Carson skidded to a stop outside of a gas station and slowly wheeled the bike over to the burned-out storefront. He lifted it over the counter and set it down near what remained of the register before removing a pen from behind his ear. Grabbing half of a dollar bill, he scrawled out a message for the next person who found the bike. Smiling to himself, Carson pulled out a hand-rolled cigarette and lit it with his lighter. He'd finally gotten to see some zombies for the first time in a while during the ride and now that he was nearly in the city, things were going to start to heat up. Adjusting his pack, Carson stepped out of the store and headed down the sidewalk, into the city proper. It was a short jog down the main avenue and then a right at Columbus Street. The last time he'd visited Fort Solitude was about eight months prior and the path was pretty clear.

With measured steps, Carson carefully picked his way through an old row home to avoid a pair of zombies prowling about on the street outside. He peeked out into the abandoned back yard and hopped a fence to find himself alone in an alleyway. At the far end he could see an ugly pink house which was the marker for Columbus Street. He hurried along quietly and slipped onto the quiet street without much trouble. It was all very strange, the silence, and Carson didn't like it.

They drove slowly through the city streets with Mickey taking pot shots at the odd shambler from the back of the pickup, it was a silver Toyota bolted all over with steel plates and converted to run on the fuel they produced back at the fort. There was also a mounting on the back for the MG3 usually kept up on the shop roof, and that came in handy on a trip like this. Creeping up 3rd avenue they caught sight of the small horde gathered outside of the small department store where their friend was obviously hold up. The reason the zombies were there was obvious, there were quite a few dead bodies, as it seemed mostly people who weren't even armed, and some fairly fresh looking zombies too. Mickey guessed this was probably what had become of West Falls, which wasn't very far off from here.

A quick burst of acceleration caught most of the crowds attention and Mickey quickly manned the gun, firing controlled bursts into increasing crowded intersection, the truck plowed through several of them as Mickey tossed a few molotov's over the raised walls of the flat bed. The object wasn't so much to kill them all (that would waste valuable ammunition) as get as many following as possible. Freddie slowed down slow enough so they were moving at just the right speed to keep most of them in close pursuit while Mickey sat in the back and picked off the runners. Grabbing the radio mic in the cab Freddie tuned into Terrance's radio frequency to give him his instructions, which hopefully he'd hear over the commotion below.

"We need you at the bottom of that fire escape in five minutes, we're picking you up!"

The sound of the large gun echoed for blocks and Carson heard it loud and clear. That was probably where all the zombies were. He ducked into the shadows and a few stragglers made their way toward the commotion. Pulling the rifle over his shoulder, Carson peered down the scope for a moment and then continued down the street. He walked cautiously for about five minutes until a barricade blocked his way. It certainly hadn't been there before and it seemed to be holding back a rather large group of the dead. Peering through a crack, Carson spied a silver pickup truck speeding about, attracting the horde. He had no idea what was going on but it was definitely something. Reaching up, Carson flipped his radio on and scanned through the channels until he found someone describing a similar scene.

"-ottom of that fire escape in five minutes, we're picking you up!"

A rescue! Of course. Keeping his back to the barricade, Carson peered back down the empty street and pondered the situation. He could just walk away and leave things be and not have to worry about whatever was happening. But he was already right there... maybe there was something he could do. Taking another long drag from his cigarette, Carson pulled his radio close. Thick, white smoke came out of his mouth as he whispered into the mic.

"How's it going, strangers? The name's Carson and I'm just passing by on the other side of the barricade... you need an assist? Got a rifle and can play ball if you need me. Otherwise I'll just move along."

Arlenta was patrolling the perimeter of Fort Solitude when his ears picked up on the unmistakable sound of heavy MG fire. It wasn't too far, but he couldn't be sure. The buildings in cities had a tendency to act like tunnels for sound, channeling through the roadways. Made it more difficult to figure out exactly what direction it was from, but the MG was pretty freakin loud. Whoever was firing it, either didn't realize it'd bring the hordes down on them, or intended to. Not only that, they were practically throwing away ammunition on an inaccurate MG. Oh well, perhaps it was the possible nuts that were leading a horde around... perhaps they'd lead them into the trap.

He turned on the radio strapped to his pack, and started slowly turning the dial through the different channels, seeing as how organized survivors tended to favor radio to stage ambushes. Suddenly, his radio picked up, "-ust passing by on the other side of the barricade... you need an assist? Got a rifle and can play ball if you need me. Otherwise I'll just move along."

