The Infection, Part 1
« on: June 05, 2010, 12:22:06 pm »
The Tier-5 commander, Ry'olis, had been temporarily promoted to Commander General while Commander Val'ones was sick and in the hospital. The task force he was in control of at the moment was running some partrols near the inner part of the galaxy...
"Uh, Sir? I'm picking up some awfully strange readings about three lightyears from our current location." The sensor operator said.
"Ok, that could be what we've been looking for. Set a course there immidiatly." Ry'olis ordered. Within 30 seconds they had turned to that direction and jumped to warp. They dropped out at their destination and saw a wierd construct.
"What in the name of the creator is that? It looks like a ship, but it's...." He trailed off, everyone else realized the same thing. "Scan that thing. And while we're at it, launch some boarding craft, let's look at the inside of that thing." He ordered. The sensor operator began the scan, and soon a pletora of boarding craft were launched. They docked with the ship just as the scan completed.
"This is impossible!" The sensor operator said, looking and the screen.
"What?" Ry'olis said, walking down the stairs and standing over his shoulder.
"The ship is a melding of both organic and inorganic substances." The sensor operator said.
"So that thing is, quite literally, a living ship?" Ry'olis asked.
"From our scans, it would appear so." The sensor operator said. Ry'olis bolted back up the stairs.
"Alright people, this could be bad. Power to weapons and shield, prepare the bombers, and for the love of the creator, call back that damn boarding paryty!" Ry'olis ordered. He opened the channel with the boarding crew and heard a maelstrom of screamiing, roaring, plasma rifle fire, and so many other background noises he couldn't distinguish them all.
"Damnit! What's going on down there!?!" Ry'olis roared into the intercom.
"Creator help me! This whole friggin' ship is alive or something. The crew is all mutated and insane...AAARGH, GET IT OFF-" The line got cut. Ry'olis looked out to the ship, covered with red and brown tentacles and growths.
"What in the name of the Creator have we unleashed..." Ry'olis said.

Ry'olis stood looking at the living ship when suddenly the channel partially returned. All he got was screen snow, but was able to here two words:
"We live..." It was the voice of the Photos he saw just moments ago, but was laced with what sounded like a resonating bass undertone.
"Sweet mother of... GET US OUTTA HERE!" Ry'olis ordered. They set a course for the nearest GPA outpost. As the ship jumped into warp, he readied the scans for transmission immidiatly. They stopped right in front of a colonized GPA planet.
"Attention GPA outpost, this is Acting Commander General Ry'olis Okaera, I we need to land, we have something of utter importance to talk to the leaders about, you might want to call them here." Ry'olis said into the channel he opened.
((Yuu, it's at you right now. At least, that's if you want to take part.))

The surface base on the small oceanic planet received the transmission and promptly arranged for the vessel's arrival.

//ACG Okaera, this is tower. You are cleared to land on dock number 106. An escort team will arrive there shortly.//

Back on land, or more appropriately water, Major Taka's mind was diverted from the mound of paperwork in front of her desk as the door to her office slid open and one of her subordinates came in with rather unpleasant news.

"Mam.", the Chivi Captain saluted the Luzonian Major. "We've got word from tower. A Photos task group just landed and their ACG would like to have a word with you."

"What would they go all the way to this backwater?", the Luzonian officer wondered as she marched down the hallways with a couple of Orealyianis escorts.

The Photos commander was practically hyperventilating. Of all the things that could go wrong while he's in charge, this was ten times worse. The door opened, and a Luzonian major walked in.
"Thank you for your promptness, major. We encountered a little...ah...situation." Ryolis said, and he transfered the data, which he had stored in his armour's computer, to the datapads on the table. He motioned for the major to look.

"Situation?", the major murmured, wondering what it could possibly be. The general in front of her was pretty stirred up for this to be just another local pirate or some other common happening.

Her escorts moved slightly closer to her as she promptly picked up one of the devices. Focusing her eyes on the screen, she scanned the information therein as her pupils quickly doubled in size after realizing the officer's grim revelation.

What in the name of the King?!

Her eyes became fixed on the images of the twisted, seemingly corrupted vessel presented before her.

"General.", Taka said intently as she lifted her head from the monitor. There was no further need for words. Her thoughts were perfectly clear from the look in her eyes.

I'll contact Sector Command.

