The Galactic Conflict - Part 2
« on: July 05, 2010, 06:20:22 am »
Directress Hatena felt a strong disturbance run through her soul as her orders were rejected and her requests cast aside by the Perrachi Socialist Republic. Yet despite the sudden backlash that this issue was bound to spread, she knew all too well that such would be the outcome of the outrageous request the she bravely submitted in front of the entire summit.

As a result, intragalactic relations with the Republic have become more strained than ever, even going as far as prompting the Orealyianis Monarchy to declare Code Orange - Green within the confines of their main territory. Other nations have also followed their example, raising their defenses and mobilizing their forces in anticipation of possibly the most damaging conflict since the Milika - Supara War.

Better to arm themselves too early, than to face, vastly unprepared, the full brunt of a major galactic power...

Hatena's thoughts begrudgingly conceded. Despite all that she has, and could have done, things continued to defiantly spiral out of her, and by extension the Agency's control. After completely exhausting all legal options left to the fractured organization, there was only one thing left for her to do...

The Directress had already made extensive preparations for the asylum of as many of the Republic's citizens as she can. Chief Enna, including her significant others, were first on Hatena's list. Barring her integral post, she'd be damned to let her fall into the potential enemy's hands. Such vital personnel would be prime targets of the Republic's secret service, and nothing positive could possibly come out of it at this point in time.

It was merely hours away by now, the coalition fleet sent to the Makal homeworld to request the Perrachi's peaceful retreat. The entire crew knew what they were jumping into with the mission they were given. The only thing uncertain now was if the Republic would accept their request, or violently turn them down.

It had been a few weeks since the liberation of Yalkna, and the Perrachi year of 3518 was nearing its end as winter would slowly give way to summer-but only in Perrawiih's southern hemisphere. Beautiful flakes of snow covered the streets and buildings of Rocziz, vast capital metropolis of the Perrachi Socialist Republic. Light reflected off of the icy powder like many-faceted crystals, and a soft pink glow emitted from it as well. However, this peaceful atmosphere did not reflect the current events with great accuracy whatsoever. Yet as snow was of the rarest of occurrences on Perrawiih, so was international turmoil on this scale.

President Dimikos Talin was visiting Yalkna once again. The plan was proceeding smoothly. The Makal had received a new constitution and a new economy, each much better than the last. Oppression had all but ended, and elections would be held in the new Makal Republic if there was no outside interference. It would take a few more months, but the Makal would hopefully be free of PSR military occupation and entirely independent for the first time ever.

Still, not all news was good news. The PSR broke with the GPA, and as a result the Eleisian Union was temporarily cutting off diplomatic relations. The Eleisian Cooperation Organization (ECO) could fall apart, and so could the Perrachi-Goonal-Bino Treaty Organization (PGBTO). Heck, the United Society of Star Systems was so deeply divided by now there actually some riots on Zessus Prime! What would happen now? It seemed that the Bino were more pro-PSR but still pacifist, while the UGP had sided with the Photos, yet were still desperate to seek common ground with the PSR.

Now a GPA coalition fleet was headed for Yalkna, apparently to request an immediate withdrawal by Perrachi forces. The top military commanders of the PSR knew that such a proposal was ridiculous; they needed months in order to build up both a friendly socialist government and especially to create a strong Makal military. Leaders continually made public statements that war would only be sought against the most tyrannical regimes, but other nations remained cautious.

As President Talin rode a shuttle to the impromptu military meeting, a large hologram poster on a building caught his eye. It showed a picture of several gooey Makal joining appendages with what was presumably a content expression. There was text below the happy image in both Perraform and the Makal language's local dialect. Talin couldn't read the incomprehensible Makal symbols, but the Perraform he knew, even with the strange native sayings.

Let us join in harmonious liberty! Support your local collective today!

"Communists," he muttered under his breath. To him it appeared as if Makal had a greater sense of community than Perrachi: A fact which could hurt his party. Imagine what the press would say if the communists made the Democratic Socialist Party look like incompetent fools! They'd be screaming for his impeachment, no doubt.

