RPG by Question
« on: November 25, 2010, 03:28:39 am »
This will be a community-driven RPG driven by mostly yes/no questions asked by the community, and answered by a roll of the dice interpreted through me and logical interpretation. By answering questions, the action is moved along and the world and setting are created. The action is is broken into scenes, just like a movie, to keep things straight - and there will be the occasional random event to throw you guys a curveball.

So first we need to create enough of a world to begin playing in - we can flesh it out as we go. Remember, its your questions that drive this game.

We should start with global questions. Is it a fantasy setting? Is faster than light travel possible? Is it a grim setting? Is there magic in the world? Does gunpowder exist? Has a genocide occurred recently? Does everyone speak the same language? These sort of questions will help shape the adventure world fairly quickly, and the scope of them is essentially unlimited, as long as they are yes/no for now.

So basically, ask away, keeping them to yes/no questions, and next time I get back I'll go down the list answering them all, and interpreting it as logically as I can or as I see fit. I'd also appreciate it if we didn't get too silly, as I'd like a playable setting that doesn't stray into comedy.

Are the faeries highly advanced AIs given corporeal form through the use of nanomachines? Or are they actually just a physical manifestation of complex alien technology, kinda like the Jaaku Empire's "faeries", the things that hatch the monster seeds, in Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh?

Is the main character a guy? A girl? An asexual?

That's some good yes/no questions there.

By which I mean the opposite of what I just said.

Re: RPG by Question

Is magic real, or is it made up the way fairies are?
50/50 - NO, magic is not real. It is made up like faeries.

Is the main character a guy?
50/50 - YES, he is. I ignored the rest of your questions because, while intriguing, they were not yes or no questions and they were too specific. The setting has to grow and come naturally.

Is this the only accessible plane of existence?
50/50 - YES, it is.

Will there be steam-punkish techno-magic?
50/50 - YES, there will be.

Can I fly?
50/50 - YES, the main character will have the ability of flight in one way or another. Probably should've gone with unlikely for the odds for this one, but what's done is done.

Can you change the nature of a man?
50/50 - NO, apparently you can not. This is a deep question, best one that's been asked yet, and it's interesting that the result is no. Will have to see how this is interpreted.

Lobster people. That is all,
I'm gonna assume that this is "Will there be lobster people involved somehow?", in which the answer, at 50/50 odds, is NO, which is unfortunate.

Is "Lobster people" even a question?
Defs not.

Am I a sexy beast?
50/50 - NO, apparently the main character is not a sexy beast. Gonna interpret that as not particularly attractive.

Do any of the posts above even make any sense?
Some.

Seriously though, is the world flat?
50/50 - YES, the world is flat. Huh. Interesting.

Are there multiple evil overlords battling for dominance with a fanatical faction of religious zealots caught in the middle?
50/50 - YES, apparently there are. This question was a little specific-ish but we need some structure, and since the answer is yes it provides some sort of foundation for the game. Interesting.

Is this a limitless supply of extra post counts?
Mayhaps.

and is it on the back of a giant space turtle?
Unlikely - NO, indeed it is not.

Are you even going to answer any of these questions?
No, I will never answer them.

Okay, what did we work out from our first question session?

ABOUT THE SETTING
  • Magic is not real, though steam-punkish techno-magic is.
  • There is only one accessible plane of existence.
  • The nature of man is unchangeable.
  • The world is flat, not round.
  • There are multiple evil overlords battling for dominance with a fanatical faction of religious zealots caught in the middle.

ABOUT THE PROTAGONIST
  • He is a male.
  • He has the power of flight in some shape or form.
  • He is not particularly attractive.

Okay, so what we know about the setting seems to imply that it is at the very least post-Renaissance in terms of technological advances, including some "magic" in the guise of technology, possible in a steam-punkish form. The world is flat, and this is the only accessible plane of existence. There are multiple evil overlords which fight for dominance, and a fanatical faction of religious zealots are caught in the middle. That situation seems to lend credence to the fact that the nature of men is unchangeable.

About the protagonist, we've established that he is male, has the power of flight in some form - depending on the setting, this can vary from the superhero-like ability of flight, or wings, or just being a skilled pilot or something. He's also not a looker - he may be average, or he may be ugly.

Oh, and there are no lobster people ANYWHERE.

More questions need to be asked. Open topics are the nature of these evil overlords, the nature of the zealots, the religion that they are fanatical over, and fleshing out the world, both geographically, culturally, and such. Not enough of a framework to even start play has been established yet, so once we pin that down, we can get moving.

Such is the way of the internet. Unlike life, if we don't like a situation, we can ghost ourselves away. That, and my December got busy.

Seriously though, the community here is not only slow-ish (only the first 5-6 threads are ever continually posted in), but like 80% of the input is silly, goofy, retarded, or just completely off-topic or responding to the silly, goofy, retarded, or just completely off-topic of another member. Not very inspiring stuff.

So I apologize. Partly. I do need a creative output though and I don't know any other corners of the internet that would respond to **** like this, so I'm thinking of doing something that at least partially panders to the pseudo-childish crowd here. Fight Club Fantastic - something like Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior, but with no limits on the who's and what's matching up. Anyways, just throwing out ideas, not guaranteeing I'll be back, things are eating up my time.

Detoxicated's Sylvia Ji avatar does make a strong case for me to come back though.

You should have Clarified you wanted to play "seriously", and set some boundary lines. then you might have had a few more earnest responses, and a lot more vaguely mocking posts like this one (reminiscent of your post).

if you say "do anything", people assume your opening the door to a madcap style were absurdities are encouraged.

but I agree. though we don't want something heavy. good, clever humor would be a nice change of pace (my favorite writer is Mark Twain) over the usual shovels of inanity. I hate random humor on the whole.
