A question about a game
« on: May 21, 2010, 04:08:51 pm »
I used to have a game called Mechwarrior 3. The disk got broken a long time ago, and I've wanted to get it again. Well, I don't have the money to re-buy it, so I wanted to ask: Is it legal to torrent it, due to the fact I already owned the game for the PC, and already paid for it? Because that would seem to fall under the catagory of making a back-up.

I think it would be ok if torrenting didn't also upload whatever you have to other people.

The whole "you can make a backup copy" thing is not true. You are not, under any circumstance, allowed to torrent a game file or any similar file unless you have the expressed permission of the distributor.

Torrenting games that aren't free is generally illegal due to the fact you're also uploading as you download. If anybody who isn't authorised to download the game (somebody who has not purchased it), then you are helping them acquire an illegal copy.

I only torrent public-domain freeware.
And THAT's when I'm desperate and my "Save Target As" takes too long.
Who are you again and why in the world would you expect anything resembling rationality or civility in youtube comments?

Hold on, hold on, I have a better idea!

You can get the sequel Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries for free officially.

Tah dah!
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

Making backups used to be allowed for a lot of EULA's, but The last EULA I have seen that allowed you to was way back in 1998, and I can no longer recall the game, but I know it was a Myst knock off.

Confoundit. If only I still had my reciept.......
EDIT: By the way, I already have the sequal, I have 4, and Black Knight/Mercs. I want 3 because it's got it's own benefits, the main being a decent mechlab, not this cockememe POS that 4 has.

I doubt there would be any problems if you did it, and i'm not sure how anyone could think you were wrong for getting a game you already purchased.

For further referance anyone else making posts advocating pirating as an option will be removed. We don't endorse that here. That also goes for schmirating yarring and yo-ho-hoing.
