. For the longest time, the chieftain’s wife was always seen as the one to seek advice from. Because she was a female and generally older, she was often seen as a great source of wisdom to draw from. Lately, that job had fallen on Nidok, which was somewhat strange given his young age. “You just must do the best that you can. You have been blessed by the spirits. You can’t just throw that away.”

“That is very true,” Resha nodded in agreement.

All Nidok could do was sigh.

Religion
For the longest time, there was no such thing as an organized Amorcian religion. There was no consent on the actual religious system, but it wasn’t necessary. There was a general agreement that spirits were present throughout the world, but what spirits actually existed was a completely different matter.

The major elements found in the world were worshipped in their own right as separate spirits. Water, earth, fire (even before the Amorcian people could actually make it), air, and a variety of different living things each had their own spirits. Each family had the spirits of ancestors to help them and guide them.

It wasn’t until Nidok, son of Anesh, actually discovered the stone spirits that the idea of some form of organized, uniform religion even began to enter the villagers heads. This was the first sign of an actual unified religion.

There was a lot of fuss around the sickly infant, barely a season old and she laid in her cot, wailing and crying, whilst priests and servants rushed about to fan her, cool her with water and feed her the various ointments and remedies that she had been prescribed at the request of her grandmother. Eshia had remained by her side for weeks, which was more commitment than anyone had seen her give before. Alam on the other hand had barely found the time to visit his daughter in between drinking, fighting and seeing other women.

Cahtu was growing impatient with his son in law's behaviour so had summoned both Alam and his father to meet with him. Alam's Father, Hatham, had always been a trusted adviser to Cahtu even before he had become chieftain of the tribe or fathered the daughter that would one day marry his son. That son was now in such as state he had to be dragged up the hillside to the chieftan's cave by the guards;

"As I'm sure you know Hatham, your son has an obligation to the tribe, to serve his chieftan and care for his wife and son, an obligation he is breaking. My daughter needs a husband and my grandson needs a father, and i will not hesitate to find them another if your son cannot show himself capable of the task,"

Alam was laying at the feet of the two men, murmuring something indecipherable and had started to cry,

"Do not worry Chieftan, I'll sort him out, until then I'll be around to help with anything i can, i know my son's wife is struggling at the moment,"

"I appreciate your concern Hatham, if only i could say the same for your son,"

"Thankyou Cathu,"

Hatham dragged his son to his feet and walked him back home,

"You may have been able to do what you liked before but neither you or Eshia can act like you used to anymore, you have a child to care for and you're going to do it properly, i will not have my own son banished from the tribe,"

Social Traditions:

Marriage, births and family all play a large part in the society of the Kestali, a marriage is usually permenant however if the marriage breaks down the person deemed responsible is banished, this means that that person is no longer considered a member of the tribe and is thus ineligible for marriage. If children are involved a new parent must be found because it is law that a child cannot be left without two parents from the tribe, this new parent must marry the other current parent and also have no children of their own. A child born out of marriage will immediately intiate a marriage between the two parents, and a marriage without children is considered pointless and thus two people should not marry until they are ready to have children. The vows of a marriage involve an obligation to look after the spouse and to care for the children. Sexual morality on the other hand is largely removed from the tradition and is considered the individuals private business, for instance if the two members of a marriage no longer wish to remain intimate it is socially acceptable for them to see other people which is helped by various effective contraceptive herbal remedies which have been discovered. The pressure to be married however drives the expansion of the tribe and an insistence on a nuclear family unit means that a guaranteed and effective social support structure is available to any member of the tribe via their extended family.

Makram covered his mouth and nose as he stepped past the pile of left over deer bones; it was being picked on by the swarming crows that had flocked to the untidy cave complex. He looked into the cave, next to which the pile had gathered, and saw three women grinding wheat for bread,

“Why is it that this filth fills your streets?”

“Because there is no-one here to do the work, they’re all at the forest carrying out the chieftain’s orders your highness,”

Makram had known the project had been a certain obsession of his fathers, but he had never thought it would make a usually rational man this short sighted. He walked up to his father’s cave to talk to him about it. Walking through the door he was greeted by a billow of smoke and could see his father alone in a meditative state,

“Father?”

“Yes son?” he responded to Makram’s surprise

“Have you noticed that the caves are becoming too filthy to live in?”

