'One Drawing A Day' Challenge #3 (ended)
« on: March 12, 2010, 02:49:21 am »
Welcome to the 3rd 'One Drawing A Day' Challenge.
Please take a minute to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and such.

OPTIONAL THEME
Challenge #3 includes a theme you may opt to follow, either occasionally or for the entire month.
There might be a badge in it for you either way.
This month's theme:

Robots are pretty sweet. They can be servants, weapons, or even best buddies.
Robots are composed of much more obvious parts. Metal plating, cables, rockets... room for all sorts of crazy details.
Consider looking up artwork from a video game or cartoon series, like Megaman or even The Jetsons.
Don't be discouraged from perusing a tutorial or two either! You won't get it all in the first try, but that's why you keep practicing, right?
Drawing and Painting Robots
Giant Robots
There are tons of different kinds, from clunky and stupid to extremely efficient and sleek. See what you can come up with.

BADGE EDIT:
Just one badge for this one, keeping it rather straightforward.

Metalhead Badge, for drawing this month's theme, robots. Kickass.

(FYI, you can tinypic these if you like, to make the url shorter -- http://i44.tinypic.com/dz9w8k.jpg

This challenge will run from Friday March 12th and conclude on Saturday April 10th. Another 30 days.
Challenge #4 will likely begin on April 14th.

For those in need an explanation, let's go over everything.

What we want out of you is just one drawing each day for one month.

Post whatever you can come up with. That's your doodles, paintings, sketches. Whether you're using a mouse in paint, a pen tablet with photoshop, or a pencil-paper-scanner scheme. It's all good.
This challenge is all about practice and experience. That's invaluable, and it goes a long way.
Experiment, challenge yourself to draw something out of your league, entertain the forum with your artistic wit.

We do impose just a few rules however.
(1)Your drawings have to have been created recently for the challenge itself. So no old stuff.
(2)This is all for fun and practice! So please put some level of honest effort into your work. Scribbly junk is kinda frowned upon.
(3)Keep an eye on your file size before you post. If you can't make it much smaller or lose some of the image quality, post a thumbnail and link somewhere offsite for the full image.

Other guidelines--
You may be allowed to catch up if you miss a day or two, but don't disappear for too long.
Please try not to fall too far behind if you plan on doing a catch-up. If you think you'll have problems keeping up, just try to give yourself five minutes out of the day to draw something, anything.
Try to join in by at least the first week; it'll help you get used to the idea of doing this every day, and it'll make the later challenges much easier.
Those that do join in a little late may post a few drawings at once to catch yourself up to everyone else, one for each day you missed.

Otherwise, don't fret too much about it.
Basically just draw something up every day and show it off in this thread!

In one month (or thirty days after the challenge begins), we will conclude. All those who have completed the challenge can opt to use a neat little badge they can show off in their signature.
They will be posted here after the challenge is over.

We aim to keep the challenges rolling. When this one ends, the next one starts up.

No sign-up necessary. Start whenever you're ready.
Hop to it!

Credits to Flisch for the idea, conferring with GD and myself to come up with a solid method of bringing it to you guys.
I'm just the topic creator guy.  :-*
Additional thanks to everyone who participated. Have fun, and good luck!

Can robots include hybrids like these or the Terran-Ixians?

I'm not very good with the mecha kind.

Yeah, any sort of robotic, cyborg, mechanical things. Even animate machines like Wall-E.
Suppose I should have included that in the first post anyway.

I'd say that's straying a lot from the robot theme.

It's optional anyway.

That's pretty cool, Put. But isn't it still only day 1? >.>

Alright, that's about enough. Hand is totally cramped.
I'm inefficient as hell.

Got some images of real mecha for the first couple of days...

Day 1

The UAV-57, aka "Raven", is a low-flying military purpose drone developed for certain high-speed clandestine operations which regular human operatives wouldn't be able to perform.

Capable of storing different kinds of weapon configurations on it's two generously-sized wing compartments, it can take on light to moderate targets without the need for additional fire support.

*Not actual stealth mode. True stealth mode renders photographing moot.

Additionally, it's ability to become practically invisible on almost the entire spectrum allows it to quickly fly past sensors with very minimal risk, which many officers find invaluable to the success of their operations. This relative invisibility is thanks to it's state-of-the-art meta-material coating which bends radiation through it's outer surface before allowing it to disperse on the opposite side, and with minimal undesirable distortion effects.

If, however, the drone is detected, it is more than capable of escaping using it's highly flexible, yet extremely powerful propulsion system which allows it to reach incredible speeds of up to one thousand two hundred kilometers per hour in less than two point five seconds.

Due it's success in the field, the government has increased production of these units, assigning them to some of the most elite clandestine forces stationed throughout the entire world.

An under the hood look at the unit's propulsion system. Blue signifies air intakes while red indicates thrusters.

Note the presence of two large thrusters on the dorsal side of the craft. These are used when the drone is flying upside down during situations which necessitates such a maneuver.

Day 2

The UAV-59, aka "Wasp", is considered in most circles as a smaller "helicraft" version of the UAV-57 Raven.

The unit is predominantly used by the lower strata of clandestine units operating under the government.

It is not as fast, stealthy, agile, or heavily armed as the former, but as one officer puts it: "It still gets the job done, and at a less costly manner at that."

However, even staunch defenders of the craft admit that the unit is an entirely different league below the UAV-57.

*Not actual stealth mode. True stealth mode renders photographing moot.