At the meeting, the various military officers and politicians agreed that their best option would be to respectfully decline the GPA's request and give good reason for doing so.
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

Yalkna; Co-ordinates (32E,40N)
A Makal by the name of Kavorki sat in one of the common chairs with the round, depressed seat scattered around the building. There was a small laser lamp in the center of the room; much like a light bulb, a laser lamp uses a laser to generate light. It bathed the room in a red glow, the semi-transparent bodies of the Makal present distorting the light. On the wall were a row of laser rifles, unloaded, waiting for combat.
"My friends. The time for uprising has come. The leader of the despicable Perrachi Socialist Republic is here on Yalkna. Our fallen deserve retribution; and the blood of this leader would serve fine." Kavorki said. He rose from his chair, crossing to the row of rifles. He removed one, and jacked in a power cell.
"To arms!" He roared, raising the rifle into the air.

Photos Medical Base Ophelin Kar
Commander Val'ones was in a bed, asleep. Sitting near him, watching the stricken Photos' vital signs was Tar'vhix. While the odds of Val'ones passing away were slim to none, the worry still pounded through his mind. He looked back at the Commander. It was the first time in a while he had seen his old friend without a helmet on; his skin, usually the purple-pink common to the Photos, was so pale it almost appeared bleached. His face was saturated with sweat. The anticite given to stop the parasite was almost as bad as the parasite it fought, making the unfortunate recipient very ill. The door at the far end of the room slid open, and a medical drone walked in. One of the modular hands was replaced with a decent-sized hypodermic syringe. It gently took the commander's arm, and carefully injected the fluid in the syringe. Medical drones had the most advanced flexibility of all the drones, due to the work they do needing to be precise. Without even looking from it's work, it said to the High Tribune;
"You know, sitting here hovering over him isn't helping him any." The drone said in it's limited-tone voice.
"I know. I just feel so bad for injecting him with this stuff." Tar'vhix said, sighing.
"I can understand that." The drone said, removing the hypodermic. He dropped it into a pan with a cold plasma field along the top, sterilizing the hypodermic as it fell in. "I have to see the direct handiwork of the injections first hand all the time. To cause such agony must be agonizing in and of itself." The drone continued.
"Wow, they program you guys with a personality so realistic, you sound like a living creature." Tar'vhix commented.
"They don't "program" our personalities, only set down basic guidelines." The drone corrected him.
"Really? I never knew that!" Tar'vhix said, surprised."
"No. We're programmed to learn. When we're first activated, we are nothing but number-crunching logic machines. But as we learn, we develop a personality."
"Wow. I never knew how developed the AI of a drone was!" Tar'vhix said.
"That's why it's called artificial intelligence. Emotion is part of intelligence. Logic only get's you so far." The drone said over it's shoulder, exiting the room. Tar'vhix looked at the commander. He sighed, and walked out of the room as well.

Yalkna; Distant Orbit

A brief yet massive cascade of light erupted from the very bowels of empty space as a flotilla of different vessels returned to normal space just beyond Yalkna's planetary border. The multitude of crafts bore a dazzling variety of forms, giving off a an air of multiplicity within the similarly emblazoned fleet of ships. There was absolutely no doubt about it. The thickly fashioned cyan linings which bordered the chrome-plated medallions that in turn collectively heralded both the central galactic insignia and the half-tinted sphere that hovered shortly above it.

These craft were clearly sent by none other than the Galactic Protection Agency itself.

Without a moment to waste, the coalition fleet quickly sent a message to the planet's main communications network in an attempt to elicit the attention of the primary officials responsible for handling the Perrachi-occupied planet of Yalkna.

"And so several have begun uprisings in the name of vengeance. Their goal is most probably restoration of the monarchy, so I daresay the reactionary rebels comprise a very small percentage of the whole population, likely less than 1%."