“Yes son, I’m bringing workers from the forest as we speak, we’re nearing a breakthrough, and I think we can spare the labour, now what was it you wanted?”

“Oh, nothing father, I’ll leave you to your meditation”

Makram thought as he left of how he could ever live up to his father as chieftain, as his father’s son the job would fall to him in future, and he certainly didn’t feel ready now.

***

It was the first summer after a royal birth, this meant celebrations. The mid summer festival was always celebrated to anoint newborns, but most years it was understated, this year would be different because of Aeta. She had recovered from the worst of her illness and had been dressed in flowers for the event, gifts would be brought from across the tribe and a ceremony performed by the head priest would be held with the whole tribe in attendance.

As usual the planning had fallen to Mehtu and she was busy reviewing the multitude of painted wooden ornaments, carved stone pendants and pouches of rare plant oils offered to the child. Eshia on the other hand had reconciled with her husband and they had both been given leave to spend time alone, time they had been taking full advantage of. They would at least be back for the ceremony.

Food Production: 150
Research (Logging): 50
Maintenance: 30
Healthcare: 15

Valuable Item Production: 10

***

Wealth and Status:

While the status of a person in the tribe isn’t directly attributed to their wealth, wealth usually falls to those with high status in the tribe. Deference to these people is considered to bring spiritual wealth from the gods, and gifts are paid in gratitude for the work of the high up in organising the tribe. The cynical might say this is simply a method of control, and they’d probably be right.

Amorusk - Season of the Sun (Turn 6)

Resha sat composed in her house, staring off into space. Before her, her husband sat eating his food in quiet. The news of the stillborn child had been heartbreaking, and everyone had taken it hard, but Sukla especially. At first he had been mad at her. The only reason that something happened in the first place had to have been Resha's fault. She had taken this in step, as it was commonly believed to be the woman's fault when something bad happened to a child, especially one that was still in the womb.

Sukla had eventually calmed down as time went on, which was good news for everyone. He had taken some time off to spend alone where he had thought deeply about things. This had been a common practice of the Amorusk people when there were hard times, and it always seemed to be a good remedy. This had calmed him somewhat, although it had altered his mood around the home. Whereas he had been joyous before, now he was hard pressed to even smile. And so this is how things went in the household of the firstborn son of the chieftain.

Bakvi stood in front of the assembled warriors. Everyone was present except Sukla, who had taken time off from training to attend to his household. This had left the training up to Bakvi, who had been ordered by Anesh to take control of the warriors. Even though Bakvi was short one arm, he still had the respect of the men because he had survived the ambush and he could still wield a spear better than any man in the tribe.

"Today, we will learn the ways of survival. Sukla has trained each and every one of you to be accurate with the weapons that we have. Now I will teach you how to put those skills to good use. We will venture into the forest, but not too far. There are many dangers out there, and we are not ready for the real thing. But hopefully, after this training, we will be better prepared. We will stick together as a group, but move through the forest alone. We will not make noise. We will be like the spirits. We will live off the land and hunt to get our food. And we will become better warriors because of it." The group of warriors nodded their approval. Many had been aching to get into some sort of action rather than patrolling the town and training. And even those this was training, it was better to be out in the wilderness.

Bakvi had set up the training so that half of the warriors would stay back in town, under Sukla's command, to keep peace and order while Bakvi led the other half into the forest. They would be gone a week before returning in which case the groups would switch and Bakvi would lead the other half of the warriors into the forest.

"I just hope this works," Bakvi muttered to himself.

Nidok sat on top of a hill that overlooked a good portion of Amorusk. The town sat nestled beside some hills along the coast. For the most part, the area was quiet, but some days the ocean and the wind could stir up noise. For now it was peaceful, which somewhat disconcerted Nidok.

He had come up to this vantage point to think about many things. Ever since his discovery of the spirits and the construction of the sauna, people had been coming to him looking for answers to many of their questions, and there were many questions. They ranged all over the place, as people sought wisdom from the One the Spirits Favored, as he had come to be called. But a lot of the questions had been troubling, especially because Nidok had only recently turned 13 and still had much to see in life.

The one positive thing about this, was that it had gotten Nidok thinking. He was constantly trying to find answers for the townspeople's questions, and had been searching his mind for anything that resembled a solution. While he was doing this, he had realized a number of things. The first was that many bad things had been happening as of late. The winter had been harsh on the Amorcian people, and had killed many. Bakvi had lost an arm because of bandits in the forests. His brother, Sukla, had been trying very long to have a child, and even when his wife had become pregnant, it had been stillborn. As Nidok thought about it, he wouldn't have been surprised if his sister's child turned out dead as well, although he didn't wish for it.