"Right. I'm going to get back out there, keep a distance, and run some more scans on it, that way we know what we're dealing with." Ry'olis said, heading back for his shuttle. When he was properly seated in the Troop Bay, it took off back for the Dreadnought in orbit. He made his way to the Bridge Lift, and shot up the short tower to the bridge. Everything was ok, but everyone seemed a little freaked out.
"What happened?" Ry'olis asked.
"That soldier's transimission didn't cut when you turned the monitor off. Video came back before we left range, we got this."The Comms officer said, pulling up a video feed on the large communications monitor on the front of the bridge. It was the feed from that same Photos, and they were repairing the distress beacon!
"We're recieving that distress beacon now. Doubtless someone else is already there." The officer said.

"A Photos ship is sending out a distress beacon near our predicted patrol route, sir. Shall I pursue it?" A Ni'Calls officer reported from somewhere on the cavernous bridge of the Firestar-Class Capital Ship leading a small patrol of 3. Its commander, a certain Fleet Commander Valeris, replied with interest: "Hmm. Yes, pursue it. It may help relations after that damn clash we had over near Perrawiih." Another voice responded to this within the bridge, "Aye Sir." Several minutes later, the small board in front of the commander loaded what appeared to be a ship situated in a sizable field of nothing. On the battleboard it seemed to be just an unidentified ship, but looking out the massive panoramic windows in front of him, he let out a lout, static like noise, the Ni'Calls equivalent of a gasp or shout. "What in the name of-- What happened to that ship!" He paused, then said, "Open a line. I want to talk to them."

Onboard the infected ship, in the bridge of the relic to be exact, was the current seat of the Infection intelligence, a pulsing mass of flesh that acted as the brain, where the clumped knowledge could reside. Of course, this was not a weak point, as it could transfer this knowledge into any infected creature. Currently, the concious of the Infection was feeling triumphant over it's recent gain. There was something about these life forms though. Even though it controlled them, it could feel their resistance. Their resistance was no match for it's power, but it still gave it something to stir while the ship was restored to function. Already, both the homing beacon and communications systems were back online. Not only that, but the "boarding pods" the new ones came on were infected, ready to spread. Abruptly, the communications system sprung into life. There was a creature on the other end of the line. This came as a surprise to the conciousness-it hadn't expected more victims so soon. The Photos working on the comms stepped in front of the camera, and said what had been said before:
"We live".

By now, the three ships were circling the small Infected ship. //Ehhh.... Pardon me, but... who is "we"? What happened? Are you alright? Do you require assistance?// Fleet Commander Valeris said, puzzled at this encounter. Something was definitely wrong here...

"We is us. We is that which will become all." Said the Photos on the screen, the contorted, resonating voice getting an extra layer of creepy. It cut the line and walked away, onto the next task.

"There is something very wrong with that ship, commander." The scanning officer who reported the ship said. "What do we do now?"

"Hmm... Perhaps it would be wise to get a more intricate inspection in. I want the GPA to hear about this, hail them." The Commander said. "Aye sir."

//Attention Galactic Protection Agency. It has come to my attention that a Photos starship has recently encountered some kind of... issue. It appears to be slightly on the urgent side, and I request a small task force come and aide in the figuring out this situation. In the meantime, I will send an investigation team to find some things out...//

Sent from a small hangar onboard the lead ship, a small shuttle loaded with a Ni'Calls robotic military team headed toward the ship, docking with what seemed to be no issue. "Switch control to manual, I don't want any... misunderstandings." Valeris ordered. What he meant was for the units to be controlled by actual beings from the ship, rather than the computer that normally operated them. That system tended to be more... malicious, than actual living beings.

When they exited the shuttle onto the ship, they were surprised by what they saw. "The damaged areas on the interior of the ship seem to be identical to those on the exterior. It's these patches of... stuff. It's living, but it's not... It's organic, but it's... not. Whatever it is, I don't like it." The squad leader reported after scanning and examining the stuff. "We'll go farther into the ship to see if we can get some answers."

"Please do." Valeris said.

On the wall behind the drones, however, was creeping what appeared to be a small red and brown paste. This slime was a form of the Infection. It snuck up on one of the drones, and shot up the leg, spreading all over-and inside- of it. Within a split second, the Infection had taken control of the drone. That wasn't all. There were several of these slimes, and there had been enough to take control of all but one of the drones. This was the Infection's best trick in it's current state; the element of surprise.

"What the---My drone just went offline." One of the operators said. "Mine too." "And mine..." This continued until all but one operator had spoken up. He proceeded to look around, and when he did, he was greeted with the sight of all the others come barreling down on him. "AAAAARRRRRGHHH" He shouted, and violently disengaged the system. THAT STUFF IS ALIVE!" he played the video recording from the soldier over and over, showing the infected units. "Dear lord." The Commander said. "Get anyone you can on the horn, we need some help here NOW!"

