Mornington Crescent - 9th ed.
« on: March 06, 2010, 07:06:44 am »
Was helping my grandmother clear out her attic and found a dusty old book of 9th ed MC and figured we should have a stab at it on the forums. The games we played a while back of the more recent edition were a rousing success so I think a good time should be had by all.

Just to clarify the rules, we'll be using the Banks Variant, which means you can only play a Crescent Gambit in the second round or earlier. Jubilee is wild and tramlink is permissible only in the case of a unilateral nid.

We will of course be using the Postwar Board.

Well, now that's sorted out I'll go first.

9th edition is pretty old. I don't know if many people will join such an old version of the game.

I'll try though, I can never decline a good game of Mornington Crescent :)

With the Banks variant, I think a good tactic would be to start at a corner. Therefore my starting move is:
Leytonstone

I think you mean Thames Ditton Didero, Leytonstone hasn't been a corner station since the expansion.

Well lets see, i think i'll take risk with Dagenham Dock and prepare a Filburt's Sweep for next round.

And actually Leytonstone was reinstated as a corner station in the 11th edition optional historicity appendix, but this is ninth edition.

Yo, I'm going to double blind and make a move towards my traditional power base. Elephant and Castle is mine and I hope you guys have all your ducks in a row.

Simple swaps have been disabled. Bahahahah! :D :D

I'll put High Barnett in my coffer and move to Baker Street

Now I can unleash the Watson Maneuver and take back Dagenham Dock from Munchkin.

I meant it more like near a corner, so I only have a few stations behind me. I didn't mean the official 'Corner move', because, like Munchkin5 pointed out, that wasn't added until the 11th ed.

I approach Snaresbrook, which I can do before my turn since it's only a minor move.

We seem to have more voters in the poll than there are players. If you are not playing please either join the game or refrain from voting. Thank you.

It seems my gambit didn't pay off, but nevermind, that sweep will come in handy, alowing me to move into Upney for double points.

Aww haha! You little bastard...

Take your double points. You can find me in Wembley Park. No modifiers - I'm doing this one clean.

Oh I remember this asinine thing.

Hey everybody! This game has no rules! They just make them up as they go along!
From the far future I fondly fracture the facade of your fanciful and fictitious frivolity. Five pfennigs for this furious and fabulous phantasm who faces not forward. Faith Forfend! Tis Future Feofafept... ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuu

I'm fairly sure your thinking of the yet to be released 15th edition, up until 14th there were/are plenty of rules.

More importantly, West Ham

Warren Street has fallen to my superior force. Double Twos for anyone that attempts to capture adjacent areas.

Also I move to have all incarnations of Neo banned from play unless, of course, he wishes to play.

Jump-back to Woodford, which also gives me a small stake in South Woodford.

You cheeky bastard... I didn't know we were sinking into the tomfoolery that was 4th Edition. Alright... alright...

I'll take Tegel. And yes, it's an exchange and I'm aware of that. I will accept the charges.

I call foul! Backtracking, trackbacking, and tackbracking are strictly forbidden from a 9th edition game as per the Cambridge Accord of 1904. The most recent edition of the Almanac states this very clearly:

Quote from: Stovold's Mornington Crescent Almanac (2001)
You cannot and shall not move in a backlike direction without first having proceeded in a frontlike direction UNLESS moving from a station beginning with a vowel or the letter Y.

While everyone is distracted, I'll take Schulzendorf bei Tegel, since you chumps clearly didn't think ahead. You know what this means? I can initiate a double-take maneuver and steal the adjacent stations as long as they're owned! Heiligensee and Tegel are mine.
No way dude, you're trolling me.

Um. No Always. Just no.

You haven't passed through any of the correct stations to make that move. Just jumping in you're in a very weak position to move anywhere except maybe Karl Marx Straße.

I never planned to keep them. I'll switch Heiligensee and Tegel out to purchase Friedrichstraße and set up a switching station there.

Take my station, Always. I'm moving to Wedding which allows me one step-up maneuver. I claim Euston, specifically Euston on the Northern Line.

I am but one move away from Mornington Crescent, gentlemen! ;)