"Luckily we all know how to fight against this sort of thing. It's a good thing we don't use the same tactics against conventional armies that we do against guerrillas. I heard some species still are, and their success rate against said guerrillas is unusually low."

Most people in the room chuckled at the President's sarcastic humor. Suddenly, a multitask robot floated quickly into the room and displayed a hologram message.

"Kind sirs, it appears that the fleet sent by the Galactic Protection Agency has just pulled out of hyperspace. They are hailing the President directly."

Talin looked around a bit.

"I just realized how convenient it is how a large portion of the PSR leadership is located in the same room. All right, hail them."

"As you wish, Mr. President."

Just as the holographic images of the GPA leaders appeared, Talin took the opportunity and immediately started to speak.

"Greetings, fellow sapients. It seems to me that you are requesting a withdrawal of PSR forces from Yalkna ASAP. Well, I'm afraid that can't be done. You see, we need months to set up a proper, stable, and democratic socialist government. I know that propping up a class-divided republican bureaucratic mess or a corrupted military dictatorship would be easier, quicker, and more in your interests, but we have certain standards of fairness, justice, and equality here. I assure you that months are in fact shorter than years, so you need only to be patient and then we will withdraw all forces. We have yet to work out an exact deadline for withdrawal, but I'm estimating late Fa or early Sol next year. Now then, what do you wish to converse with us about?"

((Fa and Sol are Perrachi months, respectively the fourth and fifth. It is currently the eighth and final month.))

How quaint...

"Fairness?", the Chief of Investigations quickly remarked before anyone else can, and with an obvious hint of sarcasm no less. "Literature really isn't my specialty, your excellency, but my irony meter seems to have shot through the roof after I heard your fourth to last sentence...", he ended rather dryly, thinly veiling his disgust. "If my memory serves me right, which it should and currently is, a certain someone from the Republic was the one who gave the green light in liberating the undoubtedly oppressed peoples of Yalkna, casually dismissing the Agency's comparatively more sane request for confirmation on the matter. It could have, I dunno, taken two hours to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that the local government was in no way as corrupt as the Lowlerian nightmare that some people consider it to be, tops. But no, that certain someone just had to let his sense of urgency overwhelm him to the point of being an unwitting tool."

"But I digress.", the chief added in a seemingly more serious tone, just as the other chiefs . "We all have to make massive politically-motivated, and not to mention corpse-strewn blunders once in a while, am I right? Or am I absolutely right?", he ended his statement with an aura that would make lesser people sink into their seats. He knew then and there that such words couldn't possibly affect someone as stern as Talin, at lest externally. Still, it was the most he could pull out before the other officers finally cut him off.

"Enough of this.", both Valgus continued with a vastly more solemn stroke. "President Talin and all other officials to whom it may concern. We are quite certain you are already aware of the coalition's purpose here on Yalkna. Truth be told, most of the management are ready to dismiss any of their personal ill wills against the Republic. However, the Galactic Protection Agency as a body, is tied to a central code of law which every member must dutifully subscribe towards."

"By invading, and subsequently occupying a sovereign nation without due discourse between all parties involved, or at the very least equal representation of evidence from both groups, the Perrachi Socialist Republic has performed a major breech in the Agency's code, and is therefore liable to what they have thus performed regarding the situation at hand."

"Put briefly: The Perrachi Socialist Republic is hereby charged with the unconstitutional invasion and occupation of a fellow sovereign nation, the Makal Government."

"In accordance with the Board's direct orders, the Perrachi Socialist Republic is hereby requested to withdraw all of their forces from the planet Yalkna and all other Makal-held systems."

"Reflect on the Republic's recent actions and choose one's response wisely, all officials concerned."

"This will be our final request for compliance."

((Lowler = Orwell.))

Talin turned to his associates.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I believe these fine folks have been receiving all their news from the tabloids rather than their intelligence agency. Who's up for any complying?"

A resounding no.

"Good." Talin faced the GPA Chiefs. "We are more concerned with important, realistic expectations right now, so please turn around and go home while we create a free state run by the people. Got it? Good. Have a nice day."