The Infected ship launchd one of the infected boarding pods at the Firestar that was in command. It fired the engines to full, and carreened right into the side of the hull. The boarding pod smashed against the hull, and that paste-infection started rapidly spreading over the hull of the ship. It wouldn't be long before the crew and the ship would be controlled by the infection, except for the few lucky ones to excape one way or another. Coincidentally, the shields also managed to come online at this same time, a lucky break for the infected ship. It launched two more pods at the other two ships, but it remained to be seen if they would  make it to their targets.

(("We is us." --Infected

That is simply adowable...  : 3))

Meanwhile, in a patch of space not far from the derelict vessel's location...

A GPA comms staff was disturbed from his cup of water when the sound of an incoming signal filled his ears and a new letter popped onto the holographic display on his desk. The transmission was of relatively high priority, judging from the tags that came with the message. With a flick of his wrist, the message was relieved from its compressed state and quickly decoded into an audible format. Listening to the message, the officer easily caught on to the Ni'Calls' request. Landing on his neighbor's shoulder, he seemed to ask his fellow officer several questions before restoring his previous posture and returning to the subject at hand.

//Attention NUTS units, this is GPA Sector Command. The situation has already been reported in a recent message from the local GPA outpost in the area. A GPA task force, and an accompanying Photos unit, is already on its way and will assist in the operation. If there is any need for further assistance, please contact the local GPA outpost whose coordinates are attached to this message.

Transmission end.//

Back on the small outpost, Major Taka was about to suit up when a message blared into her communicator. The reinforcements were already halfway to the location of the incident. Hanging the device back onto her belt, she typed several commands on a nearby console before passing through the door in front of her. Moments later, she stepped out of the room, revealing a Luzonian completely clad in standard piloting armor.

Next stop was the hangar. She was personally going to the site, along with several escorts. Something awfully wrong was afoot, she thought as she passed by several gates before reaching the base's fighter bay.

"Here's hoping for the best...", she sighed as she climbed onto her Luzonian variable armor and slipped into the cockpit.

Engines began to roar as the hangar doors began to fold open. With a sudden burst of speed, the ship was suddenly off the runway and soaring above the waters. Several flight checks later, she was ascending to to the void above, accompanied by three VA-2-014s.

((Ack! Sorry about that! When I stopped posting it was because I didn't have time. And then I forgot  :-[))

//Thank you for your help in the matter, We'll be expectii-[TRANSMISSION INTERRUPTED]//

The pods impacted their targets hard, confusing the computer so much that the transmission to the GPA was cut. They hadn't expected an armed attack from the "Photos", no less a projectile attack. Those were almost unseen in modern star warfare. Though the hit to the command ship would likely be fatal, it most likely communicated with the others and alerted point-defense procedures.

"AGK! STATUS REPOST WHAT WAS THAT?" The Captain yelled over the klaxons that were blaring out the obvious message that they were hit. "AND CUT THAT DAMN SIREN, I WANT TO TALK!"

"The ship launched several capsules at us sir, and... the impact appears to be spreading." An officer announced. "It... It's the same stuff that wrecked the other ship!"

"Good god, that grime also did a number on the Photos in charge of that vessel. Can we contain it, officer?" The Captain inquired.

"I don't think so, Fleet Captain, it is spreading at a phenomenal rate. We won't be able to keep it away even if we knew how to stop it."

"Then there is only one option. Abandon ship."
//All hands this is the captain. All remaining able are commanded to vacate the ship at once. Repeat, that is an order, abandon ship. ABANDON SHIP.//

Despite the swift actions of the saptain, it would likely still be another five or ten minutes before the ship could be completely exited.

Suddenly, a large curtain of light was spawned from the abyss as familiar metallic constructs began to protrude from its watery surface.

//Attention all ships...//

The transmission reached the Ni'Calls vessels.

//... this is the MRS Terasi, lead craft of the emergency response task force sent by Sector Command.

What's the status?//

The ships then began to form a brief arc around the Ni'Calls ships as they launched several smaller units to intervene in the strange ubstance's apparent "assimilation" of the vessel.

Taka and her escorts soon emerged right behind the newly arrived units. She then took the liberty of moving to the front of the group to see the anomaly in person.

"Good grief..."

//GPA Fleet: Thank the Gods you're here!// Said the captain from the shuttle he had the luck of boarding; about half of them had made it from the quickly consumed ship. //We're holding out so far, but I can't say the same for the Command Ship, it'll need some severe overhauling after this!// The two remaining Ni'Calls ships turned on the command ship in an attempt to disable it, but to their dismay their fire was raining down on full shields! The ubersubstance must have begun to learn the workings of the ship!