So Nidok had come to a conclusion. All of these things, coupled with the many problems of the townspeople had led him to believe that there wasn't much joy left in the world. Perhaps people had been happier in earlier times, but he was doubtful of that. You lived and then you died, this much Nidok knew. But he couldn't help but think that there had to be some reason for all of these bad things (and the few good things) that happened. There had to be some reason behind all of these actions going on in the world.

That's why he had decided that he was the one to figure out the questions. He had determined that he would come up to this vantage point every day, and contemplate the reasons for these happenings until he found an answer.

Amorcian Appearance

Amorcian dress is not very pleasing, at least it wouldn't look that way to outsiders. For the longest time, before the Amorcian's knew how to hunt, they would wear clothes made from various plant materials that had been turned into fiber. Needless to day, this hadn't been very effective, but the Amorcian's had to make do with it. With the invention of hunting, furs have become more common as they provide greater warmth than those of the plants.

Women were normally more heavily clothed than men, and take greater care of their appearance. They generally have longer hair, and often braid this in ways so that they look fancier. Jewelry is also a big deal, and many women wear necklaces.

Men, on the other hand, are less aesthetically inclined. They have hair length anywhere from the length of that of a woman's, or completely bald. Among the warrior class, it has become more common to keep hair shorter than two inches if not completely shaved, although this is not as common. Only men pierce themselves. Normally the bones of animals dangle from their ears or their nose, as these are the more common places to pierce oneself.

Gentle Winds

The warm summer left in its wake a mild autumn.
From the south the feared wind spirits of cold death came,
but not with the passion they had wielded the previous year.
This caused delight for many, who hoped for a mild winter.
The month was a calm one over all,
what one may wonder however;
is this the calm before the storm?

Your people is starving! They are growing uncontent and the order or the land has gone down. Many refuse to work, and some become sick from malnutrition.

Wrin gave birth to a healthy son.

Disaster! Witt died giving birth to a healthy son. The royal family mourned the loss but handled the death well.

Your research has been going slower due to the fact that your population is starving.

-Witt's son, Kalesh, is to be treated with great respect by all Reigians. This is because his mother died during child-birth, meaning the gods deemed him more important than his mother and should be treated as a god.
-Witt's first mate, however, is to be killed. His purpose was to breed with the heiress and his seed killed her. His execution is to be by drowning and should be done at night.
-Wrin's son, Upar, is to be raised by Krith.
-Kalesh is to be raised by Hett.
-Wrin is to try for another child with both of her mates.

Amorusk – Season of the Leaves (Turn 7)

A large bonfire had been lit at the center of the Amorcian capital in celebration of the birth. All members of the tribe, both within the village and from the surrounding villages had been given the day off and invited to the large celebration that had been in the works for some time. Originally, the celebration was meant to recognize the birth of Resha’s child, but a horrible event had postponed the celebration. It was only to be brought back to life following the birth of Kelem’s healthy baby boy. He had been named Aukom by both his mother and father. Aukom Shamir, the first grandson of Anesh Shamir.

Anesh couldn’t have been more proud. The death of Sukla and Resha’s child had been a horrible scar, not only on him, but his immediate family and tribe members. It had affected them all greatly. And that was probably why so much had been put into this current celebration. The good news had swept through the tribe and Anesh wanted to capture that energy. Things had seemed negative as of late, and this was the perfect opportunity to turn things around.

“You know I could not be prouder of you,” Anesh said, loosely wrapping his arms around his daughter and his grandson, who was resting in her arms. A large smile stretched across his face as he gazed into the closed eyes of the newborn. Bakvi approached them, coming from the large bonfire with a smirk on his face.

“Bakvi!” Anesh said, turning his attention to him. When he got close enough, Anesh grabbed the man and pulled him close so that their heads touched. “You have brought me much honor with this child, and a son no less! Do well to take care of him. He may—no WILL—be very important to this tribe.

“I will do as you ask,” Bakvi said in his ever obedient tone.

“Good man.”

Kala sat next to Nidok, looking at the large celebration that was taking place. She too had been overcome with joy at the good news. Her daughter had entered the next stage of her life into motherhood and this celebration acknowledged that.

