How would you manipulate objects without physically touching them?

Ask the Protoss, Terran Ghosts, Mass Effect Biotics, and Warhammer 40k psykers that.
In space, no one can hear you scream unless your transmitting it on the right radio frequency.

Isn't everything we're making here fictional?

Let me rephrase what I said. Its like asking how to make a real life anti-matter weapon that doesn't kill the user, let alone trying to produce the stuff. We don't know.

Yes, but we try to make stuff within the realm of possibility. Antimatter isn't magic, you know, just difficult to control.

And its also possible to have telepathic people. Just gotta re-wire the brain a little. Theres parts of the brain we have no idea about what they do.

We have a good idea of how the brain works, even if we didn't telekinessis would still be out of the question. Besides the obviouss, there isn't close to enough electrical energy in your body to manipulate objects.

Telepathy, minreading, empathtaps, and mind control are a yes. Telekinis is a no. Unless you want to explain it away as having an organic neual uplink to a gravity nulifying mineral.

Ok... I'll just stick with the telepaths.

I wanted to introduce them as members of a colony getting exposed to a radioactive crystals used in the construction of warp drives because of a cargo spill. Some of the exposed die and the rest are given medical treatment. Several years after the incident, their children start showing signs of telepathy, empathy, mind reading, you get the picture.

When you think about, telekinesis is actually pretty easy to do. You just need to have a pretty big neural organs, and a biological system that allows for high-levels of electromagentic output.

Essentially, it's not that hard for creatures like Wexxians and *Viri Voltei to do telekinetic feats.

*Not meant as a plug. I'm just too lazy to scour for other examples in the CC.

How would you manipulate objects without physically touching them?

Electromagnetism. Graviton manipulation. Spatial manipulation. :)

Maybe for the telekinesis, I could try something like the kinesis module from Dead Space.

Telepathy shouldn't be too much of a problem, so long as it is limited to reading members of the same race.  Such things do have a basis in reality, with hiveminds and whatnot.  Other races would just be too radically different for it to work though.

I'll just scrap the idea completely, let the purely psychic races have it.

If the race is artificial or bred (like CC slave races) an organic signal cracker/ wireless hacker method (with the Brains as the computers) is a plausible way of writing it in.