The transmission was cut.

As transmissions from Yalkna subsequently died off, mixed emotions can be felt all across the central office. The halting of communication was the proverbial straw on the flueluvu's back which symbolized the Agency's long-enduring patience. The Republic has made its choice, and they must now, reluctantly, respond to it...

With fire.

Yalkna; Distant Orbit

Communication lines began to fall silent all over the formation as the fleet's many crew solemnly prepared for what soon lied ahead. For several minutes, the menagerie of vessels seemed to have fallen into a collective form of stasis, showing zero response to any message the Perrachi occupiers might have in the meantime decided to deliver to them.

Finally, all of this was broken after a certain distant transmission.

//This is Directress Hatena Rolu...

Do what you must...//

Yalkna; Near Orbit

All across orbit, multiple signatures began to flash all over the Perrachi's sensors. No amount of hailing managed to make them stop, however, as everyone who tried to do so quickly found out. As the seconds passed and the objects flew closer, their numbers seemed to grow by the hundreds, if not the thousands. The larger ones became almost visible to the planetsides, as they began to emit a rather ominous set of lights.

As Yalkna and its inhabitants realized what was happening, a barrage of messages echoed across the skies, its origin quickly deduced by the holographic symbol that promptly coalesced in the more populated regions of the occupied world.

//This is the Galactic Protection Agency Coalition Fleet!

We are hereby sent to forcefully expel the unconstitutionally deployed occupational forces of the Perrachi Socialist Replubic!

To all Republican forces who wish to avoid needless use of violence, fall back NOW!

This is your final warning!//

Yalkna; Co-ordinates (32E,40N)
In the back of the room came the GPA speech, through a stationary communications system.
"Send back a response." Kavorki said.
"But Kavorki, if we transmit, it'll give our location away." Said one of his fellow rebels, a young Makal named Neithal.
"I'm aware of that, young one. But we have nothing to fear. If the Galactic Protection Agency is in orbit, they should support us, so long as they know what we are doing. Thus, sending them the transmission." Kavorki explained.
"Oh, I get it!" Neithal said, opening the transmit program on the system and imputting the GPA flagship as the target. He powered up the camera, and turned on the microphone. "It's all yours, sir." He said, stepping out of the picture.
"Greetings GPA commander. My name is Kavorki, of the Makal. My associates and I are leading a guerrilla rebellion against the PSR here on Yalkna. Keep us in the loop, we're going to start our uprising at the same time you begin your attack, to maximize confusion. I would like to say more, but the longer I make this transmission, the better chance of being located we have. Kavorki, out!" Kavorki said, cutting the channel. He looked at his "associates". They had all swore to upheave these invaders, with their lives if need-be. It was now time to see if they meant it.

Ophelin Kar; Near Orbit
Tar'vhix sat at his computer in his current room on the Annihilator, the Devastator's sister ship, reading over the GPA News Bulletin. One particular article drew his attention instantly;

Situation Tense Over Yalkna!
It is day two of what has been described
as the "Galactic Conflict", and there is a
good chance that we could see more fierce
fighting within the hour! This whole mess
started when the Perrachi Socialist Republic,
or PSR for short, invaded the peaceful Makal
Empire, which has a Monarchy for a government.
Acting on news of apparent "oppression", the
PSR launched a large scale invasion. The Empire, with it's
underdeveloped military, fell quickly, despite intervention
of both Photos and Ni'call fleets. Enraged, the Photos
launched a counter-attack against the PSR, due to the
attacking of their ships, as well as the shooting down of
several unarmed shuttles escorting government officials
from the surface of Yalkna. However, retribution was not
the only contributing factor, as it was soon discovered that
the Photos commander, Val'ones Dal'buren, had consumed
food tainted with a form of paracite that induced what
could best be described as a moderate psychotic rage.
He is currently admitted to a medical facility belonging to
his own empire. At the moment, there is a moderate fleet
of GPA ships around Yalkna, preparing to launch a liberating
assault against the PSR occupants. More on this story later.