Kala glanced over to her son, who seemed detached from everything. Nidok stared into the bonfire as if absorbed in deep thought. He had been like this for some time, which was strange for him. Normally he was much noisier, constantly asking questions about nearly everything. Normally, it took a great deal of energy to calm him down, because when he came across a question, he latched onto it and wouldn’t stop until he had been satisfied. But now, he had been quiet.

Maybe he’s matured? Kala thought to herself, although she seriously doubted it. Something had been ailing her son, and yet she hadn’t found out what.

“Nidok,” she said, trying to shake him out of his blank stare. He closed his eyes for a moment before turning to look at his mother. “What’s wrong? You have hardly been yourself lately.” she trailed off, trying to read her son’s expression.

“Nothing…”

“Do not lie. I can tell when you are lying. I am your mother after all,” she let out a sigh. “You disappear for hours and return without saying a word. You’ve barely eat the food that’s placed before you, and you haven’t asked me any questions as of late.” Nidok sighed himself and turned to look the other way.

“I guess you’re right.” He said this as if he had been caught and was disappointed that he had gotten himself in this situation. He looked around the bonfire before them several times and took in a deep breath as he prepared to launch into a deep explanation.

“I’ve been hiking up to the top of the hills and looking out onto the village early every morning to watch the sunrise. I will stay up there for some time afterwards, contemplating the questions that have been bothering me. People have been coming to me with their problems, and there are many that I have not been able to answer. This bothers me. I used to think that everyone else had the answers and that I needed to learn them, but now it seems that people know as little as me. In some cases, they seem to know less…” Kala could tell that this deeply troubled her son, but before she could say anything he continued.

“Lately, I have been thinking about the tribe and our family. For the most part it seems that only bad things have been visited upon us. The harsh winter that took many lives, the loss of Bakvi’s arm, and the death of Sukla and Resha’s unborn. This greatly depressed me.” These were strange things to hear from someone so young, and they took Kala by surprise. True enough, she had often thought the same things, but only for a moment. Normally, she would push these thoughts away, thinking of them as negative.

“Nidok, there are good and bad things in the world. Sometimes, it may seem that the bad things are much greater than they actually are. Look around you! There is a large celebration thanks to new life within our tribe!” Kala said, trying to cheer her son up.

“I have thought of this, but I can’t get past the feeling that it is all for naught. True, the birth of Aukom is a great thing, but what will his life be like? He may die tomorrow for all we know.” Nidok said this in a low tone.

“Do not say such things!” Kala said, suddenly angry that her son would even think this, especially during the birthday celebration. “It is bad to think this!” Nidok simply stared at his mother.

“Life is suffering,” is all that he said before standing up and walking away from the celebration.

Layout of Amorusk
A majority of the people within Amorusk live along the coast. For the longest time, Amorcian’s relied on the ocean as their source of food. Fishing and scavenging the beaches for oysters were their main source of sustenance. Because of this, most of the villages within Amorusk are along the coast, near sources of fresh water. The largest village, Amor, serves as the capital of the Amorcian people, simply because this is where the chieftain and his family reside. At the same time, this village has the most people and is the most heavily populated area for many thousands of miles (at least to the knowledge of the Amorcian people).

With the invention and adoption of hunting, and the use of animals as both a source of food and clothing, more villages were established deeper inland and away from the ocean. These villages still stayed close to sources of fresh water. Eventually, these villages became more developed as fur became more of a necessity to the Amorcian people. This change was gradual and not very noticeable, as a majority of the people stayed along the coast. At the same time, most of the population growth occurred there as well, and didn’t greatly affect the villages established further inland.

Winters Embrace

The human tribes that call the southern lands their home thank the spirits,
as the southern winds embraced rather than assailed them.
Is it perhaps guilty conscience for the cold terror of last year?
The ways of the spirits are mysterious;
at times entrancing, at times heart-wrenching.
The humans can only hope for the spirits good will to not be quelled in the near future.

- Zia's baby is named Kidagakash.

- They research ways of preserving food (new skill). Of the methods they try are smoking it on the fire and salt drying it with sea salt from the ocean. (I will leave it up to Huckbuck if any of these even work. But I am putting points to start research it, even if I can't buy it this turn). As for the requirements for this new skill i thought it maybe could be Herb Lore + Fire Making + Fishing. Its up to you if that can be added as a new skill.