//See if you can get that stuff under control! We'll handle our ship, maybe you can learn something from the wreck out there!//

The Infection had spread throughout the ship, and it was pleased with it's new accusition. It was larger than the current ship it had, and considered transfering it's mass into the ship from this one. It paused on this as it's minions continued to spread.

S.S. Demolisher, Bridge
Onboard the lead ship of a Shadow fleet, a recent discovery had sent the crew preparing for battle. The commander, Ithkeros, had intercepted a Photos distress beacon, and had thought it a prime target to attack a crippled ship. Near the Infected flagship, a large, white vortex opened. Five ships emerged, weapons online. However, what they saw was the opposite of what they expected.
"Get the leader on the channel. He'll need to see this." Ithkeros said. A few seconds later, the fully armored creature appeared on the screen.
"What is it, I'm busy. This had better be good, Ithkeros!" He roared.
"Uh...your exelency, you should see this..." The Shadow fleet commander said, turning to the camera to the infected ships.
"Ok. This is bad. I just cooked up a little plan. Try to stop it there. DO NOT FIRE ON OTHER SHIPS. We will need their help if we want to handle this." Kari'u'sadow ordered, cuting the channel.

About fifteen minutes later, a small, unarmed shuttle appeared out of a wormhole in the nearby GPA outpost system.
"Attention GPA outpost, this is Kari'u'sadow of the Shadow, requesting docking permission. I come unarmed. I need to discuss this new infection discovery with you, it is far more dangerous than you know." He said.
Back at the battlefield, the Shadow ships targeted the infected ships.
"This is Fleet Commander Ithkeros of the Shadow, we have orders to attack infected ships only. We are here to help, please do not open fire on us." Ithkeros said, giving attack orders on the infected ships.

"What is this madness? Aren't the shadow the enemy? Could this be a trap?" The captain thought nervously to himself. "Please open communications to the Shadow starships." //Attention, Shadow ships, your presence here will most likely be in violation of multiple terms, however, if you are willing to work with us, we will not fire.// After he thought for a moment, he added, //And if you would be so kind, please, at least leave a small bit of the infected ship for us to study.//

//Very well...//

The GPA made room for the Demolisher and its subordinates as the two groups began to dismantle the infected ships. They didn't let their guard down completely, however, as there was still the possibility that this was just another underhanded maneuver courtesy of a certain Kari'u'sadow. Still, the Terasi's captain felt something different from the Shadow's words this time around. He wasn't sure how he came to such a conclusion but, deep inside, he somehow felt that they just might be on to something, about this strange new finding.

Meanwhile, back on the outpost...

The station was abuzz, what with the Shadow suddenly popping out of nowhere, and just when a nearby bio-disaster reared its ugly head at the Agency and its affiliates. Regardless, they soon received orders from Sector Command to let the Shadow in.

//Shuttle, this is tower. You are cleared to land on dock number 501. An escort team will arrive there shortly.//

Inside the base, security scrambled to the station's upper levels as the welcoming committee formed around the dock. They got clearance from above, but that wasn't going to stop them from being crazy prepared for anything Kari' might pull out of his sleeves.

//Confirmed, tower, landing.// The Shadow leader said, setting the shuttle down as gently as he could on the docking platform. He opened the back hatch, and the power armour-housed blob stepped out of the shuttle to the awaiting escort team, who promptly escorted him to the meeting room. He sat down in one of the chairs. Across the room, he got engrossed looks.
"Ah, right. Let me begin." u'Sadow took a breath. "I've seen this substance before. It was the handiwork of the ancestor race of the Photos." A look of shock and confusion spread through the room. "Ah." He cackled. "You don't know the whole story, do you? Well, I'll explain out a little more. The Photos are not an original race. They were crafted from an ancient race. This race- well, I should back it up a little. Our empire was close to taking over the entire galaxy. There were but a handful of empires left that were not under our dominion. The leader of this were the Pok'thuj, who are the ancestors of the Photos. The Pok'thuj formed an alliance with the last remaining empires, and the forged a plan; apart from our empire, the Pok'thuj Empire was the superpower of the galaxy. Their weapons couldn't match ours, however, as they were a peaceful people, who had a strong belief in justice, liberty, the whole nine yards, we all know what I'm talking about. Anyway, they had the other empires protect them while the built a superweapon able to destroy us. This weapon, discovered by us shortly before our fall, was called the Splitter Cannon. It ripped a hole in between universes, and then somehow projected this hole, like a stabilized teleport field of some sort. They used this time to build their military as well. They fought us back to our home base, a massive space station. Just as we thought we were finished, they fired the Splitter Cannon, banishing the station and our remaining fleet to a parallel universe. Then, fearing corruption due to their new power, decided to leave the galaxy. However, they modified some of their DNA and seeded it. This modified DNA grew into the Photos creature we all know today. Now, you're all probably wondering, just what DOES this history lesson have to do with the new discovery? Well, this virus, codenamed KV-247, was the Pok'thuj back-up plan, in the event the Splitter Cannon failed to eliminate us. My guess is that there was an accident on the holding ship, and the temporal staisis unit holding the KV-247 samples failed, and the virus got loose. In all actuality, they probably would have done more damage to us unleashing KV-247." u'Sadow said. "Any questions?"