He rose from his chair and made his way to the bridge of the Annihilator. When the elevator door opened, he walked over to the commander.
"Um, excuse me?" He asked.
"Can I help you?" The commander turned to him.
"Yes, uh, I was reading on the GPA News Bulletin, and there's a stand-off going on in the Makal home system between GPA and PSR forces.
Given we're part of the GPA, shouldn't we go there?" Tar'vhix asked.
"Why yes, High Tribune! You're absolutely correct." The commander said, looking over at the sensor operator. "Why was this not brought to my attention?"
"I never picked up a peep on our system, sir. Honest." She said. The commander shot Tar'vhix a dirty look. "Bring the GPA News Bulletin up on your computer." He said. She obliged, and there it was, clear as day.
"Well. Alright folks, set course for Yalkna, drop out in far orbit!" The commander said. When they dropped out of warp, they immediately opened a channel with the GPA fleet.
"We heard through the News Bulletin." The commander explained.

Coalition Flagship; Yalkna; Near Orbit

"I see.", the commander warmly replied. "May this operation be as swift, and as efficient, as possible. For all of our sakes!"

Turning to his own crew, the captain peered into all of them, searching each and every one of their souls for the slightest tinge of hesitation. It was a perfectly natural thing, to have second thoughts regarding the nature of their current adversaries. To the hands of his ship, it was a sign of their humanity, the lingering will which opposes their orders to fire upon their own brethren. Now, that same emotion, which drives them to free this wounded nation, will also play against those very same warriors in this crucial struggle for ideology, and justice.

"Listen everyone!", the commander hailed the entire fleet. Clearing his throat, he promptly began to speak.

"Make no mistake!

Our enemy today is NOT the Perrachi Socialist Republic,
or any other sovereign power!

Our enemy today is NEITHER their underlying ideologies,
nor any other precious beliefs!

No!

What we stand to oppose here today is none other than CORRUPTION!

The corruption of those traits,
the defilement of their very tenets!

THAT is what we are up against here today!

And now, as we collectively raise our swords defiantly against this great menace,
I want everyone to keep in their hearts this great body's most solemn of oaths!

To Protect This Galaxy From The Scourge Of The Multiverse!

May victory be with us all!"

As the commander finished his words and the combined fleet began to set themselves to motion, the invigorated officer turned to another matter as he caught the attention of one of his nearby aides. "Send a message to the resistance; In Yalkna's local language.", the commander ordered the subordinate. "Tell them to watch the night sky. This sign will appear in the next matter of minutes.", he finished as he showed the officer what to look for using a small sheet of transparent paper.

"Let's do this..."

Provisional Government HQ, Yalkna

Talin and co. were about to hail their military personnel when a message was received informing the commanders of a monarchist rebel group's contacting of the GPA.

"It's like they actually enjoy not having freedom of speech nor the right to vote. Have we locked in on their position?"

"To within the inch, Mr. President."

"Crush them."

Yalkna Orbit

The orders had been transmitted. It was war! As every single warship flew into space to confront the invaders, fury raged in the minds of soldiers. How dare the so-called Galactic Protection Agency attempt to force their own constitution upon this fledgling democracy? The majority of Makal citizens on the planet's surface were angry as well. These Perrachi had come as liberators! The people now had freedom! Of course, many still wondered if Talin's speeches of withdrawal were indeed true, or if they had simply traded one occupier for another. Still, it was better than the dictatorship.

Reinforcements were already arriving from other PSR systems as well, joining the advancing armada. Ships from Perrawiih would take at least a few hours, though. Although no match for the GPA fleet with their current numbers, they would be able to easily stall long enough for the big guns to get there.

A generic Top Secret scientific research facility

It was actually working. The quarks were converting all other matter! The PSR now had strange matter technology! What a horrible weapon...

A dark and shadowy secret meeting place

"Strangely enough, those GPA buffoons are right about one thing, comrades. Corruption. Those fools in the Talin-Khadenin administration are already forgetting what government by the people means because of this ridiculous war. But very soon the advantage will be ours. We will be the vanguard, and the proletariat will rule. It's only a matter of time."