Amorusk – Season of the Snow (Turn 8)

Nidok sat on a stone in his regular resting spot overlooking Amor. A cool breeze came out of the south, a constant reminder of the coming winter. Yet this breeze was not as cold as Nidok remembered. Indeed, most of the villagers had been talking about it as well. Everyone was hoping that this was a good omen of the things to come.

Light was creeping over the horizon in the east, sending rays of light and warmth stretching across the landscape. The first couple of times Nidok had done this, it had been during the day after he had gotten his chores out of the way. But he had gotten more disconnected from these things as time went on. For the past couple of weeks he had been traveling up to the top of the hill before the sunrise. It offered him a nice escape, and allowed him to get out of the household before the others arose to harass him with requests and questions about what he was going to do.

Normally when Nidok sat at the top of the hill, he would rest his eyes and sit in silence, taking everything in. But there was something different about this day. Perhaps it was the mild breeze, or the rising sun. In all probability, it was probably a combination of both that caused him to stretch beyond the regular thinking patterns that had absorbed him since he started meditating on the hill. Whatever it was, something clicked inside of him and launched him down a new path that he had not explored before.

Originally, Nidok has started this with an open mind and much hope. Yet this quest had been born out of depression, so he had not been that surprised when he had sunk into a stupor after thinking about all of the negative things in life. The fact that he had been pondering on these thoughts and moping around Amor with this negative attitude had slowly started to disgust him. Not only was he disgusted with the state of the world, but he had become disgusted with the state of mind that he had adopted. He was constantly negative, and it had taken a toll on him. But on this morning, there was hope, similar to the winds from the south.

“I do not have to be negative,” Nidok said aloud to no one in particular, as there was no one around to hear him. “Things in life may be bad, but there must be a way to correct this,” he mentioned aloud, using the words as a sort of boost to his thought process. “If I can realize there is a problem, then there must be a way to escape it. There must be a way to correct all of the negative things in this world.” This was a new realization in and of itself, yet it led Nidok to another obstacle. What was the answer to this new problem?

“Guess I’m just going to have to think about that,” Nidok mumbled to himself as he settled back down into deep thought.

Kala looked up at the hill that she knew her son must be on. Ever since her discussion with him at the birthday celebration, she had been worried about him. A negative energy had taken him over, and it was slowly infecting the rest of the household. Anesh seemed to be unaffected, though, as he stayed focus on the birth of his new grandson and the fact that he had to worry about the protection of the village. But Kala, as the lead woman in the household, was the one to worry about this sort of thing. In fact, it kept her up at nights as she worried about what her son had been doing, and what kind of thinking had led him to his line of thought.

The thing that worried her the most was that Nidok was still quite young. Sure, he was one year away from being fourteen, and that put him even closer to being a full-fledged man, but the fact almost everyone in the village had been going to him to look for answers was a burden that no one his age should have had to take on, stone spirits or not. But that very idea that Nidok had been the one to discover the stone spirits made her think that maybe this was her son’s calling. Perhaps, he was the only one that could come up with the answers to all of the village people’s questions.

Kala turned her back on the hill and moved towards the kitchen of her house. The calling of her children was another thing she worried about. Sukla seemed destined to take over the leadership of the tribe, yet he was very unpopular among the tribespeople. Resha was a beauty, but she was disconnected from society and did not seem to help their case. Added to the fact that there had been rumors about Sukla’s impotency and the stillborn child only painted them in a darker light. On the other hand, Kelem and Bakvi seemed to be doing just fine. Even though Kelem was the daughter of Anesh, she was not truly guaranteed anything because of it. However, Bakvi was much more liked among the tribespeople, which placed him higher on the totem pole than Sukla. There was the small chance that Bakvi ended up taking over the tribe if Sukla continued to be disliked among the tribespeople.

Kala shuttered at the thought. While that would benefit her daughter (and quite possibly the tribe, although Kala did not want to fully admit it), it would most definitely split the Shamir family, and quite possible the tribe.

Then, of course, there was Nidok, the one that she worried about the most. He had no guarantee of anything besides the fact that he would carry on the Shamir name. It was very unlikely that he would become leader, unless some great misfortune overtook both Sukla and Bakvi following the passing of Anesh. And even if Nidok somehow managed to get into the situation, Kala seriously doubted that he would take up the title of Chieftain. Nidok seemed more disconnected than any of the Shamir’s and did not seem to care about leading anyone or anything.