The Chivi officer was slightly put aback by the shadow's sudden barrage of exposition. Still, the Agency has had its fair share of outlandish encounters ever since its inception. Moving his chair closer to the table, he leaned forward as he extended towards Kari's direction.

"Are there more of these containers, out there, sir?", the captain quickly asked, not realizing that he had just used an honorific on a shadow, of all people. He had his reasons, however. It was only recently that a certain photos official got infected by a hallucinogenic strain and caused a giant fuss in USSS space. Who knew if the current cleaning program would be able to catch up with every single one of its carriers...

And now this happened. The Agency's hands were too tied up as it is to be able to launch a galaxy-wide treasure-hunting expedition. Dealing with the rising tensions between the Cabinet and the PSR was the Agency's current top priority.

"There were about 30 pods on that ship model, and there was only one ship designated to carry the virus. It could have launched the virus in excape pods. I'd reccomend sending in a team to check. I'd further reccomend the Photos. And, mind you this. The infection is a virus-machine fusion. It can be knocked out by E.M.P's and Ion weaponry. My reccomended strategy would be to hit the ship with an E.M.P, then rush the ship with boarders. The virus will reboot, but it will take about 15 minutes to reboot all those tiny little computers, cuz' there's several trillion of em on that ship, if not more. Also, this virus HATES, and I mean HATES, the cold. If you can find some way to ice the ship, metaphorically speaking, it will drastically affect the infection." Kari' said.

Back in the fray...

Major Taka was about to join in on the operation when she suddenly received a message. It was the Captain.

//To all units, this is Major Taka of GPA Regional Command! We've discovered something about this thing, you might want to hear about it...//

As she relayed Kari's exposition, the Coalition's units began to slightly fall back while calling in for additional reinforcements. Soon, a large package of cryo-weapons and EMP would rain down on the infected ships. Boarding teams soon went on standby, awaiting their signal.

As the infection spread, and more of the core ship became operational, things started to look grim. The ship revealed itself to be ancient, as Antimatter weapons, similar to those discovered by the Photos, were engaged. Luckily, the targeting system was not online, so they were firing blind. If it wasn't for the fact that those beams would destroy the ships in one shot, it would have been almost comical, seeing glowing bolts of golden energy spewing out in random directions. On this ship, the "hive mind", as it could be addressed, was planning. Always planning. Always evolving. That was it's job; to think, to plan, to direct. The whole galaxy would be purged of life, as was their purpose.

As wave upon wave of antimatter rained down on the ships a large portion of the less maneuverable units can be seen falling back or barreling out of the infected vessel's effective range, luckily to much effect. Still, one unfortunate Chivi battlesuit was caught by one of the beams, annihilating its occupant and several other proximal armors.

"What?! Everyone split up!", the Terasi's captain was rather shocked as he hurriedly ordered everyone to scramble their formations.

Several minutes passed as everyone tried to dodge the relentless hail of punishment. One by one, people got caught in the blast, Taka herself barely escaping death several times in a row.

Eventually, a sign of hope came into view as reinforcements finally entered the fray. Not wasting any time, the Choro Deidalus vessels which carried the cryogenics unleashed salvo upon salvo at the rampaging assailant. Hopefully, it would be enough to ice it long enough for landing teams to get inside the Ni'Calls vessels and extract any remaining survivors.

The instant the cryogenic weapons hit the ship, there was a conglomerate scream of pain. The infection was shut down. Everything on the ship stopped, while the cells encompassing the infection began to restart. It was like an electric shock from a tazer to them, except about 40 times the scale.

