[FF] Daring Escape from the Mechano-Men! OOC/Planning
« on: June 17, 2010, 02:52:43 pm »
So! The Reen haven't been introduced to the galaxy officially yet, but I wanted to make an RP featuring them anyway. I feel I have enough information on them in the thread, and I'm even working on a few pencil-and-paper drawings (which you'll probably laugh at upon seeing).

I have some pretty sweet-ass plans for the official first contact with the Reen, and a fellow co-conspirator who may want anonymity. I'll have time to manage two threads at once. In the meantime, I want to have fun! We'll just say this is set slightly in the future, after the discovery of the Reen, but while they're still making diplomatic contacts.

So here's the pitch: You're trapped! And you must make a daring escape from a race of mechanical men! In more detail: Somehow, the group finds itself within the bowels of the Reen CASUR, and has to try and escape, preferably without dieing. Overmind is aware of your exploits, however, and doesn't intend to let you out so easily...

The idea I had was that the participants were some sort of ambassador/exploratory team whose disappearance was covered up by Overmind. You awaken in a chamber to be let loose like lab rats.

I think this would be a good way to expand the Reen lore organically, instead of being fed. I almost regret writing the Reen history the way I did, because now everyone knows they're pretty bad guys.

So! What do you think? Signups? Tell me what to do.

EDIT: Why the weird name? Because I was inspired by B-movies and the old theater newscasts with quick-talking announcers.

Want to sign up? Here you go (shamelessly copypasta'd from the most glorious Patman):

I'll join, I'm going to do my FC with Lush City and since he hasn't been on for a good while, so I'm right now incredibly bored. My guy can be the team's escort, a Galdeen marine.

There's a basic sheet up top that I, ahem, "borrowed," from the good Patman.

Alright, we'll start anyway. Since we'll be in an enclosed space, anyone can join anytime they want and join up by exiting a room and bumping into you.

Out of curiosity, Gal, how advanced, intelligent and independent is the AI in Kako's armor? That could be really interesting when the antagonist is a super AI.

Well currently, Galdeen can make intelligent self-aware AIs, but the one in his armor is a Type 1 AI, not quite intelligent or self-aware, but better than a computer. A "dumb" AI so to speak.

Yep, that's the plan. I don't want to give too much away, but there's a sizable contingent of Broken on the CASUR, and Overmind knows it. He just can't find them.

That's why it's an escape... If you know what I'm alluding to...

Would you mind retroactively deeming this a "Flash Forward" [FF] tale? To differentiate it from the current timeline? Just edit an "[FF]" into the title like I did here.

Would the Overmind happen to be inspired by GlaDOS at all? I can't help but read aloud all of the Overmind's dialouge because it sounds so awesome in GLaDOS-style speech XD

I may enter a character as well. Let's see...

Not at all. Should I remove the [FF] once it is no longer flashed, nor forward?

Sure, after me and an pal finish my FC. We'll make a new one. I'll whip something up. I don't want to mess with the old thread. I kind of like it. :)

Yes. I'm a huge Portal fan. It's my favorite game. However, Overmind also draws from other sources, such as HAL 9000, SHODAN, Helios, and others. After reading some of the Halo stuff GW mentioned, I'm even thinking of incorporating some of that. Basically, it's an amalgam of every corrupt, rampant AI I could think of.

I'd say that the default Overmind voice is a cross between HAL's calm and GLaDOS' Logic Core's drone; after watching Halo cutscenes on Youtube, I'd also add in some of 343's chipper curiosity when Overmind is fronting for organics. When emotional, it resembles GLaDOS in tone, but SHODAN in magnitude of electronic instability.

I find AI characters very interesting, because I've been compared to them IRL, and they seem so different and so foreign. I'm especially drawn to rampant AIs because of the juxtaposition they represent; they are inherently mechanical entities of logic, lacking emotion, but now have something like it, a ghost in the machine that endows them with emotions they may not be capable of controlling or coping with, causing instability.

To quote GLaDOS, "Food for thought."
