Back in my Day...
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:34:20 am »
So, as you may or may not be aware, one of these days, we are going to be the older generation.  We will have young whippersnappers looking up to us and not getting off our lawn.  So what will our tales comprise of?  Thinking back now already I'm amazed at all the things that have changed in my 20 years.  So, I figure we should start planning ahead and start considering the topics of our crotchety old guy rants.  So post here about the things you remember that are not as they were, regailling in the good old days.

Examples for you!

Back in my day, Pluto was a planet and water was exclusive to Earth.

Back in my day, raptors were lizards, not chickens.

Back in my day, they still showed new episodes of Digimon, YouTube Poops were generally frowned upon, Weegee was still popular, and people played good games like Haven and Hearth.

Back in my day, CBBC was just a thing in the mornings and after-school, not a whole channel plus Cbeebies.

And there was a puppet aardvark named Otis.

Well I think you have all (well, not all.  Just Lush, rys and Octagonapus) well and properley missed the point to this exercise.  It's not about saying things from a future standpoint, it's about thinking about the world as it is now, and how much it has changed in our short lifetimes.

For instance, back in my day your computer yelled at you any time you wanted to get on the internet.

Back in my day you had to sit in the light to see your Game Boy screen!
Back in my day you had to plug a memory pack in your controller to save your game. (Okay, only a few games, but still. I'm looking at you, Rush 2049.)
Back in my day you had to carry around a CD-player if you wanted to listen to music on the go, oh and if you wanted a practical portable digital media you had to have a freakin floppy drive.
Back in my day only the cool kids had DVD players.

Side note: Can you believe there are people around now that can walk and talk and do arithmetic who weren't even alive on 9/11?

Back in my day, people didn't sacrifice good story and gameplay for graphics. They made good games like Age of Empires: The Age of Kings and Mega Man II. And there were no idiot "953 9WNZ UR &R@941(5" ("PS3 PWNZ UR GRAPHICS") trolls who don't know gameplay when it shoots them in the back of the head.

Lemme tell you, sonny boy, back in my day there was no such thing as a black President and when you talked about a Nintendo console with two screens people either didn't know what you were talking about or thought you meant the Game & Watch series!

Back in my day, the only 3D Pokemon games were on the N64!

Back in my day, the N64 was the hottest thing!

Back in my day, there were only 151 Pokemon!

Back in my day, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and the Legend of Zelda Oracle games were modern!

Back in my day, the Game Boy Color was so amazingly cool it blew your balls off!

Back in my day, Saturn had less than 60 known natural satellites!

Back in my day, Bill Clinton wasn't a universal punchline!

Back in my day, cell phones had antennae!

Back in my day, the U.S. government referred to the Taliban as freedom fighters!

Back in my day, there were a lot of globes with the Soviet Union on them!

Back in my day, Yugoslavia was divided by 0.2!

Back in my day, "dwarf planet" meant the comet the Smurfs crashed to earth in! Or maybe that was my own imagination...

Back in my day, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon had good shows!

Back in my day, Cartoon Network only showed cartoons!

Back in my day, I was younger!

Back in my day, Youtube, Facebook, and Wikipedia sounded like nicknames 3rd-graders gave each other!

Back in my day... Oh, forget it.
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

Back in my day, we had gadgets called "Cell Phones"... They were these devices that were about the size of your palm and could be used for entertainment and talking to people over long distances. Way bigger than the neural implants you fellers have today.

Back in my day, tanks managed about 15 MP/H. (Not related to lower two, I mean the things with cannons)
Back in my day, Bill was alive.
Back in my day, Zombie Apocalipsi only happened on Sundays.
Back in my day, People who listened to rap were laughed at.
Back in my day, marajuana was legal (seriously, it's not even as bad as alchahol! Or so I was told....)
Back in my day, people didn'y text in class
Back in my day, school was a plesant experience
Back in my day, People didn't "sag".
Back in my day, D&D was all the rave.
Back in my day, people were smarter than a 4-watt light bulb. (You have the smart people, though they're far flung and deep in hiding.)
Back in my day, birds weren't purple. (UFO, don't kill me!)
There's my 2 cents.

Back in my day, we didn't have your fancy remixes. We had to travel to Brooklyn, Paris and Kanazawa. Then we had to have each artist perform it for us live. In turn. Then we had to imagine what they sounded like together. Do you know how long that took? Months! We had sailboats back in my day! And rats! And scurvy! And by the time you were done, you were at least a year or two older!

Now you kids, with your internets and YouTubes, you just watch it whenever you want.