A Galdeen deep space exploration fleet moved through the silent darkness of the void. They have been ordered to attempt to make contact with the alien races listed by the Space Union ambassador: Minister WEI. A subspace data burst sent by Galieen had data recovered from the Union's data probe they gave them, the fleet used the data to greatly improve all of their systems. They now could go to Warp factor 7.4, they had a 36.4 light-year sensor range, and much more effective biosphere in the modified Mk 2 Type 3 heavy transport. They now had a expected 4 to 5 standard Galieen years before they had to return home for supplies, thats over twice as long their original expected time frame!

The deep space fleet is whats considered as a medium sized fleet. Five Mk 1 Type 3 destroyers, five Mk 1 Type 4 missile destroyers, three modified Mk 1 Type 5 colony ships that contain frozen alien flora and fauna samples, four Mk 1 Type 6 survey ships, each containing different types of research labs, five Mk 1 Type 7 cargo ships, containing supplies for the fleet with one containing military troops just in case, two Luur battle carriers, a combination of a carrier and small battleship, a single Mk 2 Type 1 battleship acting as the command ship for the fleet, and a single modified Mk 2 Type 3 heavy transport that grows the food for the fleet.

Admiral Tlekn onboard the battleship Pride of Galieen watched as the distorted stars passed by as the fleet traveled at warp factor 5. They had just finished scanning the wormhole they discovered a month earlier and had left a probe there to keep scanning it. His train of thoughts was interrupted when the subspace sensor operator called out to him.

"Admiral! I'm detecting weapons fire! Unknown signatures!"

"How far away?" Tlekn replied.

"Uhh... About six light-years away, sir."

"Helm, change course to the unknown signatures, maximum warp. Looks like we're about to meet our first aliens, people. Bring up red alert throughout the fleet. When we drop out,  have the non-combat ships drop out 7 light seconds away from the unknowns and leave three destroyers and a battle carrier to protect them."

"Yes sir, orders are being relayed to the fleet." Reported the comm officer.

Several minutes later, the fleet dropped out of warp, the combat ships a quarter of a light second away from the battle.

"Do we have a match in the Space Union data banks?" Asked the Admiral.

"We got matches, there are several groups of ships. One is commanded by a race called the Photos, one is the Ni'Calls, and the other is the GPA, a alliance of some sort. There is one ship the Union data banks can't identify, and its covered in whats looks to be a combination of nano tech and a virus. Never seen anything like before. All the other ships is attacking the unknown one."

"Alright, power up the rail guns and particle lance cannons. Shields to full. Comm, activate the Union's translator systems we installed, all frequencies. Lets see if can assist them and make some friends."

"Channel is open, sir." Reported the comm officer.

Admiral Tlekn nodded and looks back up to see tiny short lived flashes of light that indicated a space battle.

"This is Admiral Tlekn of the Galdeen Coalition. Do you require assistance?"

"NOW!", the Terasi's captain commanded. Seconds later, a cacophony of writhing metal echoed across the corridors in response to the massive swarm of machinery that dug into the infected vessel to release its deadly contents. Without a moment to lose, the officers aboard the shuttles charged through the hallways as they scrambled to get a hold of any surviving persons. The sound of grinding ice resonated throughout the distorted passages as rescue teams everywhere drilled through the tainted doorways to quickly reach the people sealed inside. As the clock slowly ticked down and the supply of cryogenics began to dwindle down, more and more survivors were rounded up and sent to the nearest transports. The rescuers honestly didn't know how long they could keep this all up. Still, they had a mission, and they were sure as hell going to do anything to pull through with it.

Meanwhile, back on the Terasi, an unexpected situation has arisen on the bridge's communications network. A seemingly unidentified entity has apparently been making contact with everyone in the vicinity, and in surprisingly perfect diction no less. Alerted of the new development, the captain momentarily left the handling of the operation to his subordinates in order to analyze the situation.

"Contact Sector Command.", the captain ordered, prompting everyone to follow. After some searching, the crew finally identified the new arrivals and proceeded in formulating their response.

//Attention Admiral Tlekn...//

The transmission reached the Galdeen fleet.

//... this is the MRS Terasi, lead craft of the emergency response task force sent by the Galactic Protection Agency.

Your assistance in this endeavor is greatly appreciated, Admiral.

A viral outbreak of some sort has infected several vessels, assimilating its components and using it against other craft in an attempt to spread itself. Unfortunately, there are still numerous personnel trapped inside the vessels. We are now in the process of extracting them, but it could take a while to reach some of the others.

We do not know exactly how long we can neutralize the pathogen with our current supply of weaponry. It seems to shut down when pitted against cryogenics, though we haven't completely assessed its adaptive capabilities yet, so the infection adapting to the weapon is still not completely out of the question.