Arlenta brought the mic to his mouth, "This is Specialist Arlenta of the Army, currently in Fort Solitude. I can be there in a few minutes if you end up needing backup, or just would like my assistance. Just need a location... your MG gives me a pretty good idea though." He calmly walked towards the gate, and motioned to be let out. No need to concern the Solitude people with the troubles of a few meager survivors. Following the sound of the MG, he started to jog quickly towards it, whether they wanted him to or not.

"Yeah, this is O'Conner and son from the gun shop. I wouldn't worry about us bringing down the horde, they were pretty much all here when we arrived, but I'd stay out of Columbus street for a while. We're just down here to help out a friend, sorry to be so gung-ho about it."

About three blocks away from the department store Freddie pulled a sharp left into a narrow alley-way filled with old furnishings and rubbish, practically a kindling jackpot, but sheltered enough between the tall brick walls of the surrounding buildings to keep a big fire hidden. With not much time to waste mickey tossed another molotov into one of the scrap piles before the zombies caught up and the duo sped off again just as the horde was being goaded into the narrow opening. That'd kill off at least a few. Mickey layed off the MG fire for now, he'd done all the zombie goading he was cut out for today, instead he clambered back into the cab and picked up the radio.

"Whats the situation up at the department store, can someone clear it up enough so we can make the pick up. Also, Arlenta, I think I found our guys from West Falls."

As soon as he heard that, he immediately drank the last of his coffee in one gulp and started packing all of his supplies and equipment into the hiking pack and duffel bag he had. Several dozen shotgun shells and a few pistol clips were already in the duffel for ease of access and to keep them in one place. He turned back to the radio and switched it to O'Conner's frequency.

"O'Conner, I got all my supplies and gear packed and I'm ready to go. Whats the holdup?"
In space, no one can hear you scream unless your transmitting it on the right radio frequency.

"Ahh... hey it sounds like you've got enough help. I'm just going to make my way to Fort Solitude, they're expecting me."

Carson let go of his radio and wandered down the length of the makeshift barricade, away from the scene.

Arlenta was distracted by his thoughts. He radioed to the nutty survivors, "West Falls got Zulued... Odd. Screw ups should be rare after two years. Anyway..." He turned a corner and suddenly spotted Carson a bit down the road. Arlenta waved for a moment, a rare sight in the city, an almost full-gear soldier, minus a few less useful armor bits he'd abandoned long ago. Though, the occasional insane survivor or raider made him still value his torso armors.

Carson distracted him for a moment, but he quickly sank back into thought, considering the possibility that West Falls might've fallen to that unusual horde, though the idea seemed unlikely. Somehow the zombies had done it, someone accidentally left a gate or door open, maybe one snapped and let the horde right in. He looked back at Carson, "Headed to Solitude?"

"Yes sir. Coming from Scruggs. Said they needed a tech to fix something... so here I am!"

Carson took another puff of his cigarette and tossed the roach aside. Smoke came out his nose as he sighed.

"I offered those guys help but they more or less ignored me. Little noisy over there anyway. What're you doing out here?"

Arlenta shrugged, "Was going to go help, but it seems they have everything under control. Things are rather quiet around here usually." He turned around and started to head back to Solitude, less concerned with the 'tech,' and more concerned with the loss of West Falls, "Do you know anything specific about what happened to West Falls? Besides the evidence I just received."

Narrowing his eyes at the soldier, Carson stuffed his hands into his pockets.

"Nah sorry, don't know much about that. Lost a fuel supplier, that's pretty much it. There were always tensions up there anyway."

Arlenta grumbled to himself, "Guess I'll have to look into it myself then." As they walked, his mind turned to another issue, "Have you noticed any unusual Zul- I mean zombie movements? Like perhaps a horde or pack of them all moving in one uniform direction, without chasing prey?" The Specialist stopped walking and scratched his chin, Maybe I should go back... just to observe the horde, see if it's different than normal.

"No, I can't say that I have. In fact, we haven't seen much of any zombies out at Scruggs. Last sighting was over two weeks ago. Just hope we aren't getting rusty... haha. Haven't fired a shot in a long while."

As they walked, Carson lit up another one of his cigarettes and exhaled a long plume of white.

"Just coming up on your position now, i hope you've kept the route clear for us"

The truck pulled up right beside the fire escape, Freddie grabbed a machete and climbed out of the truck to help Terrance into the vehicle. Once the few remaining zombies had been dealt with silently, to avoid attracting the horde they'd just lost, Freddie climbed in the back with the new guy and Mickey drove back towards his shop.