Kala sighed. “I could always be wrong,” she mumbled to no one in particular.

Sukla sat next to his father, Anesh eating some food that had been prepared for them. They had not said much during this meeting, as there had not been much to say. Sukla glanced over and watched as his father gobbled up some fish. He figured it was as good a time as any to break the silence.

“I’m sorry that I have failed you father,” Sukla said, looking dejectedly into his bowl of food. This sentence caught Anesh off guard as he set down his bowl and looked over at his oldest son.

“Whatever do you mean, son?”

“My failure to bear you a grandchild. My failure at leading the war group several months ago. My failure at winning the hearts of the people. All of these things have been weighing heavily on my mind,” Sukla said.

“What has made you say this?” Anesh paused, “No, what has made you think this?” Anesh said, a slight growl coming out of his throat.

At the sound of his father’s voice, Sukla looked up from his bowl of food and into his father’s eyes. They displayed a scene of anger, something that Sukla had not been expecting.

“You dishonor yourself when you speak like this,” Anesh growled. “Not only that, but you dishonor me. You dishonor the family name!” Anesh threw his bowl away from him, sending the remnants of his meal scattering across the floor. “You have had many failures, as do all men, but to whine like this is uncalled for. You are a man. You must deal with this in a masculine fashion. Men do not complain to each other, or speak of their weaknesses. That is the job of women. Men are to go about their duty without acknowledging their weakness in such an open matter. Account for it, yes, but to openly admit it is faulty.” Anesh paused for a moment, drawing in a deep breath before letting out a low whistle. “You have many things to learn Sukla, many things to learn. I just hope that will be able to learn them in time.” With that Anesh got up and stormed out of the room, quite quickly for someone his age. Sukla stared on, not truly believing what he had just seen.

Although his relationship with his father and been touchy at times, there had always seemed to be some sort of bond. That was only strengthened by the fact that Anesh seemed to favor Sukla over his other children. Recently, things had shifted to the opposite spectrum. Sukla was no longer held in favor over his other children. The birthday celebration for Kelem and Bakvi’s child had illustrated as much, and the fact that Anesh had put so much time and effort into Nidok’s sauna showed that Sukla did not have the favor that he once had.

Sukla looked down at his bowl and saw that there was still plenty of food left in it. He too, pushed it away, although in a much neater way than his father had. Standing up, Sukla made his way to the door and left his father’s household, all the while thinking deeply on what had been said.

“So you have settled on Hanev?” Anesh asked Bakvi. They were standing outside the small building that had been designated as the assembly point for the warriors of Amor. It was nothing special, just another house that allowed them to store weapons, make new ones, and gather together while protected from the elements. Because of the weather, they were actually able to stand outside without freezing half to death, which was a nice change of pace.

“Yes. Kelem actually suggested it, and I said ‘Let it be so’ and it was. Hanev Shamir, firstborn of Bakvi.” Bakvi smiled at this, his pride showing on his face.

“That is a good strong name, and a good choice. My grandson will bear it with much honor.” Anesh smiled as he said this, slapping Bakvi on the back in approval. “But now, if you will follow me into the barracks, we have some matters to attend to.” Both men entered through the wooden door and into the interior of the building. It was a bit drafty on the inside since no one had taken the time or care to patch up the holes that had slowly appeared over the course of the year. The house belonged to no one in particular and so the men had failed to maintain it as if it were their own home.

A large group of men had been assembled, all of them warriors of Amor. They were all tough and strong. Some of them had taken to cutting their hair so that two strips ran down their head from front to back. These strips were only about half an inch tall and insisted on standing straight up, no matter the circumstances. The rest of their head was shaved to the scalp, leaving them completely bald. The men that had chosen to adopt this style of appearance tended to be the leaders of the different squads that had naturally developed over the length of training and were often seen hanging out together while off duty. A tight bond of brotherhood had formed amongst these men, and it had been somewhat contagious. The warriors of Amor were closer knit than most other villagers, which was really the only reason that Bakvi and Anesh had allowed the men to cut their hair in such a way. The first time one of the men had shown up to training with a different hairstyle had been roughly disciplined. Over time the rules had become more lenient and more and more men had shown up with new hairstyles until they had generally settled on the one they were sporting right now.