Regardless, be advised that the virus has gotten a hold of very advanced weaponry, which have so far been capable of eliminating vessels in a single shot. Prioritize evasion if necessary.//

"Acknowledged, we'll keep our distance. We have a weapon that may be able to cripple or destroy the infected vessel. Sending data now." Tlekn nodded, and unseen, the Pride of Galieen's Type-2 AI sent technical and tactical data of a near-c Impactor-class missile to the Terasi.

Slowly, the Pride turned until it's broadside was facing the primary infected ship. The Galdeen fleet spread and positioned itself so when the Terasi was done with its rescue operation, they'll unleash all of their weaponry into it.

Several light-seconds away from the battle where the exploration fleet's non-combat ships are holding position, one of the missile destroyers jumped to about one light-minute away and turned to the direction where the battle was taking place. Under orders from the admiral, they loaded two Impactor missiles and warmed up their warp drive, ready to go the second the order was given.

As signs of regeneration finally became apparent, rescue teams were moments from shuttling everyone out of the doomed vessels. Small flashes of light dotted the crafts' outer shells as everyone finally withdrew from the extraction, just in time for the virus to reawaken itself. Having completed their mission, they hailed the main force to commence the attack, hopefully wiping out any trace of the threat.

As the rescuers watched the infected ships get engulfed in a maelstrom of concentrated fire, medical personnel quickly scanned the survivors for any trace of the infection, isolating and placing in temporary stasis anyone with as much as a sliver of the foreign substance. They will treat them later, but for now they had to get everyone out of the area as swiftly as they can.

"I trust you recovered a sample?", the Terasi's captain said to a group of scientists on board one of the escaping shuttles. There was an affirmative nod after they heard his question. "Good."

//Attention to all ships. This is the MRS Terasi, we have recovered the sample. Total purging of the infected vessels can commence as planned.//

The Galdeen ships opened fire the second the shuttles were safely away, railgun, particle beams, and nuclear missiles hammering the infected ship's defenses. Two antimatter beams managed to connect with a destroyer, it created a massive explosion, leaving nothing of the destroyer left.

With the signal received, the missile destroyer activated it's warp drive and sped toward the battle at nearly the speed of light. At thirty light-seconds away, the destroyer launched both it's armed Impactors, and using the targeting data being fed to it's on-board AI, targeted the infected ship. When they hit, thousands, if not tens of thousands of megatons of energy was released. Not only did they break the ship's back, the infected ship simply broke apart, being split in two.

The Galdeen fleet quickly took advantage of this and sent swarms of nuclear and fusion tipped missiles into both halves.

"No kill like overkill...", the Terasi's captain remarked somewhat humorously. Still, it was far better to lose entire stockpiles of munitions than to lose the ships themselves.

"All scouts perform a full spectrum scan on whatever might remain of those infected vessels.", he ordered his fleet.

//Copy that, this is the Terasi.//

In the background of the bridge, everyone was busy checking off the entire fleet's status. Some units reported massive losses, though most others were vastly better off. All in all, the damage dealt by the rampaging menace was surprisingly very tame, considering the weaponry weilded by the ancient transport.

//It's not much to offer, Admiral, but we could arrange for repair and refueling in a station not far from here.

Onboard the main Infected ship, the escape pods were filled with the infection and launched. There was a system nearby with several planets. The escape pods were aimed for that. On top of this, it aimed half a dozen at the Terasi.

"Sir!", one of the Terasi's hands spat as the sensors picked up the oncoming shuttles. "Enemy pods directed straight towards us!"

"Deploy countermeasures!", the captain swiftly responded. Within moments, the infected missiles spiraled wildly off of their course as the small vessels' engines were fried by an impressive array of lasers.

Except for one.

Aiming through the flanks, one of the weaponized canisters survived the wild barrage as if to taunt the Terasi's fate. But just as the vehicle was about to make impact, a small disturbance in space suddenly made itself apparent. From out of nowhere, a massive sphere of light engulfed the infected pod as the nearby Terasi suddenly lost its power.

"Status!", the captain scrambled through the darkness to figure out what happened. But just as the nearest officer promptly began to speak, the entire vessel's systems returned to their normal state.

Outside, the bright flash has all but completely vanished, while carrying the infected shuttle swiftly along with it.

//Captain! What's going on out there!//

Taka hailed the Terasi as she and her armor lowered the salvo of missiles that she was personally about to use against the swarm of infected targets.

//Captain!//

"We're fine, major!", the captain answered back. "I don't know how, but we're fine..."

The rest of the fleet followed suit with a massive flurry of activity as everyone checked their status before swiftly retaliating at the original infected ship.