Coalition Flagship; Yalkna; Near Orbit

"Do it.", the commander ordered one of his aides as he opened a holographic map depicting the entire planet's surface and everything within its orbit.

Your excellency, President Talin...

I hope you don't come to regret...

The irony of your final choice...

Yalkna; Night-side

As both sides came into position, several spheres of light began to illuminate the starlit sky. Upon closer inspection, the set of glowing objects, which happened to be flares, formed a rather familiar pattern when viewed from the occupied people's perspective.

It was a constellation, or at least the mimicry of one. It was something which the members of the Agency, who were far more eager to see things through the Makal's own cultural perspective, were far more aware of than the Republic, who instead chose to supplant such views in place of their own.

"Affirmative!" The commander said.
"Xylanis Opairis and Waratica ships, move to land troops onto Yalkna's surface! All other ships, begin charging anti-matter weaponry! Focus shields to front, and get into barrage formations! Remember, we're at war here! If a PSR ship get's in your cross hairs, do not hesitate to shred it!" The commander continued. The ships began following their respective orders. The Opairis and Waratica ships had to cut a swathe through the PSR fleet, which sounds a lot easier than it is in practice. In all likelihood, they would have to wait until the rest of the fleet got their anti-matter guns online to clear the way.

Shall we get a move on then?!", the Luzonian commander rallied his troops. Broadcasting to the rest of their fleet, he began to string together order upon order as he carefully orchestrated every unit's movements. The heftier vessels of the group quickly began to unleash a massive torrent of prismatic and ionizing fire at the Perrachi's defending forces. Fighters, bombers and all manners of other smaller vessels swiftly joined the battle, supporting the bombardment until there's finally enough room for the compliment of drop-ships to successfully make their landfall.

//ALL HAIL AGUILARIA! ALL HAIL THE KNIGHTHOOD!//, everyone chanted in unison as the fighting intensified and other members quickly followed suit.

The Chivi Imperial Fleet wasn't one to simply watch their Luzonian allies safely in the distance. With a single word, the fleet's admiral sent her brethren to battle as countless others promptly boarded their stations.

//All stormtroopers, ready for impact!//, the chief admiral hailed her comrades. //Once you're down there, show those guys exactly what we've got!//

Everyone obliged as their pods were loaded firmly to their carriers' respective catapults. The completely decked-out troopers, practically armed to the beak, thoroughly checked their systems before clamping their armor shut and tightly sealing their transport.

Back on the bridge, the admiral and her aides were rounded up in the area, ready to recalculate their tactics whenever it proves necessary.

A considerably-sizable detachment of the Choro Deidalus Experimental Weapons Fleet was stationed within the varied fleet. Though not primarily for combat, the situation at hand proved to be a fine opportunity to test the Agency's experimental systems on the Perrachi's stellar navy.

//This is gonna be a pretty busy day!//, the officer-in-charge remarked rather jovially. //Load up the big ones! Let's start this with a bang!//

An eerily familiar wave of slightly distorted space shook across the planet's orbit as chorus of ethereal echoes permeated the defending fleet. One by one, small pockets of light quickly gave birth to Atomna as they plunged themselves like fangs on the prey that stood before them. Fighters, bombers, warships and stations, the black horde spared nothing in their quest to swarm their enemies.

They were not alone however, as the elusive Orealyianis subspacers, and their compliment of infiltrators, lurked in alternate space, picking off targets as they briefly sprang to existence.

More conventional Orealyianis forces also made their appearance.

Warship upon warship hurled salvo upon salvo of SEACESSVs and MLMs as carriers far behind them quickly deployed their armors. Variable armors swept the field of battle as an equal number of forces prepared to spearhead Yalkna's very surface.

Elsewhere in the fleet, application of force was already equally apparent.

And it was only going to get bigger, as the fight for liberation continued to light the starscape.
