If characters had different personalities you could branch it off many ways and actually have differing responses.

The staunch and disciplined guard will hate you if you try to bribe him.
The shallow mooch will only like you when you're giving him money.
The ascetic/modest sorts will reject your attempts to give him material stuff.

Also bribes should take social status into account. A beggar might be thrilled if you give him ten gold pieces and tell you everything he knows but Moneybags McGee will just be insulted by anything less than 10,000.

Those are good ideas.  But if they thought people couldn't handle complex skills such as long sword, short sword, and axe, and had to replace them with blade, do you think they'll want to confuse them with actual game mechanics?

Actually, because few people enjoyed the speechcraft "minigame" more than likely it will be removed all together.

I'm being very pessimistic about them adding additional gameplay to this, and thinking they'll just remove stuff.

I don't think they removed all the narrow weapon categories because people couldn't handle them. I think they removed them because they were actually sort of excessive. Though paring them down to just two (four if you count unarmed and archery) was I think too severe.

Then the speechcraft minigame being excessive would be a good reason for them to keep it simple and remove it.

Besides, speechcraft can become a very content heavy skill if they do full speech again.  More options in NPC interaction would require more dialog to be written and recorded.  And at the same time everyone is hoping for more voice actors to add variety.  That would get expensive quick.

I doubt doing normal NPC conversations just in text would be acceptable to anyone at this time, even given everyone's hatred for NPCs all sounding the same.

I think splitting blade and blunt to compass two handed (two handed swords, halberds, etc), heavy (longswords, hammers, battleaxe etc), medium (shortsword, possibly makeshift weapons like instead of a warhammer an actual hammer) and light (daggers and whatever else is light) would be a more logical division. A longsword fights completely different compared to a dagger, etc.

Also an actual reason for speechcraft to exist would be awesome.
I am bloody FASHIONABLE eagle!1!

Speech hurt Oblivion's moddability hideously. Not that you could get away with a speechless big name game these days, even if the voice acting is borderline trash.

We did some math in IRC and figured out that Skyrim will feature cliff racers prominently.

Hopefully we can do a proper cliff racer genocide this time without mods.