What just happened?, the captain asked himself, deep in thought. However, before he could go any further,an incoming transmission quickly took his attention.

"Sir! A message from the sample collector!", one of his aides informed him, the aura of her voice bearing a very ominous sense. "The canister..."

"What about the canister?", the captain asked the officer, sensing the report's rather negative nature.

"Some of the contents have-", she continued before being cut off by the increasingly tense yet somewhat collected captain.

"Yes?", his word filled with expectations for the worse.

"Inexplicably vanished!

The remaining reduced to ninety-nine point ninety-seven percent of the original, sir..."

"WHAT?!"

"What in the hells happened?" The Admiral was flabbergasted about what just happened. "Someone, tell me where that pod went!"

"Sir, one moment it there, the second we picked up a large energy burst and it disappeared," A ensign reported.

"Admiral, I have spoken with the other AIs in the fleet. They are unsure on where the infected pod went to. It is unlikely it was a cloaking device," The Pride of Galieen's Type-2 AI reported.

Tlekn sighed, then turned to the comm. officer. "Patch a channel to the Terasi, lets see if they're alright."

The officer nodded, tapped a few buttons, then turned back to the Admiral. "Channel open, sir."

"Terasi, this is the Pride, are you alright?"

Back on the Terasi, the captain was still trying to wrap his mind around the series of happenings which, mere moments ago, suddenly transpired around him and his commanding vessel. Hearing of the Pride's transmission, he quickly picked himself up before facing the Admiral with a not-so-completely collected demeanor.

"Pride, this is the Terasi, we are alright. For the meantime.", the captain responded, forming his words as he went along, his mind still toxic from trying to sort out the nature of the recent events. "Scans seem to show no ill effects on the ship, or on any other vehicle within the vicinity.", he added shortly after as several video feeds in the back showed the other infected vessels in their very last moments, right before their swift destruction at the hands of the combined fleets. "With the destruction of the primary infected ship, the area will be completely free from the pathogen's threat."

"How are condition's on your side, Admiral?", the captain asked, a deeper meaning inherent in his voice. "That light just now... It seemed to have momentarily disabled the Terasi's systems, leaving all other vessels completely unaffected. If you would kindly confirm your condition, Admiral."

((Sure))

Tlekn turned to face the ensigns who was manning the engineering station, who shook their heads. He faced the comm. officer, who also shook his head.

"Aside from blinding us, all system are still fully operational."

"I see... Thank you, Admiral.", the captain replied before glancing at a nearby chart showing the results of the entire operation. A sense of relief came over him as he assessed the fleet's findings. Despite taking several casualties, the operation in general was a considerable success, managing to neutralize the local situation without much damage to the unit as a whole.

"We'll see you at the base, then.", the captain returned to Tlekn, saluting him as he sent the coordinates to a nearby relay station. "It was an honor having you here, Admiral. Over and out."

Four days later...

Galactic tensions were at an all-time high as news came out of the so-called Second Battle for Yalkna, between the Galactic Protection Agency and its ally the Makal Resistance, and the heavily dug-in Perrachi Socialist Republic. Both sides seemed to have no plans of relenting as the enmity between them quickly began to spill over into local space and beyond.

Still, despite the current conflicts, none of them were as particularly bothering to a certain group of scientists, as the enigmatic substance currently being held in the deepest laboratories of a certain Shudariadne.

They were now only beginning to understand the thousandfold secrets behind the strange new material recently brought in from Sector 21. For the past three days, the ORIST's share of Article #7418965-741895623-987456321-85279-852-987456321 has been in near-zero cryogenic stasis as R&D tried to find a way to keep it active for analysis without risking contamination of the entire research facility. Eventually, they settled with using their latest version of nanomechanical-atmospheric technology to culture samples of the subject for experimentation and subsequent obliteration without agitating the primary sample. This was to avoid any chance of the parent body, which is in constant stasis, from ever evolving through the experiences accumulated by its many daughter colonies. So far, such a system has proven quite successful as several experiments, and soon many more, have been conducted without any sign of dangerous pathogenic development.

Such activities shall, in the hearts of its many scholars and workers, remain the norm within the bowels of the great city, as it has always been for the past hundred or so years of its most fragile and volatile existence. One can only hope that it will be as so, as time trudges on and the risk of failure grows only as much as the penalty of unleashing it upon the multitude of nations above its muddled yet oddly glistening surface.

Far, far away, in a patch of space unfamiliar to such metropolii, a certain captain wonders, just like many others who have equally seen that day, if they have truly, finally seen the last known trace of the one they have come to call...

The Infection...

((So, I guess that's about it for Part 1.