Immediately after Anesh had entered the room, the men killed any conversation they had been having and bowed in his direction, showing him their respect and loyalty. Anesh was a powerful man, not only because of his status, but his physical presence was something in and of itself.

“Thank you for gathering here,” Anesh said after motioning for the men to return to their state of ease, “as I have something very important to tell you all. As you are all aware, our first group of warriors was ambushed some time ago while on a hunting trip further inland. Some of you men here were a part of that group and were lucky to survive the ambush. Those woodland men, as I have no other way of describing them, were strong and had powerful weapons with which they killed many. Since the time of that ambush, I will admit that I have been fearful of sending men into the forest. I did not see the value of risking your lives needlessly, especially when there was nothing to gain. But over time you have trained and learned ways to fight and survive in the wilderness. But more importantly, your numbers have grown and we now have a large force that offers the Amorcian people protection.” Anesh paused here for a moment, taking in a deep breath as he locked eyes with the different men assembled around the room. “The time has come to take a measure of revenge against these woodland men. All of you assembled will be led by Bakvi into the forest on a scouting mission. There will be a large group of you so that you will be protected by your numbers, but I must stress that this is not an active attack against the woodland men. They have better weapons than us, which proved to be crucial during the ambush. There were also many of them when they attacked us, but we are not sure how many of them actually dwell in the woods.

“What I am asking you to do is go into the forest and find their whereabouts. You will all have to be on the highest alert so that you are not ambushed again, and so that they do not realize that you are watching them. If, in the scenario that you are discovered, you are NOT to attack them. There is a possibility of learning from these men, and we cannot destroy our chances of that. However, if they are overtly hostile and do end up ambushing you, then you are free to attack them and kill as many of them as possible. But that is the only time you are to show aggression. Attack only if attacked. With some people, violence is the only answer. That is all.”

Anesh left the room behind him. Bakvi turned to the men and smiled.

“Be ready, for we leave at dusk.”

Classes

For the longest time, the Amorcian people did not have any set jobs that they were to perform. Each family member was responsible to support their own family and no one else. The tribe simply stayed together because they were of like mind, and could provide support and protection to each other from people who did not think in similar ways.

Over time, as Amorusk developed, trades started to appear within Amorcian society. Those that were more adept at fishing drew in larger loads than those that were not. These people were able harvest larger nettings and thus were able to trade to those that were not so lucky. Eventually, people started to move into different areas of production. The establishment of permanent villages made strong wooden houses a necessity, especially because of their close proximity to the colder regions of the globe. Lumberjacks and the like became more common as the demand for strong and sturdy wood increased.

Later on, tool makers began to appear, although in smaller numbers. The demand for specialized tools was not heavy, and only a smaller number of people were required to produce them. This would eventually lead into weapon making as well, specifically the bows, arrows and spears that the Amorcian people came to rely on.

One of the largest shifts came with the establishment of the warrior hunter. The Amorcian people had never relied on hunting as one of their main sources of food, but over time it became more prevalent. Originally, these hunters were also designated as the warriors of the tribe, providing not only food, but also protection. They were the strongest of the strong and became adept at using the weapons they were provided with. Within a short period of time, these people came to also represent the police force that kept order within the tribe, thus establishing a higher class from the rest of the tribespeople.

(It's a short one, but I'm working on some artwork for the Kestali people)

Stories from times past told of other tribes of people, such as the dark skinned folk who would sometimes approach from the southern lands, and the bearded white men, who used to sail boats from the north before a sudden disappearance. Although the tribe had been doing well and had expanded to a second settlement in the woodlands to the west, Cahtu felt their isolation would soon be a problem; so he decided the tribe should send emissaries into the unexplored lands, to test the rumours of the old days and find new firends. The council had the winter to plan their expedition, the two parties would be heading out at the first sign of spring to return by the time of the next harvest.

One group would head north; four labouring men, four veteran warriors, and their wives, headed by the priest Gemut. They would be sent with stone ornaments, herbs and fine drink to trade. They would travel under the blessing of the river god and forage close to the shores to sustain themselves on the long trek. The second group would head south lead by Hatham; also with four veteran warriors, four labourers, and their wives, and also with two fair virgin girls to present to those they would find, they also took dried meats and fine tools for the natives to sample, travelling under the blessing of the rain god, so that they may persevere in the dry southern lands.
